Carolyn Wilbur Treadway
Dear Classmates:
Greetings to all! I am sorry not to be joining you at Earlham for our
45th reunion. When our reunion starts I will have just returned from
a month long Intensive in Deep Ecology with Joanna Macy, which will
be held on the wild
and that I won't be ready to leave again immediately for another,
though much shorter, trip. So, I'll be with you all in spirit even if
not in body.
It's been a l-o-n-g time since we graduated! I got my
MSW from the
University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work in 1964, and other
certifications over the many years. I have worked professionally as
a social worker, family therapist, pastoral counselor, and now life
coach as well. I am semi-retired but still maintain twin private
practices, GraceFull Life Coaching and
Connections Counseling. (See
my coaching website, under construction: <www.GraceFullLife.com>.
Notice that I offer a free sample coaching session for you or anybody
you know, just by calling me at 309-451-4503!)
Since Earlham, I've lived in Philadelphia; New Haven; Ankara, Turkey;
Princeton Junction, New Jersey; and for the last thirty years in
Normal, Illinois. In 1967 I married Roy Treadway, EC
'60. We have
three wonderful and talented children: Nathan Stratton Treadway
(EC'92), Laura Treadway (EC'94), and Anna Treadway (Carleton '96) and
one lovely four year old grandchild, Oliver Stratton Treadway.
In our "retirement" years, Roy and I seem to be busier than ever. We
are both heavily involved in environmental concerns locally,
regionally, and nationally. I consider "speaking for the Earth"
to be my calling for my remaining active years. Stopping the spread
of nuclear power plants has been one of our particular recent
concerns. We have written an article, "Nuclear Energy and the Care of
the Earth," for Quaker Eco-Bulletin. You can learn more about the
dangers of nuclear power than you ever wanted to know by reading it
at <http://tinyurl.com/f5rq4>.
In January 2007 I was trained by Al
Gore to be one of his "1000 Messengers" to take his climate
crisis
message across the land at the grassroots level. (See the photo of me
with Al Gore.) Since then I've been busy giving climate
presentations, and hope to give many, many more. If a group you know
would like a (free) presentation, please contact me at
<Carolyn@PlanetCare.us>. If I can't do
it, I'll put you in touch
with others in your area who can.
We love being with family and dear friends; love walking, canoeing,
biking, and camping in nature; and we love cultures and travel. In
June 2007 we went on the Earlham Alumni trip to
had an amazing time. (See the photo of Roy and me on the ancient
Silk Road in the ruins of Ani,
trips with Earlham alumni!
I also love photography. In 1996 Golden Apple Press published a book
of my photographs--Insights: Sights and Insights, Mary Kay Himens,
author. I also have the cover photograph on the book Out of the
Silence: Quaker Perspectives on Pastoral Care and Counseling, Bill
Ratliff, editor, Pendle Hill, 2001, as well as a
chapter in that
book. I've written other professional book chapters in In
Her Own
Time: Women and Developmental Issues in Pastoral Care, Jeanne
Stevenson-Moessner, editor, Fortress, 2000, and in
When Children
Suffer: A Sourcebook for Ministry With Children in Crisis, Andrew D.
Lester, editor,
What question(s) am I living with right now? Questions similar to
what Al Gore asks at the end of the movie An Inconvenient Truth: What
ARE we thinking? Why AREN'T we waking up when we still (barely) have
a chance? How can, how will, we change the way we live (starting NOW)
so that future generations will still have the opportunity just to
live? How can I, individually, best use my abilities and resources to
help reverse global warming and to bring about The Great Turning (to
a life SUSTAINING society) which our nation and our world so
desperately needs?
I'd love to have our whole class dialogue about these questions. If
you talk about them, please let me know!
Blessings to all
