Retrogames rock! Vault of Darkness Part 1 of 5
American McGee's Alice

I've recently gotten into retro games; a year or two ago, maybe more, I got the EA GAMES Vault of Darkness, which contains five older horror-themed games which more or less run fine on modern computers. My favorite of the set (actually it's a tie with another which I'll talk about tomorrow) is American McGee's Alice. As you can guess, this game was designed by our favorite oddly-named game designer, American McGee, who is also producer of a more recent game, Scrapland, which I haven't tried yet.

The game basically takes place ten years after the events of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Apparently, a massive fire started by the jumping of her cat to avoid toppling books destroyed Alice's home and killed her parents. Naturally this put her in a catatonic state, during most of which she spends time trying to put her mind back together in a warped, twisted version of the playground of her imagination, Wonderland.

The Red Queen of Hearts has now come to symbolize all the negative emotions that Alice feels about the fire; she believes it was her fault that her parents died; she should've tried to save them, even when she was unconscious after being blown clear from the house into the snow.

But Alice is not alone in her struggle against the Red Queen; her old friends/acquaintances return no worse the wear for their struggles in the ten years since Alice has been trapped in her damaged psyche.

For more information on this classic, check out the following site and educate yourself about the fascinating man who inspired this chilling follow-up, Lewis Carroll.
