Hearts in Atlantis, by Stephen King, is a cool book. Sometimes sad and poignant, sometimes funny and whimsical; sometimes just strange, but mostly designed to make you think about deeper things. There's even an adjunct to Stephen's series The Dark Tower.
The movie, released in 2001 and starring Anthony Hopkins, is based on the first part of the book, removes almost all Dark Tower references and changes a large part near the end (the first part of the book is framed by pieces of the last, though heavily modified).
Check them both out if you have the time and inclination. Of course, the book is better than the movie, as all book-to-movie translations seem to be... except, of course, Peter Jackson's famous movie translations of Lord of the Rings.
