Hi, this is Jim Roach again. I used to play the guitar with Kelly Hoyer. Long time no talk! I wanted to let you know that we have a full band out of Santa Barbara now and the sound is much more rocking. We have a show Thursday January 17th in San Diego at Canes Bar and Grill in Mission Beach. I would love for you to come hear the new stuff. We play at 9pm sharp. Hope to see you there!
best,
jim

Tuesday, October 9, 2000 at 7:49 PST Hi-I Love your web site. I have a lot of the same cd's as you. I LOVE female vocalists. I noticed you don't have any Sade on your list. Do you not like her? Maybe you should try her new one, Lover's Rock.OUTSTANDING.
Much different than her previous albums, anyway if you want I could burn you a copy for free. Again I love your selection, I'm also a BIG Joni Mitchell Fan(My Favorite is Night Ride Home)If I told you all my other favorite female vocalists I would probably have the same list as you. Oh, since you are also a Natalie Merchant fan, you should try her cd Ophilia, I think it is her best. take care! Joseph

Sunday, September 9, 2000 at 17:56 PST Hi Joel.. Over the years as I've run into you at various peoples'shows as well as my own, you mentioned to me about your website and reviews you've written but being the computer illiterate person that I have been, I hadn't a clue. Anyway, now that the 21st century has insisted that I join in, I'm in the process of getting a website up with SDAM and I stumbled on your work and your site, I wanted to write you to say how much I appreciate what you're doing. I like your Twiggs site very much and I really enjoyed your reviews of Steve Poltz. Life's too short not to speak up when you get the chance. So, all the best to you Joel and I'm sure I'll be running into you soon. Isn't SD music just great? Randy

Thursday, June 14, 2000 at 16:38 PST Man, you really get some psychos on this guestbook, don't you?!!! I like your web site, and it's good to see so many women getting a
chance to shine musically. Did you get a chance to see Happy Rhodes in Santa Cruz? Are you going to review it? I'd be interested in reading it.
I was wondering if any of the local papers carried any reviews about her. I'd love to see her get more exposure, she's wonderful. I got a
chance to meet her in DC last year, and I thought she was very sweet and gracious considering it was midnight when I spoke to her and she
was obviously tired. I never get enough of her voice.

It has been a long time since we talked to you so I thought I would let you know what we have been doing. We both now live in Santa Barbara and are a four piece band called Five Star Day. We just finished our album up at Riviera Studios. The style we have pursued is pretty different from what you might remember. I have always been a fan of rockin' music and as you know she is the coffee shop song bird. About a year ago we decided to take a new direction and we met half way to create a GREAT sound. I would like to send you a copy and get your opinion and/or a testimonial letter if you really enjoyed it. These letters are always good to present to record labels. You can send your address to Rockerjwr@aol.com, and I will send you a copy. Thanks..and I hope all is well. sincerely jim roach

They have a HDCD, " I Am", that has a national distribution deal since last fall, they have been playing in Chicago, Madison and Minneapolis as well as Milwaukee. Their laed vocalist, Lora Nigro, is really interesting to see perform live. Thought you might feel like checking this out. I've attached text of their most recent bio and additional info can be found at their web site, Amazon.com and at CD NOW. (There is a fan review at Sometimes Y Amazon.com webpage.) The Sometimes Y official web site is located at: http://www.asky.com/ The Amazon.com Sometimes Y, I Am, web page is located at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00002060E/103-9703240-1525468 The CD NOW, Sometimes Y, I Am, web page is located at: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1096174561/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND /album.html/ArtistID=SOMETIMES+Y/itemid=800000 All the best, Art Greinke Greink@Juno.com _________________________ The progressive recording group Sometimes Y is at the forefront of an emerging spiritual interest within the popular culture. sY integrates music, fashion and design with a spiritual perspective that addresses a need to reconcile a diverse range of theological thought and scientific knowledge. The sY logo is visually and conceptually compelling. The multi-layered symbolism crosses gender, generational and religious boundaries, bridging Jewish and Christian Mysticism and Eastern ideology. sY is the culmination of a musical collaboration and marriage between singer/songwriter, Lora Nigro and guitarist, Kevin Roberts. Their breathtaking HDCD (High Definition Compact Disc) debut I AM blends orchestral and organic elements in an elaborate, artistic and spiritual expression. A four-star review by Robin Parish from About.com reveals: "Sometimes Y set out to create an album unlike anything you've ever heard before. An album that would be free of the rigid confines of any particular genre of music, an album that would be about sheer expression, free from any specific form. They've succeeded, based on I AM. The album is essentially poetry set to music, but the poetry is deep soulful stuff. I've never heard anything like this. The music refuses to be pinned down, using nearly every sound known to man. There's no denying the level of quality present in this artistic, soulful album. Sometimes Y is a group to keep your eye on... they seem to be the complete antithesis of the word 'pigeonhole'." The acoustic based arrangements evolved in the studio with the help of producer Vincent Gaudes. The tracks were edited and co-mixed by Peter Buffett of BisonHead, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gateway Studios, Portland, Maine. I AM was nationally released in a unique DBS (Disc Box Slider) package during the Fall of 1999 on Ruff Stuff Records, NYC and distributed by Big Daddy, NJ. I AM was independently financed and produced in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with the support of many recording and graphic arts professionals. The album has received national and local media coverage. In a representative review, John Noyd of Maximum Ink wrote: "I AM, is a pleasing mixture of engaging melodies and enchanting accompaniment, theatrical in its thunder and disarming in its fragile forms. The swooning lyrics of vocalist Lora Nigro weave words with an urgent, impassioned directness. Still, a shadowy visage mixes suspiciously with an air of grace and fair play. Exceptional production carries off both the grand epics of self-discovery as well as the swifter, more stinging flings with hard guitars and cathedral rock beats. Bewitching in their ease in moving from quiet spells of heartache to raging streams of vengeance, Sometimes Y is lighting the dark consciousness of fertile imaginations. I AM is therefore complex, conflicted, consumed and very much alive."

Sunday, May 7, 2000 at 9:21 PST Did you go to the dreadful John Prine / Iris Dement show on friday night? At least I thought it was dreadful. I'm seeking confirmation. Iris' guitar was out of tune, her timing was off, and she was so different than the other three times we've seen her- she used to be so upbeat, now very apathetic, maybe very tired. I just want another opinion.

Monday, February 28, 2000 at 23:47 PST Joel -- Hi! This is a rather odd M. I did a search on a great unknown artist I'd known many years ago - Teresa Gunn, once of DC, then Atlanta and/or Nashville -- wondering if she'd ever gotten out a CD. Which led to your page, and a mention of a Teresa Gunn CD. Can you tell me anything about her, or her songs, from the CD? The one I knew was a rocker and wrote great original songs. I'd love to get a tape of this, and I'd be glad to trade a tape, or pay a couple bucks for either a tape or that CD... assuming it's the Teresa I knew. I can be reached at Jungleddd@aol.com. Thanks for any info....

Saturday, August 1, 1998 at 18:58 PST As it so often happens, I was looking for something else and stumbled across your website. Specifically, the page you wrote on the behaviour of audiences today. I couldn't agree with you more on that issue. Unfortunately, I've grown up knowing little else. It still gets on my nerves, because when I go to a concert, I go to listen. I haven't had a chance to explore the rest of your pages yet, but I have an interest in the music and artists you listed and will be checking them out soon. It looks as if you have a very nice site here. :-)

Gosh, I wish I were in Hawaii - for no other reason, but that I would be able to get Paula Cole's album a day after it get's released, not a year. Could you do me a favour and send me her 'I dont want to wait' in MP3 form, so that I can listen to it offline, and not connecting to WB's site. Thanks Anand (I dont have a site right now, but am working on one)

Saturday, July 25, 1998 at 18:41 PST Hi! Just wanted to say thanks for such a well stocked website! It's not often I can find one that has Ani, Tori, Sarah M., Paula Cole and Tara M. all together. Great job! Oh, and to comment on the very first/top guestbook entry: I don't care what that guy thinks of Paula Cole, but women should be able to shave or not shave their armpits wether you men like it or not! It's NOT disgusting, it's completely natural and it shouldn't effect your opinion of a person. Anything men aren't expected to do women shouldn't be either!! Assuming, of course, that you use deoderant regardless!!!(wink)

Thursday, July 16, 1998 at 14:23 PST Sometimes, music can be like cooking. Like when you are trying to make that purfect bundt cake. You want it to be moist, but yet cut evenly and not be too flaky. You also don't want it to be too sweet. It must have good texture and rhythm. If you have icing, it should not dominate. It would be sweet, but it would be Barry Manilow. If you make a certain mix, it can be very dark. You don't want too much of a bitter edge. It should be attractive to the audience, but you must also realize that it is not for everybody.

Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at 3:47 PST WordZap - The Action Word Game! WordZap is a fast-paced, addictive game where you race the computer or a human opponent to create the most words from a grid of letters. When opponents make the same word, it is ZAPPED! from their lists. Obscure words are instantly defined to help with your vocabulary. There are four game options available, Wordzap, EasyZap, LongZap and MatchZap, increasing in challenge. You can play WordZap in English, French, German or Spanish. As you get better at WordZap, your computer opponent becomes more clever, matching your ability. This 32-bit version of WordZap can be played by two humans over a network or the Internet. If you like Boggle or Scrabble you will love WordZap!

Hi joel. I don't know if you remember me, but I am the guitarist/drummer for Kelly Hoyer. I was just looking at our review, which was a great one to say the least, and thought I would check in and say hi. I haven't played with Kelly in a while because I have been at school. However, I am home now and we have already played one show together at the Thomas Paine in Hillcrest. We have a couple more shows coming up and we would love to see you there. The next show is Wednesday June 17th. We have some new material, and we will be debuting our new piano songs. Thomas Paine has a baby grand, and Kelly will be playing and singing a couple songs, and I will be playing one where she sings and plays the guitar. Well, we are still in the process of finishing the CD. It should be done by the end of summer. We really appreciate the support that you have given us....it is real uplifting to hear that someone really thinks we have a chance. Hope to see you on the 17th jim ps We also have a show at Java Joes on Fathers Day. That one is still pending becuase Kel may have to work!

hi joel - sorry i haven't been in touch but i was either going to too many shows or working like crazy to finish my articles for the next issue. thanks for getting back to me som promptly. some other changes in the last few weeks - as you can tell i've gotten connected so that will make things easier. also apparently paula cole has gotten very popular and there are over 4,000 entries when i search for her with alta vista, when the last time i checked there were less than 100. word is out, eh? she is coming to town this thursday so that is very exciting. also as you must know she will be on letterman tuesday 2/27. (other letterman guests of interest - sarah mclachlan 2/24, ani difranco 3/27 - moving up from conan) the next issue of mixx should be out in a week and it contains my best of 97 list, with album reviews. that includes many of your faves, incl. sarah mclachlan, sara hickman, paula cole, shawn colvin, jill sobule, dar williams, ani, and the laura nyro tribute album, plus more, even one male - greg brown. send me your snail mail address and i'll be glad to send you a copy. also not sure of your email address. let me know if you hear of or know about west coast artists i may not be aware of. thanks - steve ps: i wish whoever grabbed "paulacole.com" would either do something with the site or relinquish the url to someone who will. nuff said.
