The
Mighty Lowrey LSC-1 Holiday

I
bought this monster at the Salvation Army for $30. It’s a 1962 Model that’s currently
semi-functional. Unlike the Hammond B-3
that uses tone wheels to create notes, this Organ uses tube oscillator
circuits.
I
recapped it with Sprague Atoms and replaced the carbon composition resistors in
the power supply with more reliable and accurate metal film units. I also installed a standby switch.
The
power supply is now working although the 7591 power tubes are weak. NOS 7591s are really expensive to and the
Russian replacements currently being made won’t fit in the amp. Apparently Electro-Harmonix is producing some
new ones so I’ll see if they work. If
not, I’ll rewire it to accept 6L6s.
This
model has a bank of chord buttons and one of them is triggering continuously
even though the contacts are all ok.
Must be a short somewhere farther down the line. As you can see, the wiring is a complete
rat’s nest. Everything’s hard wired – no
relays or ICs or anything. It amazes me
that someone actually built something like this in the first place.
Here’s
the rear of the organ with all the tubes lit up:

Here’s the inside of the lower chassis:
