~RICHARDSONs from Hounslow Heath~

The Mills of Surrey© 2007 by Edna Richardson Barney
Florence (Richardson) Heming wrote that her grandfather, John Mills, was a farmhand or hired hand. On Emily's marriage license her father's occupation was listed as horse-keeper. Florence wrote that her mother Emily had told her that the 10 children of John and Polly Mills were born two years apart from each other. She listed them, in order, as Emily the oldest, Harry, Rose, Herbert, Bertha, John, Agnes and Walter the youngest. The remaining two, Alfred and Allen, she did not place in birth order. Aunt Flo said that when the Richardsons returned to England from Australia and Africa in 1897 that Grandma Mills, who was an invalid, and Grandpa Mills, lived with them at Tilbury Road. She wrote that Polly Mills died at the age of 71 and that John Mills died in his nineties from a fall down a staircase which she believed occurred when he was visiting at a son's home.
The 1881 British Census records John and Mary A. Mills living with their married son John, at 45 Delmain Road, Lewisham, Kent. John Mills' occupation was listed as "carman". Also with them were their four younger sons and a visitor, Catherine Medham, age 23, who was born in Germany. From this census and my Aunt Flo's letters I have written this family history.
