How I got the 99'

     The 99' vette is the first new car I ever bought.  I was originally looking to buy a 68-72 vette' as I had a friend in college named Jason that had a 73' 4 speed coupe during his college years. I had many fond memories of good times with that car.  I began thinking about getting a corvette in 1996, and started my journey by begining to pay off all my other debts to make room for the car purchase.  To bide my time I would go look at different cars.  While visiting Jason, we decided it would be fun to see if we could find an old Stingray to test drive.  We didn't find one, but we did find an 89' 6 speed at one place.  The salesman was very nonchalant and pretty much tossed us the keys and said "Have fun!".  After that drive I was hooked on the throttle response of fuel injection and the handleing capabilities of the car.  I did some research and decided I would tryto get a used 92' vette since that was the first year of the 300HP LT-1 motor. Then the Fifth generation Corvettes (C5) came out in 1997! I really wanted one, but I didn't think I could afford a new car.  I was still saving up for a used 1992 when I got a promotion and I decided I would try to get a new one, and get the 92' if it didn't work out.   Well, after paying off all of the debts and saving up a huge down payment (to keep the monthly payents affordable), I was able to order this car on January 16, 1999.  The car arrived on May 18 and I picked it up on May 22.  I paid ahead on it as much as I could and was able to finish off the loan 16 months ahead of schedule.  Paying off all the previous debts and saving up the down payment was a very good experience as it forced me to obtain a level of discipline and self control that I did not have before.  It has made all my financial goals since then seem achiveable.

How I got the 86'


  I bought the 86' in May of 2004.  I was originally looking for an 89' 6 speed.  I came across this car at a local Chevy dealer.  The car had nice paint, but the interior was in need of some help.  It was an automatic, so I wasn't terribly interested.  I asked the salesman what they wanted for the car and he quoted me a price far higher than I thought it was worth.  I told him I thought the price was high and he responded "Well... were negotiable!".  I told him I would do some research and get back to him about it.  I did some checking on the value of the car and what it would cost to fix the things I found wrong with it (thank you CorvetteForum.com).  I didn't really want the car, but I felt certain that he wouldn't go the price I had in mind so I called him back a few days later and told him I could offer just over half of what they were asking.  "We've got more in it than that!" he responded.  "Yeah..I thought so.  Good luck with it." I told him and politely hung up.  Five minutes later my pager went off and it was the salesman asking me to call back.  
I called him and he said that he could sell it for $300 more than I was offering.  I thought about it and decided that the car and price was close enough (even with the  auto tranny, it was going to be a daily driver afterall).  The fact that my checkbook was loaded at the time didn't help to slow me down either.  I also learned how much bargaining power walking away can give you.  It has it's needs (as all 20 year old cars do), but I bought it partly to work on and learn more about Corvettes, so that wasn't an issue to me.
