Carolyn Wu and Katherine Young are semi-finalists in the Presidential Scholar Award Program. Approximately 20 students from each state are nominated based on their SAT scores and their academic achievement. From this group, six have been named semi-finalists. The winning young woman and man from each state will attend a week long program in Washington, DC and have the opportunity to meet the President, their congressmen, and other dignitaries.

FROM THE OFFICE OF SCHOOL TO CAREER
On Wednesday, March 28, Robert Corrente, the United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island, as well as an East Greenwich High School graduate
and current parent, spoke in the ninth grade law classes of Mrs. Mallozzi and Mr. Perrin. Mr. Corrente's presentation included a slideshow on gangs and gang violence. During the presentation, he discussed the ways in which
kids are initiated into gangs and the atrocities caused by gang members. It was an interesting and informative session.

On that same day. Mr. Robert Read, a retired investigator at crimes scenes, spoke in Mr. King's Forensic Science class. Mr. Read worked with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations, assisted the medical examiner with
autopsies, performed hospital autopsies and worked on the Station Nightclub fire. During his presentation, Mr. Read explained how autopsies were performed, described proper procedures for gathering evidence and shared
many stories of cases on which he worked. The students enjoyed the presentation and asked good, thoughtful questions.

As a follow up to the visit by Wendy Edwards, a wildlife biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Service, Mr. Wren's environmental science class completed the second component of a service learning project on April 11. He and the students worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to protect a nationally endangered species, the piping plover.

Piping plovers return in April to nest on many of Rhode Island's beaches, building shallow, inconspicuous nests in the beach dune. The adult birds, the eggs and the chicks are often preyed upon by predators including fox,
coyote, skunk, domestic dogs and birds. Nests are also in danger of being destroyed or breeding processes disrupted by unwitting beach users.

To minimize the threat from humans, East Greenwich High School students assisted the wildlife biologists in roping off a mile of beach, protecting nest sites, and erecting signs educating beach users of the dangers they pose to the birds

On Wednesday, May 2, Magistrate Angela Paulhus helped East Greenwich High School celebrate Law Day, by speaking in Mrs. Mallozzi, Mr. McPartlin, Mr. Perrin and Mr. Petrucci's freshmen law classes. She spoke about juvenile law and covered such topics as juvenile waivers, drug court and truancy court.

During the presentation, students acted out skits depicting crimes being committed. The classes then tried to decide which crime had been committed and the penalties that would be imposed for breaking the law. Additionally,
she explained the career path she took to become a magistrate, including her education and the numerous experiences she had while in the role of a prosecuting attorney.

East Greenwich EdNets Member Incentive Program May 1-31, 2007!

EdNets has extended to the East Greenwich PTG another Member Incentive Program. Find details attached. In short, for the month of May, each new Member that registers with EdNets to support the East Greenwich new Web Technology and Fundraising Initiative, EdNets will donate $5. If we reach the high target EdNets will double the dollar amount to $10 per member enrolled!
This opportunity ends May 31st!
Let's Talk Real Numbers:

EXAMPLE: Eldredge School:
300 Students Families/Parents
50 Staff
350 Total

If 525 people become EdNets Members X $10 = $3,500 to benefit the students of Cole Middle School.

Add just 1 friend, other spouse or family member to each above and the number could easily double to $7,000

Add just 1 additional friend or family member to each above and the number can easily reach $ 14,000…

Take five minutes to help us generate short term fundraising for your PTG, and long term fundraising that both supports our new Web Technology and Fundraising for East Greenwich schools. Go to www.egsd.net and register today! Thank you!

FOR PARENTS OF GRADUATING SENIORS: PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING MEMO WHICH WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO ALL SENIORS!!!!

Graduation & Senior Bulletin 2007
Many questions arise among seniors and their parents during the closing weeks of school. This bulletin is an attempt to provide the most complete information available. Please read each item with care:

1. As your four short years at East Greenwich High School come to an end, be on time for everything including homeroom, classes, exams, and MANDATORY REHEARSALS.
2. Seniors must take final exams --failure to take finals will result in failing grades. During the exam period seniors must attend all classes.
3. You will be issued a cap and gown during the exam week after all of financial obligations have been met. (Do not forget library books!!!). Be sure to try the cap and gown on immediately. You may keep your cap, tassel, and gown.
4. The cap is to be worn straight with the tassel on the left side. Near the end of the ceremony you will be instructed to change the position of the tassel.
5. It is not considered in good taste to wear any decoration on the cap or gown, including flowers, except for awards given by the school.
6. Clothing worn underneath the gown is up to the individual graduate and parents. However, what shows below the gown stands out clearly as you walk across the platform in front of over 1,000 guests! Dress shoes are appropriate. Shorts, T-shirts, work boots, sandals, sneakers, etc., are not appropriate.
7. The men will remove their caps during the musical selection and will replace their caps according to instructions given at the rehearsals.
8. On graduation day (Saturday, June 9th) it is essential that all graduates meet in the gym at 1:00 P.M. in order to line up for the processional.
9. Graduation exercises this year will be held outdoors on the softball field. This will allow you the opportunity to have an unlimited number of guests for this celebration. In the event, however, of inclement weather, the graduation will be held in the new gym of the high school. If there is any doubt as to the outdoor graduation, the decision will be made by 8:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 9, 2007. This will provide us with ample time to set up the new gym for graduation. Notification will be through:
A. Students will be notified at rehearsal
B. A message will be sent on the parent LIST SERVE.
10. If graduation is indoors, each graduate will receive five (5) tickets for reserved seats because we have a limited number of chairs and space available in the new gym. Small children without tickets should not occupy a seat. Persons without tickets will not be allowed inside.
When marching in, everyone in the class will remain standing until the musical selection has concluded. At that time, the entire class will be seated by the marshals.
11. Photographs may be taken but caution should be exercised not to obscure the view of others. Photographers will not be allowed to block aisles or the area in front of the podium.
12. The success of this graduation exercise will be assured by the complete cooperation of each student.

I look forward to a smooth and productive end to this school year.

Michael Levine
Principal

From the PTG Co-Presidents

Dear EGHS Families:
Prom is almost here and that always seems to signal the beginning of the end of the school year. This year's Junior/Senior Prom will be held on Friday, May 11 at the Newport Marriott. For information on many other upcoming events and dates, please take the time to read this entire newsletter. (You may want to print it out and keep for reference). It is a long newsletter this month, but contains a lot of valuable information and dates pertaining to our students, including Graduation, and Ivy Day.

The Mentoring program invites you to attend the Celebrity Chef's Night on Sunday, May 20 at Swift Gym. The PTG is donating a "Games Tower" to be auctioned off that night as part of their fund raiser. We'd like to thank all those who donated games to be included in our Gift Package. We are still accepting donations of games for this fundraiser. You can bring any game to the next PTG meeting or contact either Susan or Suzy if you can't attend the meeting.
With only two PTG meetings left this year, we are busy trying to fill positions for next year's PTG Board and Committee Chair. If you are looking for a way to get involved, this is an excellent opportunity to help out. There is a list included in this newsletter of open positions. Please contact Suzy Baird if you can help in any way next year.
Your PTG will be hosting the final teacher appreciation luncheon for all faculty and staff on May 9, which is during Teacher Appreciation Week. We want to thank all of you who have volunteered to provide baked goods and bottles of water for this luncheon.

At our April PTG meeting, we listened to presentations from Mr. Levine and Mr. Rath regarding the exciting new Digital Studio and Science/Technology Lab. Within this lab, there will be 3 new courses offered next year: Video Production, Desktop Music Publishing and Biotechnology. At our May meeting, we will be voting on a proposal to provide monetary assistance to be used for equipment for this new program.

Also at our May meeting, we will hear from Anne Palumbo, School Committee member and Chair of the EG Wellness Committee about the new Wellness Policy going into effect September 4, 2007 for all East Greenwich Schools. Please plan to attend our meeting to hear about this new policy. We will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15 in Room #230. We hope to see many of you at this meeting.
Enjoy your Spring!

A Timely Message From
Bob Houghtaling

Dear Parents,

Prom season is upon us. By now many young people have begun to get their ducks in a row in terms of; dates, limos, tuxes, dresses, flowers, pictures, etc. In addition, many have also begun making plans for after prom activities.

The Prom is an exciting event for not only the young people - but parents as well. It can be one of those moments that is long remembered for friends, fun and food. It can also be a time that produces great worry for parents and other caring adults. This worry comes from the fear that for some the prom is also about drinking alcohol, renting hotel rooms and driving under the influence.

In the vast majority of cases East Greenwich High School students have demonstrated exemplary Prom night behavior. Most parents who host after prom parties and sleepovers do so in a responsible fashion. Unfortunately there are those young people who view the Prom as an excuse to drink. And to make matters worse, there are adults who rent rooms and limos for kids so they can consume alcoholic beverages. Finally, there are also those who purchase the alcohol or collect the keys (so students can drink in a supervised fashion). Obviously, this is irresponsible. Obviously, this sends a mixed message. Obviously this is against the law and promotes the notion that it is OK for kids to drink.

So - be the parent who asks questions. Know your kids post-prom destination. Make sure you ask for at least on phone call - and most of all remember that your kids are kids. Enjoy the Prom; it's a fun and memorable event. Make it even more so by ensuring that its safe as well. We have wonderful young people here in East Greenwich. Your willingness to model appropriate behavior is crucial for their health and future success.

Bob Houghtaling

EGHS PTG Meeting Minutes
April 10, 2007

Co-Presidents Suzy Baird and Susan Garlock called the meeting to order at 9:50 a.m. Lynda Horenstein, from the Mentoring Program, was introduced and spoke about the Celebrity Chef's Night which is a fund raiser for the Mentoring Program. It will be held on May 20, 2007. The PTG is donating a gift basket of games for the silent auction.

Corresponding Secretary Report: Susan Garlock reported in Charlotte Evasick's absence. Resource teacher Kim Morgan has been ill and a card was sent to her on behalf of the PTG.

Principal Report: Principal Mike Levine spoke about the new Digital Studio & Technology Lab being introduced at the high school next year. They are looking for donations to support the implementation of this new program.

Mr. Levine also spoke about the Pre-Prom Program being planned for May 1. This year Bob Houghtaling has been working on a new program which will be presented to all prom-goers during the school day, emphasizing the positives of coming together as a community and looking out for one another, being there for your fellow students, etc. The PTG has committed to providing bagels and juice immediately after the presentation. There is also a plan to have a raffle drawing for students during this program.

Recording Secretary Report: The minutes from the March meeting were passed around. Co-President Suzy Baird asked for approval of the minutes. Sharon Kurose asked that an amendment to the March minutes be made as follows: "The CCC currently has a balance of $314.87. Lori would like to use approx. $200 to update books in the CCC. The remaining balance would be put towards the purchase of the college summary/comparison brochures. The CCC would need an additional $300 for the purchase of these brochures. The PTG voted to use excess funds from the PTG to cover this expense." The minutes were not approved, but will be carried over to the next meeting.

Treasurer Report: Sharon Kurose passed out a copy of the budget and reported a checking account balance of $7,360.43. She reported on payments that were made this month, and an additional donation was received this month.
CCC Report: Lori Elias reported that she has ordered the college planning brochures for an estimated cost of $352. These will be distributed to all Juniors this year. Lori is waiting to purchase additional books for the CCC, as she is expecting a donation of college guide books and wants to review those titles before making any purchases.

Request from Science Dept. Chair Nicholas Rath: Mr. Rath presented additional information on the new Digital Studio and Technology Lab. There will be 3 new courses offered next year: Video Production, Desktop Music Publishing and Biotechnology. All three classes will be housed in the new technology/science room. Mr. Rath presented a list of equipment that will need to be purchased to equip this new program. They are requesting a donation from the PTG, as well as from other organizations/founda-tions to support this exciting new program.

Request from Art Department: A teacher request has been received asking for funds from the PTG to help purchase frames to display the individual artwork of EGHS students in our school.

The Art and Technology requests were placed before the membership, there was general discussion, and a request was made for additional information concerning the Art Request. A request was also made for the Treasurer to present at the May meeting exactly how much the PTG will have in additional, non-earmarked funds by year's end. Both funding requests will be presented at the May PTG meeting for approval.

Co-Presidents Report: Suzy Baird announced she is looking for Board members for 2007-2008. Anyone interested in serving next year, should contact Suzy.
Susan Garlock reported that the PTG will be serving a luncheon on Wednesday, May 9, during Teacher Appreciation week, for all faculty and staff at EGHS. Susan also reported on the proposed new Wellness Policy for all East Greenwich schools. There will be a vote on this new policy on April 24, 2007. Wellness Committee Chair and School Committee member Anne Palumbo will be speaking at our May 15 PTG meeting to discuss the new policy and answer questions. It was also noted that additional funds will need to be allocated next year for Teacher Appreciation luncheons due to the new Wellness Policy and it's restrictions on baked goods being allowed into the school during the school day. It was reported that under the proposed Wellness Policy, which would be effective September 4, 2007, no home baked goods can be served or sold in school, including during exam week as has traditionally been done in the past. This would mean a loss in revenue to the PTG in the future.

Susan Garlock reported on the EGHS Junior/Senior Prom. It is to be held Friday, May 11 at the Newport Marriott from 6:00 to 11:00p.m. Tickets will be $155 per couple, which is $10 less than last year's price. In addition, there will be food and beverages served during the first hour of prom this year, before the dinner seating in the ballroom.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,
Susan Garlock
(For Geeta Chougule, Recording Secretary)

STUDENTS VISIT SPAIN IN APRIL

During the April vacation, 27 students accompanied by Mr. MacKenzie, Mrs. Pontarelli, Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Chavez visited Spain, sightseeing and interacting with the locals in Spanish. Sites visited include the Roman aqueduct and the fortress of Segovia, the Prado Museum, traveling via the metro and a bullfight in Madrid, the towns of Toledo and Zaragoza, the Sagrada Familia and the Paseo de Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Our students had the opportunity to visit a local school, practice their spoken Spanish and learn about the lives of their peers in Barcelona. Students saw places that they had learned about over the years in their Spanish classes and many look forward to a return visit during their college study abroad experience.

French Students Return
from Exchange

On April 21, a group of 45 EGHS French students returned to EGHS upon completion of the 2007 France Exchange Program. They departed from Boston, on April 5th, flying AirFrance to Paris and connecting directly to Nice. After touring Nice and the perfume capitol of Grasse, they were greeted by their host families, with whom they spent a five day home stay in Nice, and in villages along the Mediterranean. The group reassembled for the next phase of the trip, four days in Monaco. Tours there included the Jacques Cousteau Oceanographic Institute, the Exotic Gardens and Caves, Prince Rainier's Car Museum, and Monte Carlo.

The next flight took them from Nice to Paris, where they stayed for seven nights and eight days. On their first day in the City of Light, they enjoyed a motor coach tour of the city's important landmarks, before settling into the Paris Hotel Versailles. On Sunday, April 15, they spent the whole day visiting the Chateau of Versailles, the formal gardens, and the Trianon. They supplied and shared their own picnic lunches, purchased earlier at the Convention open market, sitting on the palace lawn by the Grand Canal. It was a very special time to be there, since all of the fountains were running in the royal gardens. Next they visited the artists' quarter of Montmartre and the Cathedral of Sacre Coeur. Other sites visited include Sainte Chapelle, the Conciergerie, the Pompidou Center, Pere LaChaise Cemetery, an evening illuminations boat ride on the Seine, the Impressionists' Musee d'Orsay, Napoleon's Tomb and the Invalides Museum, the Musee Rodin, a private guided tour of the Opera Garnier, the tunnels of the Catacombes, the Louvre Museum, and an ascent to the top of the magnificent Arche de la Defense. Dinners included the Moulin Rouge with its famous Cancan Revue, and a sunset farewell dinner on the Eiffel Tower, followed by an ascent to the top.

Although the travelers had packed in anticipation of varied weather conditions, they were pleasantly surprised by sixteen consecutive days of perfect weather, with full sunshine and temperatures in the 70's. The chaperones would like to thank the student participants and their families for their support of this important educational travel experience. This year's group was cooperative and well behaved throughout the trip, making it possible for the group to accomplish so much during their visit.

The EGHS France Exchange Program was started in 1982, by Mr. Gravelin. Since that date, a trip has been planned every other year, open to students currently in French II-V or to those who have completed at least two years of French. Since its inception, 450 EGHS students have participated. This year's group included students whose parents had traveled to France with Mr. Gravelin when they were EGHS students. The French teacher chaperones, Mrs. Varone and Miss Griggs, are also his former students. Other host communities in France have been Aurec-sur-Loire, Beauvais, Versailles, Cannes, Toulouse, Aubagne, and Nyon (French Switzerland). The next event is planned for the spring of 2009.

Current freshmen and sophomore students of French, who may wish to participate in the next exchange, should express their interest to Mrs. Varone or Miss Griggs. Planning for the next event will start in the fall of 2007. This year's group was limited to a maximum number of 45 students due to limited space; and unfortunately, some waitlisted students were unable to participate. We encourage students to enroll early.

If you have additional questions about the program, you may contact Mr. Gravelin, retired EGHS French teacher, at 884-8847. Once again, the chaperones convey their gratitude to this year's fine group of participants who continue to make our France program a successful educational experience!
