Enchanter's Burin

The Enchanter's Burin is the tool that allows Moon Mages to scribe, or 'draw', sigils.
Without the Enchanter's Burin, "Lunar Enchanting" would not be possible.

To many, the Enchanter's Burin is not considered a 'true' enchantment. However, do not let this consensus mislead you into believing that it is not important. Without an Enchanter's Burin, you CAN NOT craft an enchantment. This magical burin is created by what else, enchanting. That being the case, I personally consider the Enchanter's Burin an enchantment; one that does nothing on its own, but is essential none the less. (sort of like the Focus Moonbeam spell)

Items needed to construct an Enchanter's Burin:

The Enchanter's Burin is special in that it can be made two different ways, and from several different materials. I will list the items you need for both methods.

* 1 Knife (A carving knife is the best choice I assume)
* Knowledge of the Imbue spell --- OR --- A source for the Celestial sigil of Yavash (Scribing the material with a Yavash sigil acts like casting Imbue on it, although using Imbue will always make the default quality of the material start at mediocre. Scribing relies on your skills, and if they are low, you may see worse qualities)
* A material that will form the handle of the burin
(There are several choices here, but Oak limbs are the easiest to acquire)
* A gem that will form the tip of the burin
(Almost any gem will work. Nuggets and bars of metal will not)
* A spell that can activate sigils (Shadows, Dazzle or Unleash)
* A source for a sigil of a constellation that allows Magic predictions
(Like the Spider, Yavash, Coyote, etc...) (Note: It has been brought to my attention that not ALL Magic predicting constellations will work for this.)

Steps to creating:

I will use an Oak limb as the material in these steps, since it is the easiest material to acquire in game.

1. 'Spell up' with Seer's Sense, Clear Vision, Piercing Gaze and Aura Sight. This step is optional, but recommended.

2. Prepare your material (Oak limb) for carving into a burin handle:
--(Imbue Method)-- If you are using Imbue, you must cast Imbue on your Oak limb TWICE. You will most likely have to use more than the minimal amount of mana needed to prepare Imbue.
--(Scribing Method)-- If you do not know Imbue, or simply wish to try this method, you must STUDY either Yavash or a scroll with the sigil of Yavash on it until you memorize the sigil. Then, while holding an Enchanter's Burin in your right hand and the Oak limb in your left, SCRIBE MY LIMB. If the sigil doesn't melt into the limb, you must start over and re-memorize the sigil. If the sigil does melt in, then you are done with this step, you don't need to activate or bind the sigil.

3. Your Oak limb is now a 'magical item' and if you wish, you can check its magical craftsmanship level to see how you're doing so far. To do this, simply FOCUS MY LIMB.

4. Now you must carve the Oak limb into a 'handle'. To do this, hold your knife in your right hand, with the limb in your left, and CARVE MY LIMB. It will take you 4 times before you successfully make the limb into a handle, a 5th time will break the limb. (Note: Rangers get a rather large bonus to this step. SHOW them a completed burin to let them carve the handle.)

5. Place your gem on the handle to form the 'tip'. To do this, hold your burin handle in your right hand, with the gem in your left, and AFFIX MY HANDLE TO MY <GEM>. Larger gems are harder to affix than smaller ones. When you succeed, the description of the item will change from 'burin handle', to 'burin'. However, the burin isn't complete yet. (Note: Traders get a bonus to this step.)

6. STUDY a constellation that allows you to make Magic predictions, until you memorize the sigil. Though some of these might not work, I present you the constellations that allow Magic predictions: Yavash, Wren, Nightingale, Weasel, Coyote, Phoenix, Owl, Cow, Shrike, Spider. (Note: It has been brought to my attention that not ALL Magic predicting constellations will work for this.)

7. Holding the burin in your right hand, TRACE MY BURIN. The TRACE command is unique to burin construction and allows your finger to act like a burin. You could use a burin at this step to put the sigil on, but if you do, you will damage the burin you are making. SO USE TRACE. If the sigil doesn't melt in, go back to step 6.

8. Activate the sigil by casting either Shadows, Dazzle or Unleash on the burin. For burin construction, Unleash is VERY useful. It allows you to increase the magical craftsmanship level of the burin. This is good because the better the magical craftsmanship of your burin, the easier it will scribe sigils on other enchantments. If the sigil fades before you activate it, you must go back to step 6.

9. Bind the sigil to the burin. FOCUS MY BURIN two times, or until you succeed. If you fail to bind the sigil before it fades, you must go back to step 6.

Your Enchanter's Burin is now complete. You may FOCUS on your burin at anytime to see how many charges it has left, the sigil(s) used in it's construction, and it's magical craftsmanship level. It will look something like this:

You focus your magical senses on an oak burin inset with a medium rock crystal tip.
You recognize the delicate pattern of the Enchanter's Burin enchantment, which will
stay intact for a large number of uses.
The energy matrix appears to have been installed with good magical craftsmanship.
It appears that the matrix is based on a Foundation sigil of Yavash.
Roundtime: 12 seconds.

Miscellaneous information:

1. You may go back and make a conjunctive sigil on your burin to raise the magical craftsmanship level, but you will lose a lot of uses, due to the fact that you have to use a burin to do so. The TRACE command will only work to lay a foundation sigil on the burin.

2. Besides Oak limbs, you may use the following materials for the handle of the burin:
* Peccary tusk
* S'sugi Malchata rib
* Grave Worm carapace
* Angiswaerd tooth
* Troll leg bone

3. The quality of your enchanter's burin plays a very important role in how well you scribe sigils for your other enchantments.
There are many factors that may potentially affect the quality of the finished burin, besides your skills. (Skills being the most obvious and influential) Some of the factors that may or may not affect the finished burin are:
* Material used for handle
* Value of the material used for the handle (So in other words, Skinning ranks of the person who skins for the material)
* Value of gem used
* Size of gem used
* Whether or not you Clarify the gem used
* Level of the constellation you use for the final sigil after you affix the gem. (Example: Spider is 40th level)
* Type of gem used (Whether it should be transparent/translucent, vs. opaque)
