Sigil Scrolls

These special blank scrolls, either made or store bought, allow a Moon Mage to store sigils for later use.

The use of scrolls to store sigils is more than a luxury, it is occasionally a necessity. Some enchantments are made with sigils from celestial bodies that never appear in the sky at the same time. Besides this need, scrolls have several other advantages over studying the sigil directly from the celestial source, they are:

1. They can be used anytime day or night, inside or outside.
2. They do not have a timer on how often you can try and study them if you fail to memorize the sigil.
3. Providing the scroll is well made and of a good quality material, they are actually easier to learn a sigil from than the celestial source.

You may either buy a blank scroll at Xathvier's enchanting shop in Old Throne city, or make one yourself. You may even buy scrolls that other Moon Mages have made, that are better than what you can make yourself, at a cheaper price than what the shop sells them for. So ask around and see if your fellow Moon Mages are selling their scrolls.

The enchanting shop sells the following blank scrolls:

Material Description Price Ease of use Uses
Leather A truly durable material 11000 Hard 20
Onionskin For low usage projects 7000 Moderately 5
Vellum The workhorse of the modern enchanter 10200 Moderately to Fairly 8
Velvet For projects that require a master's touch 12000 Fairly 10
Papyrus A high quality but fragile material 9400 Very 1

*Note: Store bought scrolls come 'rolled up'. When rolled up a scroll takes up less space in a container. Make sure that you UNROLL your scroll before trying to SCRIBE it, or you will waste your memorized sigil.

Making your own blank scrolls:

If you decide for whatever reason that you wish to create your own blank scroll instead of buying it, you will need the following items:

*1 Enchanter's Burin (The better the magical craftsmanship of the burin, the better)
*1 Scale broken off of an Angiswaerd husk
OR 1 tanned hide (pelt or skin will NOT work)
*1 Knife
(any type of knife will work as far as I know)
*A source for the Celestial sigil of Xibar
**A source for the Celestial sigil of the Sun
(You only need this if you are using a tanned hide)

You have two main choices of materials when creating your scroll, Snakeskin or Hide, but there is also a third more exotic choice, and that is the wing from a Seordhevor Kartais. (The wing doesn't need to be tanned, but does require the sun sigil placed on it to dry it out)

Snakeskin scrolls are made from the scales of an angiswaerd. In order to get an angiswaerd scale you have to remove the scale from the husks that they leave behind when they die. (*Note: the husks automatically appear when the angiswaerd decays, you do not have to skin the angiswaerd to get a husk. Skinning an angiswaerd is quite difficult, and will give you an 'angiswaerd tooth'.) While holding the husk in your right hand, BREAK MY HUSK. You will attempt to break off a scale. If you fail, simply try again. Sometimes you will manage to break off a scale but it will be 'cracked'. If this happens just throw it away, it is useless for our purposes. Adult angiswaerd husks should yield between 3-4 total scales (broken and non), and hatchling husks between 1-2 scales.

Hide scrolls are made from the tanned hides of assorted creatures. Pelts and skins will not work, it has to be a 'hide'. Skinning plays a large roll here, most likely setting a maximum level of quality you can achieve in the final product of the scroll. Unless you have a lot of Skinning ranks, or are planning on getting someone else who does to do it for you, I would stick with the angiswaerd scale. Player made scrolls are fairly difficult to read from as is, having a penalty from your skinning job on top of that is shooting yourself in the foot.

Steps to creating:

1. 'Spell up' with Seer's Sense, Clear Vision, Piercing Gaze and Aura Sight. This step is optional of course.

2. (*Note: Steps 2 and 3 are for tanned hides and kartais wings, if you are using an angiswaerd scale, skip ahead to step 4)
STUDY
the Sun, or a scroll with a Sun sigil on it, until you memorize the sigil. If you fail when studying the Sun, wait 3 minutes and try again. Studying the Sun is easiest at dusk and dawn. Remember, scrolls are more forgiving and you may repeatedly try until you get it.

3. Holding your Enchanter's Burin in your right hand, and your TANNED hide in your left, SCRIBE MY HIDE. If the sigil doesn't melt into the hide, you must go back to step 2. If you are successful, you should hear your hide 'his and pop as it dries out completely'. (you can also use a katais wing here)

4. STUDY Xibar, or a scroll with a Xibar sigil on it, until you memorize the sigil. If you fail when studying Xibar, wait 3 minutes and try again. Scrolls are more forgiving and you may repeatedly try until you get it.

5. Holding your Enchanter's Burin in your right hand, and your angieswaerd scale or tanned hide in your left, SCRIBE MY SCALE or SCRIBE MY HIDE. If the sigil doesn't melt into the hide or scale, you must go back to step 4.

6. There is no need to activate or bind the Xibar sigil, it merely makes the hide or scale into a magical item capable of being cut and shaped into a blank scroll.

7. Still holding the scale or hide in your left hand, and while holding your knife in your right, CUT MY SCALE or CUT MY HIDE. You must do this 4 times. Basically you are shaping the material into a 'scroll shape'.

8. Again holding your hide or scale in your left hand, with your knife in your right hand, CLEAN MY SCALE or CLEAN MY HIDE. You must do this 4 times. On the fourth time you will notice that the scale or hide has turned into a scroll of the appropriate type. Instead of a knire, you may use a hide scraper on this step if you wish. I don't think it affects the quality of the scroll either way. (*Note: At any point between steps 6 and the 4th clean of step 8, you can FOCUS MY SCALE or FOCUS MY HIDE and see the magical craftsmanship level. This will give you a good idea of how easily you will be able to scribe to, or read a sigil from the finished scroll.)

Using a scroll:

To store a sigil on a scroll is a simple matter, simply STUDY a celestial body and then SCRIBE MY SCROLL. The scroll must be in your left hand, with your Enchanter's Burin in your right. If the sigil doesn't melt into the scroll and is whisked away, you must try again. ALL player made scrolls have 2 uses, regardless of the material they are made from, or the skill of the Moon Mage who made it. (*Note: If you scribe a blank scroll with a sigil you memorized from another scroll, the scroll will only have 1 use!)

To memorize a sigil off of a scroll, you have to STUDY MY SCROLL. However, it should be mentioned that you will have to first READ MY SCROLL. Otherwise this will happen: You quickly realize that you have no chance of memorizing the sigil without an accurate reading of it first. For the best chance of a successful STUDY, READ your scroll until you see the name of the sigil, the quality with which it is inscribed, and the number of uses left on the scroll.
