emblems@iname.comThe Wichita Police Department patch has not been changed since its inception probably in the early 50's, It appears to be based on a City Seal from that era. Kansas is known as "The Wheat State" and "The Sunflower State." The sunflower appears in the center of the patch with the initials C of W, for City of Wichita in the center of the flower. The base design of the patch is the shape of a Wheat Sheaf. The Wichita Police uniform is a khaki color shirt, with tan/beige pants which have a one inch green stripe on the legs. Jackets are green and vary from light weight nylon to a GORE-TEX parka.
Issue weapons in the 70's & 80's were S&W .38 mod 10, and 64 revolvers, in the early 90's the S&W 5906 9mm pistols were issued. The H&K USP .40 pistol, double action only, was issued for under two years, ending in 1997. There were a number of malfunctions with that weapon, and all officers who were issued the H&K are in process of recieving the Glock 22. Officers who have personally owned weapons which meet the departments specifications, SIG, GLOCK, or BERETTA .40 and double action only registered by December 31st 1997 may carry them. After December 31st, 1997 ONLY the Glock 22, 23, & 27 .40 caliber "safe action" pistols may be added, or issued (I carry a Sig 229). Batons were straight 24" ebonite, then PR-24s. Most officers now carry the ASP expandable baton.

The current Wichita Police car is a Chevrolet Impala, but we are going back to Crown Victorias in 2006. They are alll white with a blue reflective stripe, and full red & blue light bar. No unmarked cars are used for patrol or traffic in Wichita. Detective cars are Corsica's or Tempos, mostly blue. We are advancing to Ford Taurus vehicles in 2006. Chevrolet Lumina's are used for Supervisors, and Community Policing Officers, but are being replaced with Impalas and Crown Vics.
