Here are shots of a Hardinge Horizontal Mill, model UM (Universal swivel table) I tore down repaired and refinished. Mechanically the machine was good before the work was done.
Before Shot
This started the majority of the work after the machine was disassembled.
Lots of the original filler had been falling off. I tried to check
every square inch of
the casting and to knock off the loose filler and clean the metal beneath
in preparation
for the new filler. I choose NOT to remove all the filler. It was labor
intensive as it was. To have
removed all the filler and started from scratch on all the tight small
lines and curves
would have been too much.
Shot of the primered machine. I used primer surfacer. Its easily sandable
and
fills small imperfections. Sorry, I didn't take pictures during the
filling process. :-(
Side note, the base of the machine also underwent a similar process.
I had the sheet steel base sand blased and the cast iron top as well.
The cast iron
base top was also coated with filler. I had to completely fill it.
THAT was a job!
