I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a very festive and happy New Years and that your new year is off to a great start. I want to personally thank John Faris and Gary Combs for all the hard work they put into the New Years Eve Party. I think everyone who attended will agree it was the best New Years Eve Bash we have ever had and it was a great way to usher in the New Year.
Some of us had a great time participating in the local lighted boat parades (even though my bank account is some what smaller after repairing two broken sheer couplings in my out drives). The Yacht Club was well represented and we took home some of the top prizes. The Faris’ were named best in show at the Ft. Walton Beach parade. The Graves were named best in show at the Sandestin parade and the Faris’ won the prize for the brightest. The Fairs’ were also named best in show at the Destin and Ft Walton Beach Yacht Club parades. Dave Vachon was also a prize winner at the Ft Walton Beach Yacht Club parade. There has been some interest in the club for sponsoring a lighted boat parade of our own next year. If you have any ideas or think it is something worth doing, please talk to me or one of the board members. If there is enough interest, we will take it on as a project.
For those of you who might not have seen the e-mail, at the last board meeting we decided to see if there was enough interest to build a Float to participate in this years Billy Bowlegs parade. Pete McNally has acquired a 30ft trailer that can be used for building the float. If we get enough interest, we will proceed with the project. If you are interested in helping build the float and participating in the Bowlegs parade, please contact Pete McNally. His e-mail address is eodfamily1@cox.net or you can reach him by phone at 651-2891.
Pat Seip is busy putting together a great cruise schedule for next year. If you have any ideas, please get in contact with her. We are always open to new and different ideas for cruises. The dive flight already has a very exciting schedule of dives for the upcoming year, but if there is a dive you think everyone would enjoy that is not on the schedule; please let one of the board members know.
I am looking forward to a very exciting boating and diving year and look forward to seeing you on the water.

THE
GRAPEVINE By Joan Faris |
|
I’m saddened to report that since our Sea Notes were last published Dick Sigman passed away. Dick was a long time member of our club and even in failing health a strong volunteer. He and Betty are in our thoughts and prayers.
On a happier note, our members were busy during the holiday season. Bob and Karen Gramm traveled to south Florida to spend the Christmas with their daughter Micki and Miller’s took a quick trip to Hawaii for a short cruise to warm up for the holidays. Our club was well represented in all four local lighted boat parades and took prizes in all of them. Notably, our Commodore, Tom Graves and family, took home the best overall boat at Sandestin. We had five EYC boats participating and took home three of their top four prizes. We also took first place in the Fort Walton Beach Main Street, Destin Harbor, and Fort Walton Beach Yacht Club parades. Thanks to all who took the time to decorate the boat and our club. Our dock and club really looked spectacular for our Christmas and New Year’s Parties. On a personal note, special thanks to the Christmas carolers who crewed Hallie for the four parades and our coral director and sound technician, Karen and Robbie Roberts. We could not have done it without you!
We rang in the New Year in style with another super New Year’s Eve party sponsored by Gary Combs and John Faris. Tom Graves and Barry Bradshaw provided key support with food preparation and Nancy Combs did a spectacular job setting the tables. We had eighty people signed up and there was all the food, drink, and music anyone could ask for. The party really got going around midnight and lasted until the small hours of the morning. It was said that even exotic dancers appeared around 2:30 AM but I will neither confirm nor deny that rumor. The event was topped off the following morning when about thirty of us gathered for a wonderful brunch. I look forward to next year.
With the new year we start our annual quest for volunteers to host our Family and Membership Nights. Please show your support for our club by signing up to host or work on a crew for at least one of these nights this year. If you can’t remember the last time you worked one of our events, then you are overdo. It really isn’t hard and can be a lot of fun.
Remember, when you hear about any of our members who need a little cheer or deserve recognition PLEASE call or e-mail me and I will take it from there. Contact me by phone at 678-5834 or e-mail joanfaris@aol.com.
See you at the club.

BILLY BOWLEGS!
The
Eglin Yacht club is trying to put together a float for the Billy Bow legs
parade. We are looking for people to give their time to build and ride on
such float. There will be plenty of room on the float. The float is 30 feet
long. We will be building from bottom to top. We have some good ideas, but,
could always use more. I need to have enough people to start building the
float and to ride on the float. Anyone building the float will have first
rights to ride the float during the parade. If we can not get enough people,
the float idea will be brushed aside. Thank you everyone for your time and
help.

It was a big disappointment when we had to cancel our last cruise. The winds were too strong, the water too low and little participation. We hope the next cruise will turn out better. It will be February 18-20 at Marker 51. This is President's Weekend. I hope we have good participation and good fun. If you can attend please call me at 243-5860 or e-mail me at patrays@aol.com.
Hope to see you on the water next month.
See you on the water soon!
Dive Activities News
By Keith Dodson A new and exciting year
has started and we all should be preparing for some great dives! It is time to
start thinking about what you would like to do with your own personal growth in
this great sport! Maybe you want to take that next level of training, go on
that unforgettable trip to some exotic dive location or simply to just get out
and dive more this year. One way you can possible
make this happen is to become more active with a great group of people, the
Eglin Dive Flight. We have the resources available to help you reach your
diving education goal with our dive flight manager and PADI Master Instructor
Robert Hyde. This includes beginner lessons for those who have always wanted to
take up diving. We have some awesome trips planned for this season here local
and beyond to different areas! We also have some Friday night club
meetings/barbeques planned. Take a look at the club’s calendar which is posted
onto the Eglin Yacht Club’s web page at
http://members.cox.net/eyc/. It is a really great web site with lots of
great information and pictures of events held. Did you know that the
Eglin Dive Flight has the folks trained to perform those yearly visual
inspections (VIPS) on your tanks that are required? There are several renters
who can perform this inspection for you at a small cost of $5.00! This is
approximately half the price of getting this done down town! Along with being
able to perform VIPS at the club, we have some really great prices on rental
gear. We have tanks, BC’s, Regulator sets, dive flag’s, weights and weight
belts, all at really great prices! Stop by and check out or prices. You’ll
find that we are the best around town! The club is currently is
working it’s winter hours for renting of equipment, which is every Friday night
opening at 5:30 and closing at 7:30. This is a great deal as well on the rental
of equipment! If you rent something on a Friday night, it is not due back till
the following Friday night! That means you get the rental gear for a full week
at one low price. If any of this sounds
interesting to you, stop by the club on a Friday night and visit us. You may
just find an exciting group of folks to join up with and experience the
wonderful world of Diving! ** Watch for updated
Dive Club information on our website and through your email.
