 From the Bridge

It is hard to believe another year is about to draw to a close.  My, how time flies when you are having fun.  Your new board and bridge had a busy October and November.  Our committees are up and running and we are ready to start looking at the club improvement plan for the coming year.  There are a number of improvements we need to make in the coming year, so get ready for a couple of work days.  I want to give a big thanks to everyone who turned up for the Dive Flight work day on 18 November.  We were able to paint the entire dive flight and rearrange some things.  The place looks a lot better now.

The board is in the process of putting together the calendar for next year.  If you have any ideas for activities for the coming year, please let me or one of the board members know and we will get them on the calendar.  We would also like to revitalize one of our old traditional activities; Friday game night.  We will put them on the calendar for the second Friday of the month and see if there is enough interest to continue.

I am looking for inputs on the Saturday night Family night.  Do we need to keep it on Saturday or move it back to Friday?  Let me or one of your board members know what you think.  Also, this is another reminder that there is NO FAMILY NIGHT IN DECEMBER due to the clubs participation in the boat parades.  If you are not participating in the parade, I encourage you to come and watch.  The Ft Walton parade can be viewed from the Ft Walton Landing on 2 December, and the Baytown Parade can be seen from the Baytown Marina dock on 9 December.

Pat Seip is putting lots of effort in developing a cruise/activities schedule for this year.  She has several great ideas, but always welcomes everyone’s inputs.  So, if you have an idea for a cruise or activity, please let her know.  Pat is working hard to make our activities open to as many members as possible so watch for announcements and be ready to join in the fellowship and fun.

Gary Combs, John Faris and I are working hard to put together a great New Years Eve celebration for you.  If you haven’t already made reservations, please give Gary Combs a call as soon as possible.  The cut off date for reservations is approaching rapidly.

Beginning in January, Christi O’Leary is taking over reservations from Linda Gail Martin.   The process will stay the same as it has always been except we are adding an email address for the convenience of our members.  So, instead of calling, you can just send an email to make or cancel a reservation.  The members that are on the permanent list will still be on that list.  The email is eycreservations@valp.net and the new phone number is 240-4448.

I thank you for your continued support and inputs. Please feel free to call or email me at any time.     I look forward to seeing everyone at out Christmas Party on 15 December.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year!

Tom Graves

THE GRAPEVINE

By Joan Faris

We continue to do pretty well when it comes to illnesses.  Hazel Schaible is finally making good progress recovering from chemotherapy and Barbra Harrington is feeling much better after a bout with shingles.  I’ve only had to send out a couple of other get well cards, so all-in-all we have a lot to be thankful for.

In our members on the move category:  Bob and Karen Gramm spent a week at Coco Beach wind surfing and had a great time.  Troy and Kay Dent have really been on the go!  First they flew to Las Vegas to attend a squadron reunion, then spent a few days home and drove to New Smyrna Beach for a week with family and friend at one of their time-shares.

Don’t forget our next Family Night SATURDAY 2 DECEMBER is cancelled!!! However, Several of our members will be participating in the Fort Walton Beach Main Street Light Boat Parade that night at Fort Walton Beach Landing.  So come down to the Landing to watch the parade at 6 PM then meet us at Sun Rise Marina on the Sound afterwards for some Christmas cheer.  January Family night will be as scheduled (Saturday 6 January 2007) - hope to see you at both events.

Remember, when you hear about any of our members who need a little cheer or deserve recognition PLEASE call or e-mail me and I will take it from there.  Contact me by phone at 678-5834 or e-mail joanfaris@aol.com.

See you at the club.

Boating Activities
by Pat Siep

The holiday season is just around the corner.  There will be no planned cruises for December.  There will be Christmas boat parades.  I know the first one is on Dec. 2nd at FWB.  Let John Faris know if you are interested.  As winner last year he knows all about the Christmas parades.

Our dinner cruise turned out very nice.   We had happy hour on the Faris’s boat.  We thank them for letting some of us go with them on their boat.   There were 21 people who ate at the Crab Shack.  The owner serenaded Hazel Schaible during dinner with his accordion and voice.  The food was very good and large proportions.  We were all glad to see Hazel out for the first time.

January we will probably try another dinner cruise.  We will let you know about that later on.

Happy cruising!

See you on the water soon!

Fish ID Books: If you’re looking for fish and critter ID books, Undercurrent has them all, covering the waters from Micronesia to Baja Mexico, from the Caribbean to Indonesia. Go to http://www.undercurrent.org/UCnow/bookpicks.shtml to order. Remember, all profits from Undercurrent book sales go directly to protect coral reefs.

Trip Insurance Problems: Have you had problems with trip insurance, presuming that you were covered for a mishap, delay or cancellation, only to have the insurance carrier refuse to reimburse you. We’re preparing a story about scuba travel and trip insurance to help our readers decide when to get coverage and with what company. Please let me know about your experiences, good or bad, with travel insurance policies. Email editor@undercurrent.org.

Stingray City: Since Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin died of a sting ray barb to his chest, operators taking tourists to Grand Cayman’s Stingray City have reported a 40 percent drop in business. Now, rays are even more in the news. In early October, an eagle ray jumped into a boat of an 82-year-old Florida retiree and when he tried to throw it back the barb pierced his chest. The Cayman government expects to toughen its regulations on Stingray City boat operators and has issued cautions about feeding moray eels. Yet, Cayman Net News reports that many operators have ignored those rules. On October 11 a dive guide named Chester from Captain Marvin’s was seriously injured when a large green moray attacked him while he was playing snake charmer for two young girl tourists.

Dehydration and Diving-Does It Really Increase the Risk for DCS?  Dehydration is often listed as one of the main factors that are thought to increase the risk of decompression illness, it having been suggested that hydration may enhance inert gas removal or increase surface tension of the blood. There is usually a caveat stating that this has not been studied. Now, in the Journal "Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine", Fahlman and Dromsky at the Naval Medical Research Center have studied pigs and have shown that yes, there is an increased risk for DCS due to dehydration.

KEY LARGO TRIP!  The Dive flight will be organizing a trip to Key Largo for four days of diving on 10-14 April 2006.  We will be staying at the Ramada Inn just minutes away from the dive shop.  The dive flight will be taking a 45’ Corinthian Catamaran for an Ultra-comfortable, fast ride to the Speigel Grove and other great sites.  Cost would be around $484 or cheaper, to include room, dives, tanks, weights, and breakfast.  Contact Robert Hyde at 217-1261 for more information.
