Eglin Yacht Club SeaNotes

Volume 13 Issue 5                                                       Oct - Nov 2006

 From the Bridge

I want to thank everyone for allowing me the privilege of being your Commodore for the past year and for having enough confidence in me to elect me to another term.  As this year draws to a close, I am pleased to report that we have again met all our fiscal year financial goals.  Keeping our books in the green is key to maintaining the strong support we receive from the 96th Services Squadron.

The greatest strength of our club is our core volunteers.  I may have set our agendas but our volunteers are the ones that made things happen.  I want to give a special thanks to our outgoing Bridge Officers and Board members.  They have done a great job and have supported me in everything we have done.

These key volunteers along with the crews and bartenders who supported our monthly functions kept things running smooth and we all owe them our gratitude and sincere thanks.  Of course, I think we all know this club would not function if it weren’t for the superb job Neil Schaible does as the Club Manager. Neil puts in untold hours to insure the club continues to run smoothly.  We all owe him a big thanks!

Speaking of great volunteers, Linda Gail Martin is giving up the position of Dinner Reservations.  So, we are looking for someone who would like to take over that position starting in January.  Linda Gail, on behalf of all the club members, I want to thank you for the great job you have done for all these years.

As we move into the new year, I am looking forward to working with the new board and making the Eglin Yacht Club even better.  I always welcome your inputs on ways we can improve the club or the way we do business.

Tom Graves

THE GRAPEVINE

By Joan Faris

Only a few illnesses to report since our August Sea Notes were published.  Gary Miller took a trip to Sacred Heart Hospital and had a pacemaker put in to regulate his heart rate.  We are not entirely sure if it was to speed him up or slow him down and Sandy isn’t talking.  He is well on the road to recovery and we should see him back on the water soon.  Charicie Baggett had to spend some time in Fort Walton Beach Medical Center but is now home at Westwood recuperating.  Hazel Schaible’s chemotherapy is going well. She is having more good days than bad.

In our members on the move category:  Ray and Pat Seip have just returned from a trip to Alaska.  I’m sure we will get the details at our next cruise.  Gary and Nancy Combs have just returned from Rome, Italy.  Gary was on a “business trip” like we are buying that story.  How was the shopping Nancy?  Bob Gramm got to go to Japan (a real TDY with real work to do) for two weeks.  Hopefully, he will get some time off to tour a little.  Of course, everyone knows that Ray and Peggy Storey are back with us for a while.  They have already finished the first batch of EYC Polo shirts for us and they look great.  Finally I took a week off with my sister and went to Tampa and Fort Myers for a little R&R.  We had a wonderful time even though the weather didn’t cooperate as well as it could have.  Oh well, when the weather gets tuff – the tuff go shopping!!  In spite of the rain, we did manage to get in a few good beach days.

Don’t forget our next Family Night is SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER!!!  September’s Family night fell over Labor Day weekend and we still had 45 members and family attend.  October’s family night promises to hold some surprises (maybe bratwurst?).  Hope to see you all there.

Remember, when you hear about any of our members who need a little cheer or deserve recognition PLEASE call or e-mail me and I will take it from there.  Contact me by phone at 678-5834 or e-mail joanfaris@aol.com.

See you at the club.

Membership Report

It's that time of the year again - when we have the privilege of paying the expenses for this great yacht club of ours.  Dues ($72) are payable during the month of October.  It really helps our financial standing with the Services Squadron if we can collect all the dues during this period.

Bob Penney and I will be collecting the money and distributing new membership cards at the October Family Night and Membership Night.  You may also mail your checks (payable to EYC) to the following address (please date them 1 Oct 06 or later):

Eglin Yacht Club

P.O. Box 1735

If you are resigning your membership, please call or email me so I can close you out as a member in good standing (651-9514 or bobgramm@cox.net).

We have gained a lot of new members since the last Sea Notes; we now have 182 memberships (89 boaters, 57 divers, and 36 boater/divers).  Please welcome: Scott & Lynette Caulkins, Tom & Lesley Churan, John & Brandi Collins, Chad Dillon, Robin Ducker, Scott & Amanda Engelmeyer, Vaughn & Samantha Heyer, Derek & Kristin Hoffnung, Jeremy Lukits, Thomas Markland, Robert & Melissa Moraws, Todd & Brenda Parr, Fil & Paula Piazza, David & Diane Pope, Mitchell Sathre, Alan & Leslie Shore, Lori & Jerry Smailes, and Sigura Trelstad & Nola Johnson (Lake Shore MN).

Boating Activities
by Pat Siep

I hope everyone had a good Labor Day.  We spent it on a cruise ship in Alaska.  That is a cruise I would go on again tomorrow.

The Commodore’s Champagne Cruise was September 23rd.  As I am writing this that cruise has not happened, so I hope we had a good time.

The October Cruise is not confirmed yet as we have been gone and so has the Commodore.  It is planned for Oct. 14th.  It has been suggested that we go to Apalachicola.  Sandy Miller has volunteered to help plan this cruise.  I need to know who would be interested in going there.  Please call me at 243-5860 or e-mail me at patrays@aol.com and give me your input.         Happy Boating!

Happy cruising!

See you on the water soon!

Marine Hazards

Most of the hazards related to the beach fall into two groups:

1). Puncture wounds and 2). Marine toxins. Injuries from predators (sharks, barracuda, morays, and large grouper) are so rare at the beach as to be newsworthy--but when they occur they need to be treated as noted. Barnacle cuts and sea urchin punctures are particularly painful and difficult to heal.

Marine toxins occur in just about every creature in the ocean as a protective mechanism. At the beach and around piers and jetties we need to be concerned mainly with jellyfish, fire corals and anemones. All of these produce a tiny "nematocyst" inside of which is a toxic barb which, if ruptured, fires off into the skin causing intense pain, burning, redness and swelling. Flush with sea water, vinegar or alcohol but not with fresh water and certainly don't rub it! Meat tenderizer is also said to be helpful. Most people don't realize that "sea lice" are also nematocysts of the thimble jellyfish floating around in water that get under your clothing.

Other frequent injuries that are seen at the beach are puncture wounds from sting rays, sea urchins, scorpion fish and fins or spines from dead fish in the sand (particularly cat fish). Stingray wounds usually occur when the buried animal is stepped upon and he instinctively fires his stinger located at the base of the tail. Most injuries are to the foot and lower leg, but occasionally to the head and neck in snorkelers. Rapid treatment should consist of removal of the stinger, immersion in hot water (45 degrees centigrade, or as hot as one can stand it) for 30-90 minutes, give adequate pain relief, watch for heart irregularities, treat for shock and infection and give tetanus prophylaxis. Spines from sea urchins break off under the skin and sometimes require surgical excision. Vinegar soaks are said to help.

What’s Cooking at EYC?

By The Galley Gourmet

Crispy Baked Basa            .

½ cup almonds, ground and toasted
3 tbsp. cornmeal
2 tbsp. parmesan cheese
2 tblsp. chopped parsley
1 tbsp. flour
½ tsp. lemon pepper
2lbs. basa fillets
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 lemon, wedged

Combine the first 6 ingredients in mixing bowl.  Dip fillets first in lemon juice, then almond mixture to coat thoroughly. Place on baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees, 15 -20 minutes until fish flakes.  Garnish with additional parsley and serve with lemon wedges and your favorite tartar sauce.

NOTE: Basa is a member of the catfish family, farm-raised in fresh water.  The flavor is milder and more delicate than catfish.  When cooked it does not give off a “fishy” smell.  Almost any recipe for flounder will work for Basa but at less cost.  Albertson often has it in their seafood case and Publix has it in the frozen section with other popular fish.
