Volume 12 Issue 4                                      August-September 2005

 From the Bridge

Summer is definitely here and so is an early and active hurricane season.  If you have not picked up a copy of the hurricane preparedness brochure that Gary Combs and Robbie Roberts put together this might be a good time.  Several copies are available in the Club stacked on our bookshelf.  I must again apologize for schedule deviations.  Although we dodged the worst of hurricane Dennis our Membership Night and Fish Fry had to be cancelled due to recovery efforts.  The good news is the club facilities, club house, dive shack, and dock all weathered the storm well.  No new damage to report.  Thanks to Tom Graves and Robert Hyde for making sure everything was secured before we all evacuated.  Let’s hope that we don’t become the target of any more hurricanes this season.  I will work with the Dive Flight to try and reschedule the fish fry as I for one was really looking forward to it.

We still need crews to volunteer to host upcoming Family and Membership Nights so don’t be shy.  As I said last month it really can be fun putting together a function and it doesn’t have to take a lot of time.  To sign up call Hazel at 678-7084, she can let you know which nights are open or simply put your name on the board in the dinning room.  Also on the website there is a Dinner Guide if you need help.

Our annual board and bridge elections are rapidly approaching.  The ballot is being finalized as we speak and the voting will be conducted during our August Membership Meeting, Friday August 19th.  Please make sure you come out to vote for your new Bridge and Board Members.  Remember any regular member of the Club can run for any Bridge or Board office all it takes to get on the ballot is a call to Gray Combs (609-1269) or Robbie Roberts (863-17940).  If you’d like to help shape our Club’s future give one of them a call before August 10th.  The finalized ballot of candidates will be e-mailed and posted on the Club bulletin board by Friday August 12th.

The EYC improvement program took a break in July.  But the dock repairs were completed in June and as I said earlier weathered Dennis well.  We need to move the big cooler in the dinning room.  I still need help coming up with a way to move it.  I would like to target Saturday August 6th as “The Great Cooler Move” day so if you know how we can do that or just need some entertainment, call me to be put you on the “We Can Move the Cooler Crew.”

Stay safe and let’s all pray for good weather and fair seas for the remainder of the summer.  As always, I welcome your inputs.  Please feel free to call or email me at any time if you have concerns, ideas to improve our club, or especially if you would like to volunteer.

FYI: Don’t forget about our new “Sound-Off” column.  Whether you have a gripe or wish to praise some activity or person, we welcome your comments.  Let’s hear from you.  Read more about it later on this webpage.

THE GRAPEVINE

By Joan Faris

Thankfully there is very little to report on member illnesses.  Norma Cote continues to suffer for the muscle injuries she sustained when trying to hold their boat at the Panama City Marina.  Frank Valade has gone to Jacksonville for another back surgery.  We wish them a speedy recovery so they can rejoin club activities.

This was a busy couple of months on the travel front.  Dave Vachon just returned from an Amazon River adventure cruise.  I’m told that he has some spectacular pictures to share.  In June I went to Tortola, BVI for a week with my sister Jean.  The weather was great the whole time we were there. Jean and I swam and snorkeled every day and I managed to get in a little shopping.  It is a beautiful place and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing time where good food and crystal clear waters are endless – No pictures – what happens in the BVI stays in the BVI.  Phil and Astrid Krajeck traveled to Canada to attend a NATO reunion.  They visited with friends and cruised St, Margaret Bay in Halifax.  The Krajecks’ are now in Minnesota to attend Phil’s 50th High School reunion!  Our latest report from Ray and Peggy Storey is that they cruising the Great Lakes enjoying ports-of-call including; Newboro, Ontario, and Westport.  Peggy says the Thousand Islands are just beautiful and they really loved traveling the Rideau Canal.

With Hurricane Dennis behind us let’s hope we are done with storms for the season.  Several members member sustained dock damage (Troy and Kay Dent lost their one-week old dock) and I’ve gotten some reports of minor home and boat damage.  Thankfully, no one has reported serious injuries and everyone still has roofs, although some may be a little leaky, over their heads.  Oh, by the way if anyone sees our dock walkways please send them HOME!

We are still looking for volunteers to run or help at our Family and Membership Nights dinners.  Signing up is easy and they really are fun to put on.  So if you haven’t volunteered lately please do so.

Remember, when you hear about any of our members who need a little cheer or deserve recognition PLEASE call or e-mail me and I will take it from there.  Contact me by phone at 678-5834 or e-mail joanfaris@aol.com.

See you at the club.

Boating Activities
by Tom Graves

The summer boating season got off to a great start with our annual Memorial Day Panama City and Crooked Island Cruise.  This year’s cruise was one of the best we have had in several years.  We started off with 13 boats at the Panama City Marina Friday night where we had a wonderful pot-luck dinner on the dock.  After dinner, the commodore presented Chris Moser, the Panama City Marina Dock Master, with a framed EYC burgee for her continuing support of the EYC and the annual Memorial Day weekend cruise.  Saturday saw 11 of the 13 boats continue on to Crooked Island for the remainder of the weekend.  There were games on the beach Saturday afternoon.  The team of Gary Combs, Gary Miller, Joan Faris and Karen Roberts took all the prizes.  The team of Tom Graves, John Faris, Sandy Miller and Nelly Tharp took the prize for being the best sports.  Ron and Barb Hilson won the Scavenger Hunt collecting 92 of the items on the list.  Happy hour every night of the cruise was fantastic, with folks bringing some of the best hors d’oeuvres I have ever tasted.  The Champaign Dingy Cruise on Sunday afternoon was a riot.  If you don’t believe me, just check out the pictures on the EYC website.  Sunday night brought some wind and rain and the trip through the Gulf from Crooked Island to the Panama City pass was a little rough.  Gary Combs proved you can safely make it on half the engines you started with.

Our 4th of July weekend cruise didn’t have nearly the attendance of the Memorial Day Cruise, but those of us who participated had a wonderful time.  We started out on Friday at Marker 51.  Saturday we ventured down to Pensacola Beach (Quiet Water) for the annual Beach Air show which ended with a spectacular demonstration by the Navy Blue Angles.  We ended the weekend at John Faris’ dock to watch the Niceville fireworks.  Thanks to John for hosting everyone.  This trip, John Faris proved you can make it safely home on the half the engines you started with.

The August cruise is scheduled to go to Pensacola on the 13th and 14th.  We are looking at a number of options, but that location may have to be changed if the dock space in Pensacola doesn’t get any better.  We will take a look at the situation as we get closer and make a decision on whether we have to change the destination.  Also mark your calendars for the Commodore’s Champaign Cruise on 27 August.  This is always a great event.

I am told that boat sales are up in the area, so there are going to be a lot of inexperienced boaters on the water this summer.  Let’s have a safe boating summer and watch out for the other guy who may not know the rules or have the boating experience they should.  Just like in driving, boat defensively!

See you on the water soon!

WHAT’S COOKING AT EYC?

By The Galley Gourmet

OLD-FASHIONED SAUSAGE AND PEPPERS

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1 large red onion, cut into 2-inch chunks
2 red bell peppers, cored, seeded, and cut into 2-inch chunks
2 green bell peppers, cored, seeded, and cut into 2inch chunks
4 fresh hot Italian sausages
4 fresh sweet Italian sausages
1 cup milled or crushed canned Italian plum tomatoes
1 1/2 cups dry red wine
Pinch of dried oregano
Salt and freshly ground pepper

In a large skillet with a lid, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, onion, and peppers, and cook, stirring, until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the sausages, and cook about 4 minutes more, until sausages begin to brown. Add the tomatoes, wine, oregano, and a large pinch of salt. Cover, bring to a simmer, and simmer gently about 25 minutes, until the peppers are very soft. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
