 From the Bridge

As my second term as your Commodore draws to a close, I just want to say thank you to everyone for all your help and support.  The last couple of years would not have been so successful for the club without your help and support.  I hope you will give the new Commodore the same help and support so we can continue to have an active and successful club.  I want to give a special thanks to all our volunteers that have contributed so much the last couple of months.  We have had some great events and our club is looking much better thanks to all your hard work.  Our club work day on 9 June was a tremendous success.  Below is a list of all the people that came out and contributed a day of hard work and sweat to improve the quality of our facility:

Tom Graves Lynne Graves   John Faris  Armand Izzo
Jim Brown   Troy Dent  Kevin O’Leary Phil Krajeck
Jim Tharp Mike Graham Jim Bayes  Astrid Krajeck
Robbie Roberts  Jane Rinell  Jon Brown Jeff Roxstrom
Jerry Cote Dave Lester Fred Westfall Doug Rinell

If you see these folks around the club, please give them a big thanks for all their hard work.  Below is a list of everything that was accomplished on work day:

Replaced ceiling tiles in kitchen area, disposed of trash / unused equipment in club, re-attached circuit breaker cover in inside storeroom, labeled circuit breakers, cleaned, stripped and waxed club tile floor, cleaned out paint locker, pressure washed picnic tables & deck, pressure washed sidewalk down to dock, water sealed deck after pressure wash, cleaned up the outside club area, cleaned up fire wood pile, trimmed reeds & weeds along shoreline, cleaned out outside storeroom and disposed of unused items, painted food storage cabinet, installed shutoff valve in water line to dock, cleaned entire kitchen area and disposed of unused items, cleaned both ovens in kitchen, replaced lamps in Neil’s work area, replaced broken coffee pot, added supports under the cabinets in men’s restroom, cleaned out BBQ pit and surrounding area.

The great volunteers don’t stop there though.  Pat Seip has been doing a terrific job as our cruise director and Mike Graham has organized some great dive trips.  A big thanks to Dave and Winnie and Jim and Nellie for hosting us for our progressive dinner cruise.  Robbie Roberts organized a fabulous 4th of July Cruise.  Your board has been working extremely hard to improve the club, and the list goes on and on.  The list of people doing great things to insure the club keeps functioning is too numerous to mention.  So, the next time you see someone helping out, give them a big thanks or join in and give them a hand.  It is the volunteers that keep our club going.

It has been a great honor and pleasure to serve as your commodore for the past two years, and I really appreciate your help and faith in me.  I look forward to working with the new Flag Officers and Board Members.  I know they will continue to work hard to make improvements and make our club even better.  Thanks again for all your support.

Tom Graves

THE GRAPEVINE

By Joan Faris

Sadly the only thing to report since our last Sea Notes is the passing of Millie Altum.  Millie passed away on 9 July 2007.  She was a dear friend to everyone who knew and long time Eglin Yacht Club supporter.  In this great time of sorrow please keep Millie’s family in your prayers.

In our members on the move category:  The Dents recently returned from Germany where they took a river cruise.  Troy said it was absolutely fabulous and although he gave it his best effort there still is some beer and wine left over there.  John and I traveled to Las Vegas to attend the Stealth Fighter Association 25th Year Reunion.  It was Wonderful.  We renewed friendships and unlike Troy we did manage to run at least two bars out of all there stock!!  As an added bonus, John took me to see Celine Dion’s Show at Caesar’s Place. It was more that I could have hoped for and a perfect ending to our short vacation.

Remember, when you hear about any of our members who need a little cheer or deserve recognition PLEASE call or e-mail me and I will take it from there.  Contact me by phone at 678-5834 or e-mail joanfaris@aol.com.

See you at the club.

Boating Activities
by Pat Siep

The boating season has finally arrived and so far we are having a great time.  The Progressive Dinner was great fun. I want to give a special thank you to Dave Vachon, Winnie Hunt, Sally Woodward and Jim and Nellie Tharp.  I know that everyone that went had a good time.  We even got in the water and drank great margaritas.

The boaters who went on the 4th of July Cruise really enjoyed it.  I want to give a special thanks to Robbie.  Fort McRae was nice until the jellyfish showed up.  The Wharf was a lot of fun.  We all went to the water park.  Later on some rode the ferris wheel and some went for malts.  The women did some shopping.  Then it was on to Palafox Marina.  We had a good happy hour on the dock with our new drink called “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere”.  Gary Combs was nice enough to fix a breakfast one morning.  All the food was very good and no one went hungry.

Our next cruise is Marker 51 on July 28th.  The Commodore’s Champagne cruise will be Aug. 25th.  The Labor Day Cruise location is pending.

If you are going on any of the cruises, let me know before that cruise so we will have an idea of how many will be there.  My home phone is 243-5860 or e-mail me at queenpz@cox.net.

See you on the water soon!

Dive Activities News

By Michael Graham

The dive season is going really strong right now.  We've had eight club dive trips to the Gulf of Mexico and one to the Florida Keys this year.  Our first club trip to the Oriskany is scheduled for August.  Visibility locally has been as good as 100+ feet and as bad as 15 feet.  Water temperatures are now in the mid 80s on the surface and upper 70s on the bottom.  We’ve been seeing large numbers of fish and lobster (only shovelnose so far) this year, with huge juvenile fish populations, which bode well for next year.  The weather has also been great for diving, so if you haven't been out yet, you're really missing a lot of fun.  We now have over 120 diving members in the yacht club and that’s increasing almost daily.  Our biggest limitation is a shortage of rental equipment, which we are working on.  Hopefully we’ll have 15 new regulators by the time the next Sea Notes is published.  We also have a line on a new compressor and plan on buying more nitrox tanks and some 63 cubic foot tanks for those who want smaller and lighter tanks.

Now that spiny lobster season is upon us, we’ll see even more divers out in the Gulf.  Please be careful.  Florida has recorded several diving fatalities this year, one on the first day of the lobster mini-season.  A lot of people wait until now to start their personal diving season, just because of the lobsters.  They don’t check their scuba equipment, but make sure their catch bag and tickle stick are in good order, because they’re focused on getting the bugs.  They splash down without a good buddy check because they want to be the first on the bottom.  They leave their buddy behind because they don’t want to share the lobsters.  They stay too long on the bottom to get that one last lobster that’s hiding back in a deep hole.  They reach way back into that deep hole to get said lobster without looking around first, and are quite surprised when Mr. Moray bids bites them hello.  They skip their safety stop because they’re low on air, they’re bleeding profusely from the moray bite, or they feel they need to get their catch to the surface sooner to show everyone what a great hunter they are.  They cut their surface interval short in order to get back in the water sooner because they know that those devious lobsters are evacuating the area because they heard a genuine lobster hunter is about.  They exceed their no decompression limits on the second dive but skip the deco stop because they stuck a lobster inside their wetsuit when they ran out of room in the catch bag (or they forgot their catch bag because they were in such a hurry to get back in the water), and now it’s turning their upper torso into hamburger.  And to top it all off, they want to take the lobsters to the emergency room and into the recompression chamber with them because some evil doer might steal the bugs while they’re going through a Table 6 profile.  So, be smarter than the lobsters.  Think before you dive.
