February 2004 Meeting Minutes

Fairfax Villa Elementary School Meeting
February 11, 2004

The monthly meeting of the Fairfax Villa PTA was held Wednesday, February 11, 2004 in the conference room of Fairfax Villa Elementary School.

Board Members Present:

   Juan Lopez, President

Clare Talbert, Vice President

   Katharine Schultz, Treasurer

Tammy Harper, Secretary

  Juan Lopez called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM.   

January minutes were read and accepted.  

Treasurer’s Report: 

  • Katharine Schultz Highlighted points.  $100 Cookbook sales. $3.50 Art refund for a check not cashed.   The budget was accepted and approved.

  •   

Principal’s Report: Dr. Clark

  • States are displaying dissatisfaction with the No Child Left Behind Law, not enough money to fund the mandate.

  • Lost days due to the snow and ice.  

Mrs. Herman

  • The second grade Nagileri test results are due next week.

  • Cluster VII group is coming next month to see school plan in four subject area.  The Villa is making progress on the plan.  

Teacher’s Report:  Melissa Brawley

  • No report.

  • Juan will put a note in the teachers boxes asking if the PTA can help the staff in any area, does the staff need anything, and to remind the staff to submit their teachers receipts.

Special Committees:

  • Programs:  A program on April 30 – Books: The Magic is Real.

  • T-Shirts:  Flyer on Spring Sale to go home in Tuesday Package.

  • Cookbooks:  $ 100 in sales

  • Original Art Works:  Asking for an extension for turning in the artwork.

  • Superintendent’s Advisory Committee: 1. The search for a new Superintendent is still on.  2. There are a few problems with students who are not going to get diploma this school year due to verified credits.  3. Title One School– parents are pulling children from schools that are not passing.  Problems arise to where the children will then attend.  4. Thomas Jefferson admissions – trying to increase admission numbers so more children can attend.  5. February 16 and April 2 will now be snow make up days.  6. Kings Dominion Law – the start of school after Labor Day, only 1/3 of the schools follow this law.  

New Business

  • Reflection Program:  A Villa fifth grader, William L., won an award.  A ceremony will be February 26 at 7PM at Thomas Jefferson.  Next year theme:  A Different Kind of Hero.

  • PTA Day @ General Assembly:  Was February 9.  The Northern VA committee met with Governor Warner, talked about revenue enhancement.  Presented bills for consideration.

  • Superintendent’s Proposed Budget for 2005:  Copies will be in the PTA box on Friday.

  • Volunteer Fairfax:  Let Juan know if we have any volunteer to nominate.

  • Pictures for Retirees:  Mrs. Graham will get her photo of the school at later date.

  • Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Admissions Restructuring:  Will be moving TJ in the future to a new, bigger site.  More students will then be able to attend.

  • Kid Safe:  Free ID cards for all PTA affiliated school students.  Will look into doing it at the Villa. ·        

  • Cluster VII meeting is March 3.  The Villa PTA meeting will be reschedule to March 10.  

Old Business

  • Spring Dance:  March 19.  The Fall Dance will be October 29.

  • 5 Cents for Education:  Juan sent in a bunch of forms to the VA Legislatures.  

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM
