The Fred Heutte Center is pleased to
continue its Urban Gardener Lecture Series for 2003. The series continues
to be funded by a generous grant from The Norfolk Foundation.
We have gathered a variety of speakers who will provide expertise in different gardening-related fields. The series is geared for beginners and specialists. While the program is free for members of the Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation and members of the Master Gardeners Program, the cost for non-members is $ 5.00 per person. All lectures will be held at the Center.
Learn how to successfully grow your own Meyer's lemons and Owari mandarins in Norfolk - outdoors! Norfolk Master Gardener, Ron Brown, will provide information on growing and winter protection techniques for varieties that can do well here. He's loaded with sources of plants and other information!

Winter Care & Pruning of Trees
with Oscar Richardson
At this lecture and demonstration, Mr. Richardson will provide you with information on the proper methods of care for your ornamental trees with emphasis on pruning. Weather permitting, part of the workship will be conducted out-of-doors.

Adding Color to Your Fall & Winter Garden
with Sandy McDougle
Is your garden drab in the fall and winter? It doesn't have to be! Sandy McDougle, owner of Sandy's Plants in Richmond will share her secrets in how to add color to your Fall and Winter garden. Now is the time to begin planting for color this fall and winter.
Sandy's Plants is the one of the largest perennial plant nurseries in Virginia and Sandy is a guru on perennial plants. Sandy knows her perennials! She also knows our area and which plants do well here. Her nursery carries over 2500 varieties of perennial plants and she propagates most of them. This year alone, she added over 200 new varieties to her catalog. She's also including a section on using container plants to add color to small urban gardens during the fall and winter.
This class will teach you everything you need to know to make beautiful gourmet soaps just in time for holiday gift giving. During the class time, you will make handmade soap using exotic vegetable oils and aromatic essential oils, as well as dried herbs from the Heutte Center's own garden. You will not only take home some beautiful soap, but you will also receive all the information you need for making soap in your own kitchen, from where to purchase supplies to curing your soaps, to ideas on gift packaging for the holidays. In addition, Becky will have herbal soaps and other herbal products for purchase.Safety goggles and gloves will be provided. This class requires pre-registration and pre-payment of a materials fee of $10.00.
So you grow several varieties of trees, plants, and shrubs and yearn to bring all those beautiful fall colors from your trees, shrubs, and other plants indoors. Horticulturist and flower designer David Pippin, President of Creations & Ideas, Inc., in Richmond, will show you how! He'll take supermarket bouquets, augment them with outdoor garden plants, add a little hocus pocus, and create four dazzling designs suitable for the fall holidays. Four lucky attendees will be taking a design home with them as a door prize! The program is free for Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation members, and $5.00 for non-members. 10 AM - 12 NoonYou see them in all of the gardening magazines, and if you've priced them you know that they're expensive to buy. Now you can make your own and save money! Bill Smoot takes you step-by-step in making this beautiful copper obelisk for just $25.00! It will be an instant focal point in your garden! The copper obelisk stands approximately five foot tall and can be used to support a climbing plant in the garden, or it can be used with a large container.The class is limited to 8 people so call now to reserve your spot!

Wouldn't a bottle of tasty liqueur add cheer and make a fantastic holiday gift? Herbalist extraordinaire Barbara Brawley will share her recipes with you and teach you how to make your own herbal and fruit liqueurs. The class is being scheduled early so that your liquors will be ready to give as holiday gifts. Each participant will be making 1 bottle of mint liqueur and 1 bottle of kahlua. You'll also learn which herbs to use in making other liqueurs. In addition to the bottle of mint liqueur, participants will also be making a bottle of kahlua - the famous coffee liqueur! Now you have another reason excuse to purchase herbs at our spring herb sales.This class is limited to 15 participants and is free for members and Master Gardeners and $5.00 for non-members. The cost of materials is $20.00. This class requires pre-registration and pre-payment of materials.
The largest, most prestigious flower show held is the Chelsea Flower Show, the standard on which other flower shows are based! The show is held every May in the Chelsea section of London. While we all are not able to attend this grand event, two of our FHC board members did! Bill Smoot & Frances Thrash will show you what you missed, as they detail their trip to the 2003 Chelsea Flower Show.
Mike (Norfolk Botanical Garden) will show slides on his recent trip to China for the International Camellia Congress. He will talk about the people, plants, and places he saw on his 3 week tour of eastern and central China. A visual journey of natural beauty, incredible history, wonderful crafts and culture and a look at different horticultural techniques!
Water is an element that adds a unique diminsion to gardens. Its tranquil effects are soothing. You can add a water feature to your garden no matter what size garden you have. Bill Smoot will detail some of the water features he's seen on his trips to various countries and gardens. You'll learn how to add water features to you garden in many unusual and economical ways.
Patty Adkins will explore the definition, requirements, possibilities, and natural beauty of xeriscaping in Tidewater. Xeriscaping involves waste-efficient landscaping utilizing slow-growing, drought tolerant plants to conserve water and reduce yard trimmings, among other effects. Patty is a certified arborist, Virginia Certified Horticulturist, commercial pest applicator, Board Member of HRNLA, and is soon to receive her degree in landscape design.
Elizabeth, Foundation Board Member and Co-chair of FHC Volunteer Gardeners will cover topics related to herbs including: requirements for growing and locating herbs, uses of herbs, preserving herbs, and cooking with herbs.
You don't have to move to Florida to get that tropical garden look. In this program, gardener Bill Smoot shows you how to create that tropical look right here in the Tidewater area! You'll get a peek at his backyard tropical garden which is literally a jungle! You'll learn which tropical plants you can grow in the Tidewater area, and which hardy plants you can substitute to create that tropical effect. He'll also cover ways to "push the envelope" and grow plants which you thought you wouldn't be able to grow in the Tidewater area. You too can be the Tarzan of your tropical paradise!
Kim Kaplan is the public affairs special project director for the Agricultural Research Service, USDA's in-house science agency. Among the issues for which she handles public affairs, for ARS are the U.S. National Arboretum, biotechnology and genetic engineering, germplasm exploration, intellectual property rights, and Africanized honey bees. Most recently, she has been the lead on the production of the newest edition of the USDA Plant Zone Hardiness Map. Educationally, she combines an undergraduate degree in animal science and graduate work in immunology with a masters in journalism. Before coming to work for ARS, she worked on staff and freelance covering science, environment, finance and Capitol Hill for newspapers and magazines such as the Dallas Morning News, American Banker Financial Daily, and many others.
