The Fred Heutte Center is pleased to
continue its Urban Gardener Lecture Series for 2005. The series continues
to be funded by a generous grant from The Norfolk Foundation.
We have gathered a variety of speakers who will provide expertise in different gardening-related fields. The series is geared for beginners and specialists. While the program is free for members of the Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation and members of the Master Gardeners Program, the cost for non-members is $ 5.00 per person. All lectures will be held at the Center.
MAKING HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS

Join horticulturist Carol Chewning (

These ornaments are made from a variety of materials, including some from the herb garden and the kitchen spice cabinet! Along the way we’ll talk about the holiday lore associated with our herb and spice ingredients. They make excellent holiday gifts that you’ll cherish for years to come! Cost of class and materials is $5.00 per person for Heutte Center members/Master Gardeners and $10.00 for non-members. Pre-registration and advance payment are required! E-Z FALL DECORATIONS
Frances Thrash

Let professional floral arranger and Southern Living at Home consultant, Frances Thrash show you how to decorate your home for any holiday with a black wrought iron container. Participants will be making the pictured floral arrangement for upcoming holiday parties or a Thanksgiving table centerpiece. This container is very flexible and can be easily adapted for multiple decorating uses. Frances will demonstrate how this container can be easily adapted for food service, other floral arrangements, candleholders, or a combination of all three! THE WONDER OF WINTER VEGETABLESHorticulturists Carol Chewning (

Both are quite knowledgeable and are excellent horticultural speakers in their own right; likewise, both are excellent cooks! Combine them together into a single program and you get one that is both informative as well as tasteful! Their program focuses on vegetables which are often overlooked, but are available during the winter months. These winter vegetables are hearty and nutritious and can add a wonderful variety at mealtime. Many of these easy to grow vegetables are not grown in the winter garden because people are not familiar with them, or they don’t know how to prepare them! Join Carol and Janel as they explore the wonder of winter vegetables! They’ll share recommendations for winter vegetables that you are easy-to-grow locally, as well as their tried-and-true delicious recipes for cooking these vegetables. And they will have samples for you to try. Your winter garden won’t be the same!
Concrete Leaf Casting

Did you know that images of large leaves can be permanently captured in concrete to produce beautiful objets d’art? These concrete leaf castings have a multitude of uses in your home or garden. They can be used as table decorations, bird feeders, personalized gifts, soap dishes, garden art, or as a birdbath. Each participant will learn how to make and decorate a leaf casting and take home with them. Cost of materials is $5.00 per person. Class is limited to 12 participants. Pre-registration is required.
An American Cutting Garden Suzanne McIntire

Want to grow plants that you can use "double-duty" in you garden and in your home as bouquets or flower arrangements? It's not as easy as you might think. Suzanne McIntire shares her secrets for establishing a cutting garden - from site preparation, layout, plant selection, coordinating bloom, and harvesting. She is the author of An American Cutting Garden: A Primer for Growing Cut Flowers Where Summers Are Hot and Winters Are Cold.
Copies of Suzanne's book will be available for purchase and autograph after her program.
In An American Cutting Garden Suzanne McIntire describes how to plan a cutting garden, choose suitable plants, keep the garden in good order, and harvest a bountiful crop, all with charm and humor. Using both common and botanical names, she discusses in depth a wide variety of herbaceous perennials, biennials, annuals, and bulbs. McIntire includes information on topics such as the length of stems one might expect from the cutting garden, how many plants are needed of any one kind, when and how to sow seed outdoors, the heat-hardiness of plants, and strategies for coping with the effects of hot summers and cold winters.
PLANT SWAP
If you have any excess trees, shrubs, houseplants, or perennials, pot them up and bring them to the center. You will be able to swap your plants with others, one-for-one! Remaining plants will be available for purchase at $2.00 per pot from 3:00pm – 4:00pm only! One-for-one swapping ends at 3:00 PM! Swap your excess plants for new ones. Come join in on the fun!
SWAP RULES
The rules are very simple:
1. Pot up any excess plants (perennials, houseplants, etc.) which you may have in a 1-qt or larger size plastic pot.
2. Supply this following information on the pot:
a. Plant common name and genus/species/cultivar name if known
b. Plant requirements (such as light, water, soil); if you don’t know these, bring the plants anyway as we’ll have seasoned gardeners who can assist you in identifying your plants.
3. Trading is simple! No price value will be placed on any of the plants - you bring in 3 pots of plants, you take home 3 pots of plants! There is no limit on the number of pots that you can bring to exchange.
4. All swapping will end at 03:00pm. Plants not exchanged by 3:00pm will then be available for
purchase. Proceeds of sale will go to the Heutte Center Perennial Display Garden.
5. Participants with four or more pots are asked to donate one pot to the Heutte Center.

Bill Smoot visited London in May and he didn’t bring us t-shirts! But he did bring back hundreds of pictures of his trip. While there he visited several gardens in the London vicinity and the 2005 Chelsea Flower Show. Come see what the greatest flower show in the world had to offer this year without having to fight through the crowds.
A Collage of Containers: Container Gardening

Horticulturalist Janel Leatherman show you how to create attractive outdoor containers to expand your growing space, accent garden areas, and provide floral interest in empty corners. Her program will include topics such as plant and pot selection, soil, fertilizer, watering, and design principles.
Feng Shui: Harmonizing Your Outer Space

The principles of Feng Shui teach us that our surroundings have a tremendous subconscious impact on our health, attitude, relationships, and success. By making subtle changes you are able to positively influence your life. While most Feng Shui principles are applied to harmonizing our homes, they can be equally applied to harmonizing that space outside our homes – the outside of our homes and in our gardens! Feng Shui practitioner and consultant, Bonnie Primm looks at how Feng Shui principles can be applied to your outer spaces - the layout, shape, elements, color and design, paths, fences and gates of gardens to affect a sense of harmony and balance.
Carnivorous Plants Lecture and Workshop! Michael Szesze Sunday, August 14th , 1 PM Most of us are familiar with Venus flytraps, but what other plants are carnivorous? Why are these plants carnivorous? Michael Szesze will be glad to tell you why! He’s the owner of a Maryland nursery specializing in Carnivorous Plants (www.carnivorousplantnursery.com). His program will astonish and amaze you with its colorful slides and unbelievable facts about these alluring plants. Carnivorous Plants Workshop 2:15 – 3:15 PM In this workshop Michael will demonstrate how to create a miniature carnivorous garden. Participants will then create their own 5" glass rose bowl terrarium, housing a representative of each type of carnivorous plant, to take home with them. Michael will also cover culture and care of your plants. All materials supplied, including round glass terrarium bowl. Cost of this workshop, including materials is $20.00 per person. Advance reservations/payment required. Kelly Matteson Wednesday, September 7th , 7 PM On en-route to her vacation trip to Alaska this year, Portsmouth Master Gardener Kelly Matteson visited Vancouver, B.C. for a couple of days. Like any good gardener, she visited several gardens while there and took lots of pictures! Her program documents these gardens renowned worldwide for their great beauty, made possible by Vancouver’s microclimate and excellent conditions for growing plants. Kelly is President of The Portsmouth Master Gardener group.
