The BYU Molecular Genealogy Research Group (MGRG) is
in the process of constructing a genetic-genealogical database. This database is
designed to be a valuable resource for genealogical investigation.
Molecular Genealogy links individuals together in "family trees" based
on the unique identification of genetic markers. This is accomplished by using
the information encoded in the DNA of an individual and/or population to
determine the relatedness of individuals, families, tribal groups, and
populations. Pedigrees based on genetic markers can reveal relationships not
detectable in genealogies based only on names, written records, or oral
traditions. A genetic identification is unique and can even discriminate between
closely related individuals or those sharing the same name. The fact that DNA is
inherited and that each individual is the product of his/her progenitors means
that DNA can be used to not only create unique identifications, but also to
identify members of the same family, the same clan or tribal group, or the same
population.
In order to make the database as informative as possible, more than 100,000
people from at least 500 worldwide populations will be included in this study.
Due to the size and scope of this project, it is expected to take several years.
Individuals 18 years or older from all geographic and ethnic backgrounds are
eligible to participate in this study.
Each participant will need to provide:
1. At least a complete 4-generation biological pedigree chart with names,
dates and places of birth. A copy of the chart can be printed from the project
web site.
2. Approximately 10 cc (approximately 2 tablespoons) of blood are needed for
this study and will be drawn by an experienced phlebotomist.
3. A consent form, which will be provided at the blood draw location, or can be
printed from the project web site.
The entire process will take less than 10 minutes. Participant privacy and
confidentiality is ensured throughout all aspects of the study.
Representatives from the project will be here to provide an overview,
answer questions, and collect samples.
For more detailed information regarding the project, the research
progress, or questions, please see the official web site at: http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu
