DEDICATION
This little book is lovingly dedicated to my sister, Elizabeth Bradshaw Haldane Sawtelle. She shared the basis for this adventure directly, and the rest, vicariously. She bought me "The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge" and enthused with me through research and discovery. She was my little "Indian" companion at play as children in Ashland, Maine, and a motivator for this writing. Thanks, Bets.

I read your "Room For Indians Section".
I really appreciate your words and pictures of my grandfather WASU MAZA and not
WASEE MAZA, I got a hold of Joe Starita after I had read the book and met him at
an Oglala Lakota College graduation and gave him the proper spelling of
grandfather's name. I am Marie, the one you didn't get to meet in Pine Ridge
when you sent to visit my mother Celane...I was really sorry that I didn't get
to meet you. Mom (Celane) passed away in December 1998 and Dad (Jonas) passed
away in May 2000. I was sure glad to see my grandfather and my mother in your
pictures. Wopila tanka. Marie

Many thanks for your wonderful site. I am in possession of a photo of Dewey Beard, his wife, my mother and I taken in June 1940 in South Dakota. We are posed outside a tepee which could be the one you mention in one of your articles.
I also have pictures taken in 1940 of the stairs that were built for the workmen at Mt. Rushmore. My family climbed up to the top and I have pictures of my mother and I standing on top of Washington's and Jefferson's heads. Your 1941 photo of Mt. Rushmore helps to explain the ropes, stakes, and holes in the rock visible in my photos. Thanks again!!

I read, with interest, about your visit with Guy
Dull Knife Jr. I am greatly saddened that he cannot pursue the remainder of the
sculptures that he wanted to make. I have seen his work; it glows with an inner
beauty. Are you interested in creating a foundation to help fund this legacy?
How can I, and others help?
Sincerely, Claire Talltree
