This was quite a
time for FM DX. The E-skip opening of July 6 reached 162.400 MHz; but the
FM band was filled with signals from Maine to Virginia. The highlights
included three new signals from the Washington area (WAMU, WJZW and WRQX),
adding two new stations from Delaware, and three stations trading places
dominating on 105.9 (WHCN, WXJN and WBCI). The July 13 E-skip opening brought
two new Florida stations, while the July 20 trop opening brought in two
new Iowa stations (KOJY and KWCC). Trop openings on two consecutive nights
(August 2 and 3) brought three new stations from Missouri (KWBZ, KJPW and
KNLN), as well as two new Arkansas stations (KMXF and KKIX) and a new FM
(KNYD) from the Tulsa area. KMXF was noted carrying voicetracked bits from
Carson Daly; the same thing aired on Clear Channel-owned WXAJ 99.7. The
dial was packed with French stations on the August 4 E-skip opening; another
record fell with the reception of CJRE 97.9, beating the previous record
holder, KCLK 94.1 Clarkston, WA, by 15 miles. The first FM from New Brunswick
was noted with CJSE 89.5. The big surprise of the August 24 trop opening
was WBWN 104.1, pulled through WRDA (and I live six miles south of WRDA’s
