I suspect the
Es was in all night on the 29th/30th.
Opening on the
25th was interesting. I’d been participating in the CQ WPX ham radio contest
and was surprised to contact a handful of European stations in early-mid
afternoon on 28 MHz. It was well past when any propagation to Europe would
normally be over, and in any case the sunspot numbers lately haven’t been
nearly good enough to support trans-Atlantic signals on that band via F2-skip.
All the Europeans were in adjoining countries – Czech Republic, Hungary,
Slovakia, Croatia and Serbia/Montenegro. This is presumably 4Es. The 99.1
signal on that date was probably Toronto. If I’d realized it at the time
I would have taken more care to get a parallel, and to find other area
stations. I’ve seen CKVR-3 many times but never had an identified signal
from Toronto.

The first E-skip
opening since 2001 brought several new stations into this QTH. WBUF 92.9
was a big surprise; the only other Buffalo area catches have been via trop
(WDCX 99.5 plus two UHF TV stations). WVPS and WXKS were battling it out
on 107.9 (thanks to Adam Rivers for clarifying the slogan for WXKS). WVPS
is only the second Vermont stations heard at this QTH (the other one heard
was WEZF 92.9, also from Burlington, on July 11, 1996). CBFX was another
pleasant surprise, with the second CBC French network; the other CBC French
station is on 95.1. I have heard on Glenn Hauser’s “Continent of Media”
that the CBC has been having signal problems with their 88.5 CBC Radio
One (EE) outlet in that city. I’m not surprised I haven’t heard it here,
even with WGCA and KUMR parked there, and a local parked on 88.7.
The second E-skip
opening didn’t get far into the FM band; it stopped at 92.9 MHz. Skip signals
had a hard time getting through KGRC. Likewise, with skip signals on 92.7
getting through KLOZ/WQLZ. It was mostly a TV event. As of 6/10/03, 685
FM stations have been heard at this location. 73, Eric (N0UIH)

This pretty much
wraps up an era in my DXing history here. The Probe 9 (actually half of
one, mounted on a nightstand in the loft of my home) has been retired in
favor of my first outdoor antenna, an APS-9B. I’m living proof that you
don’t have to have a huge outdoor antenna array to get great reception….tho
it doesn’t hurt, of course. Actually, the big reason for going to the new
antenna is that my wife wants the Probe 9 out of the loft cause the loft
doubles as our kid’s schoolroom. Conditions have been pretty poor since
finally completing the set up, but what I’ve noticed so far in being able
to hear a few semi-locals much better bodes well for the APS-9B. If you’d
like to see all that went into putting up the antenna, go to FMDXWeb.com
and click on An Antenna Story. And if anyone ever tells ya putting up an
outside antenna is easy, don’t believe them!

Great support
for the column, y’all! Please keep the reports coming. So far this season
is shaping up a lot better than the last couple.
E-mail reports
are easiest to handle here, but I certainly do appreciate all of you who
still use snail mail. The bottom line is: Report!
See y’all next
month!
