Notes:
(1)Sitting around after a day of driving, tuned up to the frequency and heard the station.
(2) Didn’t know tropo was still around until I pulled up to the frequency and heard “Complicated.”
(3) Not too far distance (115 miles) but since I was facing south, I couldn’t get much from the north. I want into the week expecting to listen to WAEZ from Johnson City TN for regular listening, and not being able to get my favorite CHR ever, WNKS Charlotte, because of terrain. But actually WNKS and the rest of Charlotte was strong. I was facing south with a mountain behind me, so I think that contributed.
(4) Amazed that a station NW of me could beat WBT, but it did.
(5) Never believed something like that would come in in full stereo.

Didn’t wake up until 0800, so I wasn’t able to scan entire dial before morning enhancement dissipated. Rain on the 28th must have evaporated since there was no noticeable enhancement the next 2 mornings.
Picked up a strange unID this trip. It came in strongest on 89.75 (set tunes in halves of tenths), but still sounded slightly off tuned. Ided as “Genesis Radio Network,” carries various conservative and populist programs – some religious, some strictly political. They were hawking shortwave antennas for better reception.
Heard a 2nd station behind WVPG 90.3 NPR echoing about .2 second behind. No other WV NPR on that frequency, so still haven’t found a way to distinguish WV NPRs on same frequency (88.9, 89.9, 91.7).
I’m in need of tubes for a 1975 GE television. Give me a call at (301) 583-0531. Also, I have a copy of the issue of “The Week” magazine that contains an article on Philo Farnsworth. I’ll send a copy of it on request.

Good news….6/14 was the first ever RDS logged via Es on the DX-398 purchased last December. Bad news…on 6/14 I was in Arbutus, MD, just SW of Baltimore and in the Baltimore-DC corridor where FM “birdies,” harmonics, spurs or whatever are everywhere. I feel fortunate to have heard any DX. The 6/14 Es “cloud” looks like it was centered somewhere around the Indiana-Ohio border per my loggings and those of Jim Renfrew, Jerry Bond and others. The “cloud” didn’t seem to move at all as most of my meager 10 loggings were in strong for at least two hours.

On July 22, 2002, I had the antenna height increased from 28’ (8 meters) to 35’ (10.6 meters). Also, the RG-59U cable that I had used for the last ten years was replaced with RG-6 cable. This has resulted in somewhat better FM reception (the best results of the new cable/antenna height can be seen on UHF TV). So, I tested it out on the FM side, and found that I could null out semi-locals (such as KHCR 97.7) to hear DX. This was the case with the WMOI reception on July 24. One of my closest unheards was finally bagged on July 31 in the form of WGEL 101.7 (only 50 miles away in Greenville, IL). On that frequency, I also have a semi-local parked there (KLPW Union, MO). Now, the closest unheard is 100.1 in DeSoto (hard to do with locals on 99.9 and 100.3).
The Twin Cities made it in for only the second time at this QTH; a new one was added from the area in the form of WLTE 102.9. Two days later, the same metro area was in again, but this time, only on 98.5 and 99.5. Hearing Bruce Hanson on KTIS 98.5 was a pleasant surprise; the station I worked for in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, WFTD 1080 Marietta, GA, carried his afternoon show from Skylight, “Panorama.” Another new one was added that morning in the form of WVSI 88.9, simulcasting WSIU 91.9 in Carbondale, IL. I often wonder why WSIU would need a relay in Mount Vernon, when they’re a semi-local in the Mount Vernon area. Anyway, the FM total stands at 680 as of August 10. 73, Eric (N0UIH)

Wow, what a showing by members in the Old Line State! Thanks to them, and Adam and Eric, for a great column this month. Glad to see someone got some DX this year. Es here has been extremely meager. I was hoping the convention would spark something, but that didn’t happen. Now if I had scheduled it just a week later, those attending would’ve had a great Friday night of western DXing. Oh, well……
Speaking of the convention, be sure to check out the wrap up of WTFDA 2002 elsewhere in this issue. I had a great time hosting it. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to get to another convention in the future and meet some of our eastern members.
     See y’all next month!
