I Dxed from Jeffersontown KY 7/22-25. 120 stations were logged, with state totals being 65 from Kentucky, 42 from Indiana, 9 from Ohio, 2 from Tennessee and 2 from Illinois. Best frequency was 97.9 with 3 stations. I stayed in a private home, so I was not able to use “building screening” (moving from one side of a motel to the other to attenuate locals). I returned in September, staying on the southeast side of a Holiday Inn, and picked up 3 new Kentucky stations, WSGS Hazard 101.1, WVLE Scottsville 99.3 and WAKY Springfield 102.7. I should be returning here in the spring.
August 24-27 I was able to DX from the Holiday Inn in Meadville PA using a modified Radio Shack DX-440. Logged 109 stations, including 59 from PA, 44 from OH, 2 from WV, 1 from NY, and 3 from ON. BTW, 12 of the stations were logged on a 1997 Saturn car radio only.
The Meadville event was undoubtedly the most disappointing scan I have ever done! This spot looks excellent on paper, with not too many locals clogging the dial and with big cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Detroit and Toronto 100-200 miles away. Summer “broke” a few days before arrival. There didn’t seem to be any morning enhancement off Lake Erie. I was also bothered by unexplained imaging of an Ohio stations 25 miles away.
I’m looking at Hillsboro, in southeast Ohio, and South Boston VA for next summer. The latter is 40 miles west of South Hill, where I did my personal best scan of 211 in 1988.

The Leonids meteor shower was a big disappointment here, both from a DX and a viewing standpoint. It appears it was that way for many others, except Girard Westerberg and Saul Chernos, who really cashed in. Oh, well….lots of other showers to DX!
Hope you have a great Christmas and a DX-filled new Year!
