Although not as fast as driving, pedal-pushing on two wheels can be just as fun.
There is a hiking/biking/jogging trail that is just a couple of blocks from my Omaha apartment (the Keystone/Big Papio trails). When I have the time, I enjoy taking a ride of about 14 miles (or more) on the trail. Typically, that happens in the early morning, but sometimes I'll go for rides after sunset, too.
The Wabash Trace Nature Trail in southwest Iowa is also close to home. It's a more rugged ride than the Keystone Trail but it's also a little more scenic. A very early morning ride on the Wabash Trace is also a wonderful experience.
I also took my bike to Utah once (the picture on the right), thinking I could tackle the trails there. I wasn't prepared for the extreme ride most of the mountain biking trails provided. Instead, I stuck mostly to dirt roads, but I did manage a ride on a somewhat grueling Jeep trail.
Below are some pictures from my bike rides. Most (all but the one on the top left) of the pictures below were taken on a morning ride on July 14, 2002. Yes, I always carry my cell phone with me -- luckily I haven't been in an emergency severe enough to use it.
