Tinkering With Wood

By most accounts, my most consuming hobby is woodworking. There's something about the natural patterns in the grains of the wood, and the ability to shape it into anything you want.

  • Obviously, my woodworking abilities have come a long way from gluing scraps together after Mom finished a home improvement project. I certainly hope it has. However, there is still much room for improvement.

I try not to use screws and nails. In big pieces of furniture, that isn't always practical, but in lighter furniture, some toys and other projects, dowel pegs are preferable. In fact, many of my pieces have no nails or screws. In many ways, it poses an interesting challenge to me.

Below are some examples of what I've done.

    Toys

Yes, I'm a kid at heart, so much of my woodworking is for little toys. I've tried selling them online, but that didn't work (oh, there were a few orders, but it wasn't enough to justify its existence). Instead, I typically make toys for friends (or myself!).

    Furniture

Yep, I also made my own furniture. The reason: I can never find exactly the type of furniture that I want in the deparment stores (particularly my bed and entertainment center. So I made my own. I'm told it's not too bad, but I always see flaws (we are our own worst critics).

    Refinishing Furniture

I don't refinish furniture too often, but it does happen. Below is an example of a desk I refinished. If you really want to know more about the desk and the processes involved in restoring it, e-mail me.
