Henri Cartier-Bresson

Born outside Paris in 1908, he is regarded as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.  Bresson became a trailblazer, photographing the homeless and the poor in France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Spain.

Bernd and Hilla Becher

The two artists first collaborated in 1959 and married in 1961.  They began working as freelance photographers, concentrating on industrial photography.  In 1991, the artists won the Leone d'oro award for sculpture.  The Bechers are best known for the typologies of industrial forms. The typologies have an emotional distance that leads viewers to focus on the formal details of the structures instead of thinking through the work in a narrative manner.

Richard Peter

War time photographer known best for his "Angel Above the City" image as well as other photographs depicting the devastation of the city of Dresen after the war.

Eugene Atget

A self taught photographer, who began his photography work at the age of 41.  He is one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century.  Atget photographed more than 10,000 images of the people and sights of the French capitol, but it was not until after his death in 1927 that he received proper recognition for his work.
