Weekend Highlights -- WHITE

Week 2: September 20, 2009

WHITE RALLIES TO A SCORELESS TIE AGAINST MCLN MPS 96 CHALLENGERS

After a tough season opener, White bounced back with a much more organized attack against MCLN MPS 96 Challengers. The first half was largely a defensive battle for White. Gutsy work from the defense, especially Anna and Olivia kept the Challengers offense at bay. Goalkeeper Brianna performed brilliantly for a second week in a row with some beautiful saves.  White’s offense came alive in the second half.  However, a number of good runs and combination passes among Georgia, Caroline, Kelly and Keia were unable to penetrate the Challengers defense.  The game ended with a scoreless tie, but White would definitely feel redeemed from last week’s performance.

Week 1: September 13, 2009

WHITE LOSES SEASON OPENER 0-3

On Sunday, September 13, 2009 Wildcats White journeyed to Marshall, VA to take on a formidable FCSC Blackwatch for its season opener. Though the weather was great and the countryside drive was pleasant, the outcome of the game was not. White was downed 0-3 to Blackwatch.  However, it was an opportunity for the team to get an early glimpse of the level of play needed to triumph in ODSL Division 1.

White appeared nervous at the start and the short passing game they executed so well during the Patriot Cup was missing.  Blackwatch kept them on the defense for most of the first half. Anna, Maddie, Emily and Jamie were solid in defense.  A number of great saves by Brianna resulted in both teams being scoreless at the end of the first half.   The second half saw a continuation of Blackwatch’s offensive attack and on 3 occasions they were able to penetrate White’s defense to score, tarnishing an otherwise brilliant goalkeeping performance.

Highlight Archives -- WHITE

Blue and White First in Their Divisions, Gold Second

With the season finally over on June 20, White sealed the deal on a fantastic season to clinch first place in ODSL D2.
  • WHITE: In its final match away in Warrenton, White started slowly but finally shut out the Mustangs 5-0, with Maddie having her second hat trick of the season and Shanquelle and Keia knocking in one apiece. With the win, in its second season as a team, this hard-working group captured first place in ODSL D2 with an UNDEFEATED season. What an accomplishment! Congrats to the 13 players and Coach Bob for a fabulous season.
  • BLUE: Away at Duff Park to face the friendly but feisty SASA Fusion White in its final match of the season, Blue controlled possession and four different players knocked in goals -- Jessica, Gillian, Sarah, and Charlotte -- for the season-ending victory. Together, Hannah, Kaitlyn, and Cookie kept a clean goal and preserved the shut-out. Blue ended its season 7-1-1, with 31 goals for and 11 against. Way to go, Blue!
  • GOLD: With other games complete, Gold -- who lost only one match all season, and that one only by a goal -- landed a solid second in its division, with the one narrow loss to the division winner! Fantastic job, Gold!
The overall Academy record for Spring 2009 is 20-2-5 (92 goals for, 31 against). We all are very proud of these 37 players, who have worked very hard this past year, for their effort and achievement, and everyone is looking forward to a very promising transition to 11v11 in the fall.

WAY TO GO, WILDCATS!

June 2009 --

Weeks 7/8/9: June, 2009

White Caps Off a Championship Winning Season in Style

June has been a frustrating month for White.  A number of weather-related game postponements and a few close games delayed their championship celebrations.  However, White was not to be daunted by the stormy weather that accompanied them on their journey to Warrenton on Saturday June 20, 2009. They knew they had a job to complete; a win puts them atop the ODSL Division 2 table.  After a slow start, on a soggy outfield, the girls began to show their form.  At about the 15th minute of the game Maddie was able to break through the Warrenton Mustang defenders to give white its first goal.  She quickly followed with a second goal and minutes before the end of the first half, Shanquelle delivered a well executed long-range shot the rocketed past the keeper to put White up 3-0 at the half.

White continued its goal fest in the second half.  Maddie who has been the main goal scorer all season added her 3rd goal to put the score up 4-0.  Goal number 5 came when Keia, after breaking through the defenders on 3 occasions, finally managed to elude the keeper to give White an emphatic 5-0 win, and capping off an undefeated 6-2-0 season.

Earlier June encounters resulted in a 3-2 win for White in a thriller against 2nd place Vista Explosion on June 7. It was Maddie’s hat-trick that did the trick.  Her final-minute go-head goal sank all hopes for Vista.  On June 13, White held on to a 1-1 tie against PAC 96 Blue Heat much to the chagrin of the Vista coach.  Brianna was the lone goal scorer for White who had difficulty maneuvering a very rugged field and could not get its passing game executed.

All in all, a very exciting season for White.  The players grew in confidence and skill as the season progressed. Parents and fans grew to enjoy and appreciate good soccer.  Well done players and coach!!

May 2009 --

Solid Academy Showing At Virginian

Whitecats

All three teams participated in the Virginian over Memorial Day weekend, with Blue and Gold playing 11v11 and White in the 8v8. Overall, the Academy had a solid and promising showing, with the following highlights:

  • In 8v8 play in the Bronze Division, White went three for four, with 10 goals for and just 4 against, including a hard-fought 1-0 victory versus the ODSL D1 team Loudoun White (a game in which Shan took one for the team and ended up with stitches). What a great showing for this hard-working group!
  • Gold, in 11v11 play in the Silver Division, started out with a strong Saturday of 8 goals for and 0 against...an unlucky Sunday morning in which, despite tremendous effort and a clear victory in possession time, the net proved elusive kept them out of the semi-finals. Thank you to Kyler and Isabelle for your help!
  • For Blue in 11v11 play in the Gold Division, a strong start on Saturday with 2-1 and 3-0 wins provided momentum into a tough match against WAGS D1 MSC Elite, a closer match than the score suggests, with both teams creating opportunities. Emotionally and physically drained, Blue still had hope for a Wildcard semi-final berth through a PK shoot-out, but it was not meant to be. Thank you to Meg, Allie, and Colleen for your help!

Week 5: May 16-17, 2009: White Tops ASC Lightning 4-0

On Saturday, White, exuding confidence after previous weeks wins, journeyed to Bles park in Ashburn to take on ASC Lightning.  It was a cloud-covered, slightly breezy morning, and conditions were great for soccer.  White started the game slowly, tapping the ball around, and exhibiting good ball control.  A number of shot opportunities were created for White, and by the end of the first half, Maddie had made good of 2 of her shots.  The first half was defined by solid defensive play and good short passing, but players were unable to finish with conviction.

White continued its dominating play during the second half and within 4 minutes of the half Maddie was able to complete her hat-trick with a good left footer that sailed passed the outstretched hands of the keeper and found the back of the nets.  Goal number 4 came when a cross from Morgan found Laura who punched it into the back of the nets.  White was dominating throughout the game.  I counted only 4 touched by White’s keepers all game, a testament to the solid defensive and midfield play.  White ended with a 4-0 win.  Game 2, on Sunday, against PAC 98 Blue Heat was cancelled due to a rain-soaked pitch.

Week 4: May 11, 2009 -- White Gives Moms Mother’s Day Present

It was Sunday; not an ordinary Sunday. It was Mothers Day; a gorgeous 70-degree day with clear blue skies and a light breeze; a perfect day for soccer.  White strolled on to its home turf at Stafford Park bent on delivering a Mother’s Day present to moms and indeed they did with a 5-2 trouncing of Culpepper Comets 96G.

Just 8 minutes into the game, a free kick from Abby, from about 20 yards out, was well received by Shanquelle whose left-footer found the back of the nets for goal number 1.  White kept up the pressure throughout the first half with good ball distribution.  We saw a number of good give-and-goes between Hannah-Maddie and Kelly-Maddie that resulted in shot opportunities.  A breakaway run from midfield by Maddie resulted in a shot that went just wide right.  Goal number 2 came when a series of passes between Hannah, Keia and Maddie caught the Comets defense out of position and Maddie’s shot eluded the outstretched hands of the keeper.  Goal number 3 came when a short corner kick from Abby to Maddie pulled the defense out of the goal area. Morgan who was left wide open in front of goal was able to convert a pass from Maddie.  The Comets exhibited good ball distribution throughout the half and threatened on a number of occasions, but a number of good keeping decisions and good saves by Anna prevented them from finding the nets.  It was late in the first half that a defensive breakdown by White resulted in the Comets first goal.  White ended the half with a 3-1 lead.

White picked up from where they left off before the half-time break.  Three minutes into the second half, goal number 4 came when a beautiful left-footer from Shanquelle from about 22 yards out was too much for the Comets keeper to handle.  The Comets responded swiftly with a breakaway run that eluded keeper Keia giving them goal number 2.  However, White was bent on pleasing the moms and fans and kept up a blistering offensive attack.  Laura had a number of great runs up the left flank and on 4 occasions had great shot opportunities that went just wide or were well saved by the keeper.  The icing on the game came when a midfield breakaway run from Maddie and an early shot on goal eluded an advancing keeper for goal number 5.

White’s defense was awesome throughout the game.  Nikki, Anna, Morgan and Shanquelle made life difficult for the Comets offense.  Shanquelle was particularly zippy as sweeper and frustrated not only the Comets players but an extremely animated and agitated Comets fan-base.  Shanquelle was clearly my player of the game with her aggressive defensive play, timely backfield runs, and her 2 goals.  Abby is also mastering her corner kicks and as White improves its heading capability, the team will be a force to be reckoned with during set plays.  A well deserved 5-2 win for White and a great Mothers Day present.

White Wins over Arlington Dynamo in 3-2 Thriller

On Sunday May 3, White strolled on to a rain-soaked Stafford Park turf field to take on a formidable Arlington Dynamo. White threatened early with a number of good attacks up the left flank.  In the first minute of the game a left footer from Maddie went just wide left; a well timed run from Brianna resulted in a spectacular save from the Dynamo keeper; good crosses from Kelly, Morgan, and Keia resulted in a plethora of shot opportunities for White. Although White controlled the possession for most of the first half, Dynamo exhibited good ball control and ball distribution.  Defensive breakdowns gave Dynamo 2 uncontested shots on goal that they were able to punch into the back of the nets.  A dejected White ended the first 2 goals down.

Second-half readjustments and a pep-talk from Coach Bob resulted in a rejuvenated White. Within the first minute a breakaway run and shot from Maddie resulted in White’s first goal.  Other opportunities for White came in quick succession. A free kick from Shanquelle from 20 yards out went just wide right; a corner kick from Abby that landed on Keia’s foot sailed over the crossbar; a long shot from Morgan resulted in a great save by the Dynamo keeper.  The 2-2 tying goal came when a shot from Maddie ricocheted off the keeper and Anna was there to punch it in with a spectacular left footer.  Late in the game, a thru-ball from Abby resulted in a run Maddie whose shot careened into the back of the nets, but the screaming parents and fans were quickly deflated when the go-ahead goal was disallowed by an offside call.  However, Maddie was not to be denied, and minutes later, a similar run, this time well onside, resulted in a shot that ricocheted off the head of an advancing dynamo keeper and she was able to calmly tap it into an open net for the 3-2 go-ahead goal.  Maddie was clearly the player of the game.

Three weeks into the season, White has begun to show signs of jelling as a team. The defense and midfield have been solid as evidenced by White’s time of possession in its attacking half of the field.  The passing and timing of runs are also improving and the offense has been taking bigger and bigger shots on goal. Way to go Wildcats White!

April 2009 --

White Downs CCS Orange Crush 3-1

On a hot near record 90 degree day in April, White took the  90 minute trek to Berryville to take on the CCS Orange Crush.   Good ball distribution created a number of first-half opportunities for  White’s offense.  In the 20th minute Laura  received a pass from Maddie but, her shot ricocheted off the left  post.  White continued the offensive pressure and in the  29th minute the Orange Crush keeper bobbled a shot from  Maddie that trickled into the back of the nets.   Although White ended the first half with a 1-0 lead, they were unable  to make the most of their good fortunes.  Even the goal  scored in the first half came from a defensive mistake.

White began the second half still in control.   At times its ball control was a bit suspect and the 90 degree heat  resulted in signs of lethargy but, White continued its offensive blitz, thanks  to some great defensive and midfield support.  Goal number 2  came from a right wing cross from Hannah who found a well positioned  Brianna who found the back of the nets from 9 yards out.   Orange Crush quickly countered with a goal of their own when a shot  from 22 yards out careened passed the outstretched hands of keeper  Lora.  Late in the game, sweet redemption came for  Keia, who had a number of shots on goal, when she took on the Orange  Crush defense with a midfield run and her right footer from 12 yards out found  the back of the nets.  That sealed the game for White who  came away with a 3-1 victory and a 2-1-0 record in tournament play.

White Score Nine Goals in Opening  Weekend

White began their season opener against the formidable  Chantilly Panthers 96 Red.  They dominated the game  throughout with lots of shots on goal and a number of missed  opportunities.  Despite aggressive play, the game ended in a  2-2 tie.

On Sunday, White took on the LFC Xplosion on their  Stafford  Park home field. Ten  minutes into the game Maddie found the back of the nets with a left  footer from 18 yards out.  Goal number 2 came when  Lora zipped up the right flank and found the right upper corner with a  beauty.  Maddie followed shortly with a midfield run  and banked in goal number 3.  White kept up the pressure  with a plethora of shots that kept the Xplosion keeper very busy.   Goal number 4 came when a corner kick from Morgan was nicely  received in a crowded goal area by Hannah who had the presence of mind  to pass it back out to Shanquelle who scored from 20 yards out.

The second half continued with great overall play from  White.  The defense and midfield made it easy for keepers  Abby and Keia.  The fifth and sixth goals  resulted from almost identical breakaways by Brianna who used great  poise to elude an advancing Xplosion keeper.  After an  number of good runs up the right flank by Laura that were nicely saved  by the keeper, goal number 7 came from her shot that ricocheted off the right  post, but Anna was there to make the completion.  It  was at that point that coach Bob instructed the team to shut down the  offense and work on their passing skills.  The result was an  emphatic 7-0 win by White.

Despite the rainy weekend, the Academy was able to get in 9 of the 12 scheduled FPYC Liberty Cup Invitational matches, all played on turf. In the end, the 37 Academy members (and one guest) showed their familes that all their hard work, dedication, and determination is paying off.

Highlight Archives -- WHITE

November 2008 --

Both Gold and White ended their seasons on a high note, with each team playing very well in their end-of-season tourneys: Gold narrowly missed out on the finals in the Bethesda Thanksgiving Tourney, and White secured a semi-finalist berth in the FCSC Hunt Country tourney.

First, on an absolutely frigid weekend in Maryland over the November 15 weekend, Gold continued its solid season with a second place finish in its flight -- over two very strong teams, the Great Falls Real Force and Herndon Heat -- in the Patriot Division at the Bethesda Tourney, falling only to eventual finalist MSC Magic in the final minutes on Sunday morning (yes, our toes were numb!). With 10 goals for and 6 against, and facing very strong competition, the 12 Gold players had a weekend of which parents, fans, and the players themselves should be very proud.

Second, the following weekend (equally cold!), the 13 White players traveled to the FCSC Hunt Country tourney and, in their first early morning game, faced the D1 ODSL home team for a challenging match. Despite a valiant effort, White was unable to take the 3 points, but made up for it in its noontime match with a shut-out against the LFC Raiders to secure a berth in the semi-finals on Sunday. Facing the SYA Inferno WAGS team, White knew it would be a tough match and did not make it easy for the eventual finalist, keeping the score to 1-2 at the end.

Way to go, Wildcats!

October 2008 --

Wildcats White Continues its Winning Ways

Under mild weather conditions the 4-1 White took on the 1-4 BAC Hurricanes, taking nothing for granted.  Good ball distribution created an early opportunity for Maddie who punched in the first goal in 3rd minute of play.  The second goal for White came in the 17th minute when a series of short passes from Morgan, Hannah and Laura found Maddie who was well positioned to finish it off with a good left footer. It was not long after that Maddie was able to make a good run from midfield up the left flank to finish off her hat trick and give White its 3rd goal.  BAC Hurricanes threatened late in the first half with a breakaway run up the middle, but a speedy Nikki, whose defensive effort was outstanding all game, was able to track down the player and deny Hurricanes a shot opportunity.  The Hurricanes’ shot opportunity finally came in the waning seconds of the first half, only to be denied again by a great save from goal keeper Brianna.  White ended the first half with a 3-0 lead.

White tacked on 2 more goals (Keia and Kelly) in the second half.  We saw a number of good crosses from Lora and Laura, Gutsy defensive stops from Nikki, Abby, Shanquelle and Emily and solid midfield support from Anna.  Overall, White had a balanced attack throughout with solid contributions from all the players.  It was well deserved 5-0 victory.

Wildcats White Wins 1-0 in Close Encounter against SYC Thunder White

On a cold Sunday morning, White heated up the Franconia Park pitch with some aggressive first-half play against SYC Thunder.  White unleashed a barrage of shots on goal with Morgan, Maddie, Kelly, Keia, and Lora all having shot opportunities.  Time and time again parents and fans were pumped up with White’s impressive attack, only to be deflated by shots that went just wide of the goal or were saved by the SYC goal keeper.  White’s midfield and defense provided solid and steady support, preventing keeper Abby from seeing any first-half activity.  By the end of the first half, White, with more than 12 shots on goal, had clearly outplayed SYC Thunder, but the 0-0 score was no reflection of this performance.SYC Thunder began the second half with attacking play. It was evident that they benefited from their half-time pep talk.  Within the first 10 minutes, roles were reversed and it was White that was on the defense trying to stave off SYC’s shots on goal.  Late in the second half, White regained its composure and in the final minutes of the game a great breakaway run by Maddie resulted in a shot on goal that eluded the outstretched hands of the keeper to put White up 1-0.  Lora followed shortly thereafter with a breakaway run of her own and a shot that rocketed off the goal post and recovered by SYC Thunder, but before they could mount any further offense, time elapsed and the final whistle sounded.

White Loses to Top Ranked Vienna Bulldogs

On a glorious 70 degree day with clear blue skies and a perfect setting for soccer at the Draper Park Stadium, White faced its toughest opponent for the season thus far.  The game started slowly with the defense for both teams controlling the flow of the game.  It was not until the 18th minute of the game that White had its first real chance of scoring.  The Bulldogs attempt at clearing a ball from their penalty area was miscued and Maddie, receiving a volley from 22 yards out, unleashed a shot on goal that just sailed over the nets.  White kept up the pressure when a short corner kick from Keia to Shanquelle careened off the goal post and was recovered by the Bulldog defense. The goal post became a friend of the Bulldog’s and an enemy of White.  Shanquelle’s run from the backfield eluded the entire defense, including the keeper, but her attempted tap-in hit the goal post and the keeper was able to recover.  Shots from White (Morgan, Maddie, and Kelley) would ricochet off the goal post 3 more times throughout the game.

The Bulldog’s offense had some very good runs as well and it was in the 31st minute of the game that they were able to penetrate White’s defense and score their first goal.  Their second goal came in the 10th minute of the
