Why Oppose the AMLP?

OUR RESPONSE TO THE AMLP-

The AMLP claims that the only way to solve problems is for government to interfere in our lives and force us to adhere to their definition of solutions. Our party utterly rejects that idea.

The AMLP brazenly touts collectivism over individual rights. We believe that this is a dangerous idea and are fully opposed to it.

The AMLP has claimed that without a massive socialist Council “the rich will only get richer, and the poor will only get poorer.” We reject this LIE completely. The truth is that this is nothing more than class warfare being promoted to scare citizens into voting for candidates who will promise anything to gain power. We believe that players should advance based on their hard work. We believe that wealth and advancement is the reward that players gain for time played. If someone is dedicated and becomes rich because of it they should not be demonized.

The AMLP has stated that “the rich should help [i.e. be forced by government] the poor.” This implies that the rich are not currently helping the poor. This is yet another LIE from the AMLP. The TRUTH is that the rich have been OVERWHELMINGLY generous without the Council forcing them to do so. I personally can attest to the generosity of rich players because during times of distress, or times when I have been killed, wealthy players have voluntarily offered me money and assistance. There are even clubs run by groups of rich players designed to help other players. The idea that the rich are a sinister force that is somehow harming the poor is utter nonsense.

THE 5 DANGERS OF LABOUR PARTY RULE

1. At this point you may be wondering what harm could come of having the Labour Party in charge. Well, let us tell you, the AMLP isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Firstly, the AM Labour Party is not interested in providing a representative form of government. They openly state in their manifesto and club description that “Working together in such a way will help us realize our true potential and produce a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the majority, rather then a minority.” Sounds good, right? Well, lets examine this a little closer. The AMLP wants our city to be governed on the principle of Majority rule. This is not at all a representative government. It is a form of tyranny. Mob rule, if you will. In order to have a truly representative form of government, the rights and privileges of the minority must be preserved. The minority must have a voice, not be dictated to by the majority.

2. The second danger that Labour Party rule presents is the method by which they seek to achieve their goals. In order to create their majority rule system, they have created a political party. It is designed, quite simply, to act as a political machine to crush opposition. Currently the AMLP is the most organized and viable political organization in AM. They have gathered member rolls, funds, and citizen databases which they have used to try and steamroll independent candidates through organized party-line voting. Sadly, the only reasonable counter to this strategy is to create a party to oppose them. Not a party to impose a repressive agenda, but a party to preserve our freedom. We, the DFP, are fighting fire with fire.

3. The third danger that Labour Party rule presents is nearly as bad as the first two dangers combined. The policies of the AMLP are anti-capitalist. If implemented, the tax hikes and complicated regulations which they seek to impose will cripple the AM economy. Our businesses and real estate will become so taxed and regulated that it will take all the fun out of owning and using them. If you are a business owner or a property owner, you need to wake up and realize that Labour Party policies are an ATTACK ON YOU. Let me repeat this. If the Labour Party is able to implement their agenda, you, the private citizen, the man or woman who has worked hard to buy, own, and operate your business and real estate will be under ATTACK. Don’t be fooled by their smooth talk and fuzzy proposals, fight the attack by voting against the AMLP.

4. The fourth danger presented by Labour Party rule is their foreign policy. The AMLP cannot be trusted in dealing with foreign entities, specifically, the evil empire known as Klatch. Why? Because the leadership of the Labour Party has dangerous ties to Klatch. Lets start with “Der Leader” of the AMLP, Calagan. This Thief, who was born in AM, ran away from his home and fled to Klatch as a young man. Years later, he returned “a changed man.” Once back in AM, Der Leader Calagan, decided to stay so he could buy property in our fair city. He also took an interest in politics, and he states in his biography that he “has spent a lot of his time and effort promoting and expanding the club through various mediums while attempting to build closer ties with officials in Djelibeybi.” The AMLP, under Calagan’s rule, has also stated it’s goal as “deepening the working relationship” between the AM and Klatch Councils. The AMLP has also stated it wants to try and have the AM and Klatch Councils pass “similar legislation” around the “same time.” Similar legislation? Like nationalizing all the banks and shops perhaps?

This brings me to the other leaders in the AMLP. Their Deputy Leader, Abhishek, also a Thief, makes it clear that he was “impressed by the Djelian council and laws” and decided to work with Calagan to establish a party with “similar ideas.” Their Treasurer is no better, this man, who they call “Spontiff,” has openly stated his loyalty to Klatch. In his biography, he states that “returning home to the squalor of Morpork awoke in him a deep sense of social justice (a communist term) and a love of the underdog. Upon hearing that the Klatchian government had infiltrated Morporkian society, he quickly sought out what he believed, to be its front.”

It is overwhelmingly clear that the AMLP wants to impose a Klatchian-style Socialist Dictatorship in AM. Most assuredly I say to you, reject this with all your heart! Say no to the Klatchian Slave System!

5. The final danger of AMLP rule is that if they were to implement everything they wanted, Ankh-Morpork would quickly become a welfare state. Individual initiative would fall under attack and be replaced by a massive and expensive bureaucracy. Hard work would be replaced by handouts, and players would slowly abandon our city in search of opportunities else ware.

“COUNCIL FUNDED PROJECTS” (aka entitlement programs)-

As was stated in the opening of this document, we believe that the best way to encourage prosperity is for the council to stay out of players lives and wallets. We believe that hard work, dedication, and charity are the best ways for players to achieve a higher standard of living on the disc.

When other parties talk about “Council funded projects” what they are really talking about is ways to redistribute wealth. What they are talking about is ways to take your hard earned cash and give it out to whoever they see fit. This does not “enrich the lives of players,” it creates obstacles to progress. What’s worse is that the AMLP is only willing to tell us SOME of the projects they want to spend your money on. Aside from these ideas, they will only admit that they want to spend your money. Period. We find this appalling.

Players on the disc should not receive any handouts from the council. We especially believe that younger players should not receive GOVERNMENT assistance when getting started. Let us make it overwhelmingly clear that we encourage private citizens and private organizations to help newbies. We simply believe that government should not be the ones doing the helping. For more than a decade players on the disc have worked their way up from poor, unskilled, newbies to wealthy, skilled, veterans. They have earned everything they have without the help of a Council. We believe it is insulting to past players who have advanced the hard way, without government aid, to suddenly give such aid to newbies. Furthermore, we believe that such aid breeds dependence and laziness, which benefits no one.

ADVERTISING

We are fully opposed to the insane wastes of money proposed by the AMLP. These wastes include the AMLP proposals to spend “council funds” (aka Citizen’s Tax Dollars) on advertising in newspapers, town crier announcements, and “get out the vote” efforts. We believe that citizens are smart enough to learn about changes and elections without spending loads of taxpayer cash.

THE CITIZEN COMMITTEE

The DFP is fully opposed to the AMLP idea of having a citizen committee to provide oversight for the magistrates. We believe that the AMLP proposal is, to put it mildly, grossly incompetent. They propose having magistrates personally appoint the members of the Citizen Committee that is supposed to prevent magistrates from abusing their powers. We believe this creates a serious conflict of interest. By having the magistrates appoint their own overseers the entire Citizen Committee is immediately rendered untrustworthy. There is no independence or accountability.

The only Citizen Committee that the DFP would support would be one which is totally independent of the government. It must be privately owned, privately organized, and privately funded. This way, impartiality can be maintained.

SUPPORTING “BENEFICIAL” CLUBS

The DFP is opposed to having the council provide any kind of aid or support to any club. We believe that to do this is a form of discrimination. Should this proposal ever go into effect, Magistrates would arbitrarily decide what clubs are “beneficial” and what clubs aren’t. As a result, they will simply award tax dollar grants to the clubs that they personally feel are beneficial.

The fact is that there are many beneficial clubs on the disc today and they are operating just fine without the Council throwing citizen’s money at them.

INCORPORATING THE AMCW

We are fully OPPOSED to incorporating the AMCW. We believe it functions fine without being forced to join with the government.

CITY HEALTH SERVICE

The DFP is fully OPPOSED to the CHS proposed by the AMLP. We believe this is an utterly insane proposal! Firstly, the Labour Party cannot even give a decent estimate of the cost of this program because they can only try to guess how many people will actually participate in it should it be enacted. Secondly, they provide an astoundingly poor prediction of a cost ranging from a ridiculous 10,000 dollars to a ludicrous 22,000! Should more people than expected apply for the CHS, the cost could shoot up past 40,000. Thirdly, there is no control mechanism to keep tea prices low. If the Council commits to pay for tea, then the price of tea will go up, up, UP! Finally, this is just another giveaway to players who really don’t need handouts! If this happens, what can be said to all those players who advanced the hard way? All those players who took risks, worked hard to earn money to buy tea, and overcame obstacles without government aid? The DFP believes that the CHS is an insult to all players past and present.

MORPORKIAN INTELLIGENCE AGENCY

The DFP is OPPOSED to the creation of a taxpayer funded MIA. We believe that private citizens, or in the case of Military/Covert Operations, “Patriots,” should be encouraged to act in accordance with their own nationalistic intuitions against enemies of AM. This way, any required operations may be carried out cost free and without official Council fingerprints.

SHAREHOLDER LAW

The DFP is fully OPPOSED to the “Shareholder Law” which the AMLP proposed recently. We believe that this proposal is needlessly complex, promotes high prices for consumers, low profits for businesses, and will be a regulatory nightmare for the Council.

WHOLESALE LAW

The DFP is OPPOSED to any wholesaling law. We believe that consumers should be able to buy and sell goods as they wish.
