The Southern Paiute Powwow is held each year around the Memorial Day weekend. We decided to go for a Saturday afternoon. One of the Southern Paiute reservations is north of Las Vegas by about 45 minutes. It is at Snow Mountain. We arrived at about noon, before the dancing started. So we had lunch - Navajo tacos and fry bread. Quite tasty and filling.

Then the dancing began. There were costumes of all colors and styles. One thing that impressed me was the way contemporary cultural items were assimilated into danceer's costumes. One youth wore a "Cat in the Hat" hat. Another had mirrors/reflectors that were, at closer glance, music CDs. A child's costume used the Ninja Turtles as a theme. Other costumes were much more traditional.

The crafts/books/clothing that were for sale were generally of good quality. The biggest problem with the whole day was the Las Vegas spring weather. While it had been over 100 degrees several days earlier, a cold fromt blew through. This spring has been very windy. This day was windy and almost cold at the 3000 foot elevation.
