THE FROHOCK FAMILY:

The Frohock name is unique and, therefore, easy to trace. We believe that all Frohocks in the United States originated from one of two Families.  One Family lived near Gilmanton N.H. and migrated to Maine, settling around Lincolnville Beach.  This Maine Family apparently began with Thomas Frohock, of England.  But that Family is not directly related to the Frohocks who migrated to Gallatin County, IL in the last half of the 1800's.

The other Family of Frohocks are what we shall call the Illinois Family.  Our line of descent is through John Frohock, Sr. who arrived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania between 1720 and 1730. Research has located Frohocks in England as far back as 1605 when Marmaduke Frohock matriculated at Magdalen(Cambridge).  Thomas Frohock matriculated at Oxford about 1635.  A Frohock was Alderman in Cambridgeshire in 1688 and a Frohock was mayor of Cambridgeshire in 1703.

John Frohock, Sr. is our oldest known ancestor.  His birth date is unknown but was probably before 1700.  He lived in Dorchester, England and emigrated to the new world with his four sons, John, Jr., Thomas, William and Hugh.  His wife was most likely dead at the time because we find little reference-to her.  However, she is believed to be the sister to Thomas and Hugh Parker who emigrated with the Frohocks.  The Will of John, Sr. mentioned his sisters in England, one of which was married to Robert Parker.   The Frohocks were probably of good education and some wealth because they immediately linked with prominent people in the new world, and John Sr. was in local politics in Bristol, Pa.

The story of John Frohock, Sr. is told in the Bristol, Pa public library. Read the History and minutes of the Bristol Borough, the abstracts of Wills of Bucks County, PA(1635-1793), and the Bucks County Tax Records, etc.

Thomas Parker died in 1742.  John Frohock, Sr. died in 1748 and Hugh Parker died in 1751.  With their parents dead, the Parker and Frohock boys(probably cousins) migrated to North Carolina to make their fortune in land.  The book CAROLINA CRADLE, by Robert W Ramsey is a required reading for any serious student of Frohock history.   Reference notes in that book will provide many other pertinent readings.  We obtained most of our information from the Public Libraries at Bristol, Pa and Salisbury, N. C.  However, much of the data can be obtained through the Illinois Public Library System,

John Frohock, Jr. became one of the wealthiest men in North Carolina at that time, but he never married.  His brother William Frohock resided in Halifax County, N.C., married and had at least one daughter, but we found no other Frohock descendants.   Nothing was found on Hugh Frohock's progeny, and it is from Thomas that the Frohock name has been perpetuated.

It was Thomas A Frohock, son of Alexander F, grandson of Thomas F, and great grandson of John Frohock, Sr. who migrated to Tennessee and there married Sarah A Ballenger in Sparta, TN on February 10,1828.  We found no trace of the family wealth.  Thomas A and Sarah A (Ballenger) Frohock reputedly had 7 sons and 7 daughters.  They moved to Kentucky in the 1850's.  It was sad to learn that on October 21, 1857 Sarah A Frohock died in Livingston CO, KY of pneumonia. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Ballenger. She was born in Culpepper CO, VA and reared near Salem.

The 1860 Census locates the Thomas A Frohock family for us in nearby Crittendon CO, KY. TAF is a tenant farmer.  We find 6 sons and 4 daughters.  During the next few years all six of the sons and one daughter moved to Eagle Creek Township of Gallatin CO, IL.  Two daughters married in KY and presumably stayed there.  We lost record of one daughter.  We can only speculate on what happened to the other four siblings.   However, we have found no further evidence of Thomas A Frohock, Perhaps he decided not to leave his beloved Sarah A.  Perhaps he died in the 1860's, thereby releasing the family to move on to the great farmlands in Illinois.  Read THE FROHOCK SEVEN for the story of who went to the Promised Land.  Further research has added THE FROHOCK EIGHT(8).

Thomas Jefferson Frohock (1841-1908) son of Thomas A and Sarah is our ancestor.   He married Mary S Stricklin (1849-~889) and they are buried in Leavell Hill Cemetery, Gallatin County, IL with a very nice tombstone easy for anyone to find, and one of the nicest stones there of 1908 vintage.  Records indicate that Mary S died at age 40 due to complications of childbirth.

FROHOCK FAMILY IN TENNESSEE

We thank Mary Dixon for discovering that Thomas A. Frohock married Sarah Ballanger in Spartal White CO, TN on Feb 10, 1828 and they lived in Smith CO, TN.  Thomas A. was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Long) Frohock.  The Frohocks lived in Rowan County, NC when Thomas A. was born.

Our first indication of a Frohock in TN was from the National Banner & Nashville Advertiser(Mon Sept 17, 1832):

"Frohock, Miss Mary M. married to Mr William C. Hazen" This could not have been the daughter of Thomas A. and we can only speculate on her ancestors.

The next record is from the Smith County,TN Deed Book M 1800-1835 "Thomas Frohick to Samuel Harrison a tobacco crop March 6, 1835"  Now that we know that TAF is in Smith County, TN, this is most likely him.

The 1840 Census-Tennessee shows:

Frohic(3) Thomas A SM258 130001-10101 (The interpretation of this is: SM=Smith County and the family is:

Ages 0-5 1 male 1 female 5-10 3 males O females 10-15 O males 1 female 20-30 O male 1 female 30-40 1 male O female

Frohock, EM T 246 0-00020001

(The interpretation of this is: T=Tipton County and the family is: There are no males. 2 females ages 15-20 and 1 female age 50-60. Again, we could only speculate on this. Tipton CO is north of Memphis and Smith County is NE of Nashville.

The 1850 Census was the first Census to give family names and they are:

Trahawk, Thomas A B ca. 1805 Rowan,NC (must be our Thomas)

Sarah B ca 1810-13 Culpepper,VA Mary B 1829 TN (m William Minetree in KY.) Alexander B 1830 TN William J B ca 1832 TN (mar. Mary Ann Smith June 5, 1878, Shawneetown, IL.) Sarah E B 1835 TN (Sarah Elizabeth, B Jan 12, 1835) or ( Dec 18, 1835) Leanidus B 1835 TN Smith Co, TN John S B ca 1837 TN Smith Co, TN Thomas J B 1841 TN Smith Co, TN on 28 Feb 1841 Harrriet B ca 1841 TN Smith Co, TN

Lucius B Virginia B

1846 TN Smith Co, TN 1849 TN Smith Co, TN

(This information was gathered by Mary Dixon with small additions obtained from the Church of Latter-day Saints. David Franklin and Lucy had not yet been'~orn. All of those mentioned in the 1850 Census reached KY except Leanidus and ~B~rginia.

THE FROHOCKS IN KENTUCKY

We know that it was Thomas A Frohock who was destined to bring the Frohock name from North Carolina to Southern Illinois.  Thomas A was born in 1805 in Rohan County, N C to Alexander Frohock and Elizabeth Montfort (Long) Frohock.  Upon reaching manhood, Thomas A started west. It was in Sparta, TN that he married Sarah Ballenger on February 10, 1828. Sarah was born in 1810 (or 1813) in Culpepper County, Va.  Yes, the world was on the move in those days.  Always westward!

We lose contact with the Frohocks for a few years, but we find that 7 sons and 7 daughters were born to Thomas A and Sarah in Tennessee.  Then the family moved to Kentucky. The first article that we found on their whereabouts was a sad one.  It was simply stated as follows:

LIVINGSTON CO., KY VITAL STATISTICS DEATH RECORDS 1852-1907 Frohock, Sarah A wh. fern. farmers wife, 45 yrs 11 mos 21 days. 21 Oct 1857 of pneumonia. parents: James & Elizabeth Ballenger. reared near Salem, b Culpepper Co., Va. Dr Linley & Dr Greer.

The Frohock family must have been shocked and disoriented and for a while lost their vision of Illinois.  However, life must go on for the remainder.  The next event appears as follows:

CRITTENDEN CO KY Births, Deaths 1842-1865 Frohock, John S - Mahala Nations(later spelled Nation), 4 March 1858 Groom age 29 lives in Livingston CO, KY, born in TN. Bride age 21, maiden, born Coffee CO, TN. Mahala's parents were John and Reny Nation.  That family is in the Wilson County Census of KY for 1850.  They moved to Crittenden CO after 1850.  See Crittenden CO KY published by Riverbend Publishing Co., Marion, KY.

The next article is from the LIVINGSTON CO., KY Marriages 1839-1871 William Minetree m Miss Mary Elizabeth Frowhawk (little doubt in my mind that she is a Frohock) Jan 6, 1859.   Groom 34. Bride age 30 and born in Bedford CO TN. Richard Lloyd witness.  Mary E is the oldest daughter of Thomas A Frohock and Sarah Ann Ballenger.

The name Richard Lloyd is significant.  Later, we will find that two Frohock men married Lloyd women in Illinois.  Our own "Aunt Grit" Donaldson was named Emeline Crittendon Lloyd.  We wondered why a poor baby would be saddled with such a middle name by her loving parents Robert and Elisha Jane Lloyd.  We knew that they were from Kentucky, but it was not until this research that we found Emaline was born in Crittenden CO, KY

What would we expect next in KY?

Frohock, Sally, FE AL born 18 April 1859. Parents are John Frohock and Mahala Nation

Time does not wait.  We find that Alien G King married Miss Sarah E Frohock December 1, 1859 Alien Green King was born 7 Apr 1833 in TN.  There is evidence that Alien came to KY with the FROHOCK Family before he and Sarah were married.

The Frohocks were still in Kentucky in 1860 when the Census was taken.  We find the following:

Kentucky 1860 West Indexing System (Heads of Household) Frohock, John S CRITTENDEN CO KY 338 Dycusburg P O 1860 Frohock, Thomas A CRITTENDEN CO KY 338 Dycusburg P O 1860 Frohock, William J CRITTENDEN CO KY 338 Dycusburg P 6 1860

The CRITTENDEN CO KY Federal Census of 1860 reveals:

Alexander 29 WM laborer Thomas J 19 WM Harriet M 16 WF Zucius P 12 WM David Franklin 8 WM

Lucy J 6 WF King, Alien G 23 WM laborer Sarah E 24 WF

TN (John Alexander) TN (Our direct ancestor) TN TN TN TN KY KY (dau of TA and Sarah Frohock)

(The above Kings and Frohocks lived in the same house. The Kings moved to Illinois with the Frohocks. Sarah's middle initial is alternately E, W, V or A. Furthermore, we believe that her birthplace was TN and not Kentucky.  She is undoubtedly a daughter of Thomas A and Sarah A Frohock.)

Frohock, John S ,t

Mary M Sarah W

22 WM 24 WF 1 WF

KY

(Believe this should be TN)

Frohock, William J 29 WM laborer TN (WJB was living with Wm Clements family very large farmers-S130,000 Land declaration for taxes.)

Miss Lucy may not have ever moved to Illinois because the Crittenden Co KY Marriage Records Vol II 1866-1886 shows:

William W Thomas m Miss Lucy J.W. Frohock by TSS Dickenson at residence of Newton Clemons, wit: William Rushing and Newton Clemons Dec 25, 1870

We have found no record of what happened to Thomas A Frohock.  Did he ever move to Illinois?   Our guess-only a guess-is that he was reluctant to leave his deceased Sarah and he died before 1870. That is when the Frohocks migrated to Gallatin County, Illinois.  If there were 14 Frohock children, we have not found them.   We identify 6 sons above and 4 daughters.  Of course, the older girls could already have been married and lost the Frohock name.  One son is missing, assuming that there were 7 sons per stories handed down.  It is most likely that daughters Mary Elizabeth and Lucy stayed in Kentucky, although we will continue to look for their married names in Gallatin CO, IL.  We do not know what happened to Harriet.

Researched and Prepared by J Robert Black Great-Great-Grandson of Thomas A and Sarah A Frohock In the Year 1994

THE FROHOCK SEVEN

It was Thomas A Frohock who carried the Frohock name from North Carolina to Tennessee and married Sarah Ballenger on February 10, 1828 in Sparta, TN.  They began their family in Sparta, but moved on to Kentucky. Read THE FROHOCK FAMILY IN KENTUCKY.  The stories have been told that they had seven boys and seven girls.

Sarah A Frohock died in Livingston Co. KY on October 21, 1857.  Thomas A and family lived close by in Crittenden CO, KY for a few years.  About 1870, or before, the family began moving to Gallatin County, IL.  Mary Elizabeth and Lucy married and probably stayed in KY.  We have no record of Harriet after 1860.  We have no evidence that Thomas A ever reached Illinois.  He may have died or he may have chosen to stay with his beloved Sarah A. Daughter Sarah, her husband Alien King, and her 6 brothers moved to Gallatin County, Illinois.

To read the following properly, just remember that everything in parenthesis is my comment. Everything else is hard evidence from Census, tombstones, etc.  The Frohock brothers and sister are shown in CAPS.

The 1870 Census of Gallatin County is the first Census to show the Frohock name in Gallatin Co, IL as follows:

The 1880 Census of Somerset Precinct, Saline County shows another Frohock.  The Somerset Precinct, later remaned Mountain Township, Saline County, was close to the Eagle Creek Township line of Gallatin County.

The Jones Cemetery of Saline County has the following residents: FROHOCK, DAVID F (1851-1911),w. Matilda (1864-1928--2nd wife3)(Nigel Frohock-Black remembers talk of Aunt "Alda")

The above identifies one daughter and six sons of Thomas A and Sarah Ballenger Frohock, as having moved to Illinois.  One of the seven males could have died and that is the reason that we have never heard of another Frohock, other than the ones who moved to Gallatin County.  The female Frohocks married and the Frohock name was lost with their marriages.

A summary of the children of Thomas A Frohock found living in Illinois is as follows:

    SARAH FROHOCK-King B 1835 or 1839(married Alien G King in KY)

THOMAS J FROHOCK 1841-1907 (married Mary S Stricklin, daughter of Elizabeth and Jonathan G Stricklin.)

DAVID FRANKLIN FROHOCK 1851-1911 (1st wife was Harriet Hull. Last wife was Matilda ALEXANDER FROHOCK 1831-?-( wife died in KY3)

JOHN S FROHOCK 1837-3 ( married Mahd~a Nation in KY. 2nd wife Elizabeth Stricklin)

WILLIAM J FROHOCK 1832-3 (married in KY. Son William. No record of another marriage.)

LUCIAN POLK FROHOCK B1848 married Mary A Hull.( When LF died, Mary married James T Colbert who was the G Grandfather of Grace Jennings Frohock. The Colbert’s played an important role in the Robert Lee and Grace Frohock family.)

The Record of Marriages in Saline County, IL shows the following:

Frohock, David m Hull, Harit Aug 3, 1879 ( fits the DAVID above)

Frohawk, David m Moore, Fannie June 9, 1887 (must be an intermediate m for David)

Frohock, Phebe~m Vinyard, T J June 27, 1888 (Phebe, B 1874. was the daughter of Lucian and Mary A Frohock, and later the stepdaughter of J T Colbert).

Frohock, David F m Vinyard, Margaret A Hull Aug 2, 1893 (What does the Vinyard me~n? I don't understand this.)

    Frohock, W O m Moore, Lucy Oct 31, 1896

    Frohock, W O m Fletcher, Ellen J Dec 21, 1898 (a 2nd marriage3) (This could be the son of William J Frohock mentioned above)

THE FROHOCK EIGHT

This is an amendment to THE FROHOCK SEVEN. In that document we did not show that Mary Elizabeth Frohawk ever reached Illinois.  We left her in Kentucky.

In "THE FROHOCKS IN KENTUCKY" we left Mary Elizabeth Frohawk married to William Minetree'.  They married in 1859.  She was 30 and he was 34.   However, after studying the 1880 Federal Census of Gallatin County, Eagle Creek Precinct, we believe that Mary did arrive in Eagle Creek.  An excerpt of the 1880 Census is as follows:

118    Frohock, John S    34 M Mar Farmer     TN    NC    VA

        "        Elizabeth 39 F Wf KH          IL    --     --

"        Thomas    16 M Son Sng        KY    TN    TN

Household 118 indicates that John S Frohock has married Elizabeth, the widow of Jonathan Stricklin.  However, they have not been honest with their ages and we have discussed that elsewhere.

The Mary Minitric? in Household 120 is surely Mary Elizabeth Frohawk Minetree.   The years of birth are the same for each Mary.  Both were born in TN.   The father of each was born in NC. The mother of each was born in Virginia.  A William Mindric lives one door away in the Baker household in 1880.  The Bakers were friends to the Frohocks and related, too.  That William is most likely Mary's son with the same name as his father.  That was common in those days.  There are too many coincidences. Furthermore, John S Frohock is shown as the neighbor two houses away.   Apparently, William Minetree, Sr is dead.  He may or may not have moved to Illinois.  He may have died in KY. We do not know.

Nigel Margaret Frohock Black believes that she remembers her Father having two aunts on his fathers side.  We know that Sarah King was Thomas J Frohock's sister.  Now we are pretty certain that Mary Elizabeth was Thomas J Frohock's sister and that she did move to Illinois. Nigel does not remember the Minetree name.  She said that her fathers aunt was a strange sounding name.  Apparently the Census taker agreed that the name was strange because she could not spell it.  The question mark after the name was found in the Census and is not that of the undersigned.

The Robert Lee and Grace Frohock Farm: Prepared by John Robert Black Grandson of Robert Lee and Grace Frohock Son of James Isaac and Nigel Frohock Black July 18, 1997

When Thomas Jefferson Frohock came to Illinois he settled in Gallatin County, married Mary S Stricklin on 22 October 1870 and bought a farm in Section 3 of Eagle Creek Township.  He had 7 sons and one daughter.  The farm was in several plats but all close to his home so that, there was minimum travel time between the pieces.  The home was about 2 miles NE of Kedron.  The oldest child, John Henry, married and settled near his parents in Section 3.  John Henry's son Carroll Frohock maintained and lived on the Thomas J and John Henry’s farm for many years.  The other children of Thomas J and Mary moved out of Section 3 in due time.  However, this story is about Robert Lee Frohock, one of the sons of Thomas J and Mary.

Robert Lee Frohock sold Grace Alda Jennings married on Apri128, 1901.  Their first home was a rental northeast of Kedron near the home where Lee had been reared.  However, they lived there only a short time and in 1904 bought their farm in Section 21 about 1 114 miles due West of Leamington, LL.  The "farm" which they bought was 40 acres South of the Leamington Road and sloped upwards to the South.  The house was a small one.  We have not proved to ourselves who sold them the farm but the 1900 Eagle Creek Flat Map shows that George Tanner owned the land. George Tanner married Prudence Soward, daughter of Andrew 1820-1875 and Jerusha 1825-1900 Soward whose farm was further up the hill surrounding the Soward Cemetery.  Years later the Soward farm was owned by, and called, the Ira Vinyard farm. Actually, the George Tanner/Frohock 40 was also one of three 40 acre plats purchased by Russell Moore when he arrived in Eagle Creek about 1854.

About the time that our Frohocks bought the Tanner 40 an incident happened that enabled them to get another 40 adjacent to the North side of the 1st 40 and bounded by Eagle Creek the stream on the North.  Now, Lee's sister Mary Alice had married Kyle Blake, and a quick review of the land sales about 1900 shows that Kyle was buying and selling land "like it was going out of style".  One day Kyle was accused of embezzlement.  He disappeared suddenly and was never heard from again.   Mary Alice 18781908 was left with 3 small children and several pieces of land and some big mortgages.  She couldn't handle the mortgages and had to sell.  To whom? Well, daddy Thomas J got the family together and some of the brothers and sisters bought different pieces.  Actually, we hear that Daddy bought or arranged for the sale of most of the land.  The particular piece which Lee and Grace wanted was bought by John Henry and Lucretia. They gladly sold it to Lee and Grace.  Now I don't pretend to know that things happened in this order. Lee and Grace may well have known that they could get the Kyle Blake 40 when they bought the George Tanner 40.  Anyway, The newlyweds got 80 acres, 40 of which was bottom land and the other 40 was on a slope and good for the home, barns, cattle, hogs, pasture, etc. plus limited hay and grain farming.

Walter Frohock b 1912 said that he remembers the bottom 40 very well. It was a forest and swamp when his father bought it.  Welter does not actually remember the trees, but he does remember plowing around the huge tree stumps.  The trees were all cut down, but the remaining stumps were too large to "grub" out.   They were burned as much as possible and left for nature to rot them.  Dwight Frohock b 1922 said that be remembers the stumps, too.  Now, grandson John Robert Black does not remember the stumps but he does remember the tile drainage system which Lee and boys installed.  The land was actually very fertile and made good farm land after the trees were removed and the drains installed.

It may not have been just a coincidence that the new home of Grace Jennings Frohock was about one mile South of where she was born.  Yes, Isaac and Margaret (Colbert)Jennings had their farm north of Eagle Creek the stream.  Nigel Frohock said that she remembers hearing her grandmother Margaret singing.  The voice carried across the mile wide valley.  It is almost unbelievable today that a voice could be heard for a mile.  However, the author remembers hearing George Brinkley sneezing, and George lived a mile away from Grandpa Frank Black's home where we lived at one time.  Furthermore, we heard train whistles and towboat horns several miles away. Those were the days before noises became pollutants.

It was in 1918 that Lee and Grace bought the 120 acre Crawford farm.   Grace's mother Margaret (Colbert) Jennings died in 1916 and Grace used her inheritance to help buy the Crawford 120 acres.  James Riley Craurford Sr had married Sarah Jane Soward.  The Soward family lived up the bill South of the Frohock farm but they were there before Lee and Grace were married.  James Riley and Sarah Jane owned 128 acres East of the Soward home.  Eighty acres were in Grindstaff Hollow (Valley) Mack and Mary Ann Casey lived on another 40 acres up that Hollow.  Mary Ann was the daughter of James Riley Crawford, Sr. and my 1900 Flat shows that JRC owned the Mack Casey 40. A good case could be made as to how Mack and Mary Ann got that 40. Anyway, 80 acres of the parcel which Lee and Grace purchased were adjacent to the Mack Casey farm but North down the Valley.  The additional 40 acres purchased were up and on the bill westward.   The 80 acres in the valley, were good farmland but the upland 40 was of little farm value. The entire steep hillside had little value and the land on top of the bill was only good for pasture and as a homesite, but that is where the James Riley Crawford home stood.   Nigel remembers that Mack and Mary Ann's son Willie and his large family rented from the Frohocks the old JRC home circa 1920.  It is interesting that the 120 acres were referred to as the Crawford place for the many years that the Frohocks owned them and even today many still call that acreage the Crawford place.  The southeast Corner of the first 80 acres purchased by Lee and Grace touched the northwest comer of the 120 acre Crawford place purchased. The Frohock farm remained at 200 acres for as long as they owned it.  The entire farm was in Section 21 of Eagle Creek Township, Gallatin County, Illinois.

Now, about the Frohock house. Lee and Grace reared 12 children in the home which they bought in 1904. Obviously, there had to be some changes made to the little house.  Apparently, the first demand was for bedrooms.  Two new bedrooms were added on to the front of the old home.  One bedroom saved as a combination living room and bedroom.  Each of the front bedrooms had an outside door entrance from the front porch.  The old kitchen and dining mom continued to serve until about 1922 when Dwight, the last child, was born.  In that year Lee and Grace hired Sanford and Andrew Barnett (brothers who were from the area northeast of Kedron) to remodel the house.  The entire old part of the house was removed.  A large dining room was built onto the south side of the two "new" front rooms.  A kitchen was built on to the south side of the new dining room.  A closed porch was added east of the kitchen, and, a new Master Bedroom was added East of the Dining Room.  This Master Bedroom was not called that and it was about the size of many Master Bedroom Closets of today.  However, Robert Lee and Grace slept there all the years thereafter that they lived in that house.  It was not much but it gave them privacy, which most homes did not have in those days.  A cellar was installed under the dining room and perhaps under a part of the front rooms.  The chimney of the new dining room fireplace extended down to the cellar and a porch was added to the bottom for removal of ashes in the cellar rather than in the dining mom.  The purpose of the cellar was to store fresh fruits, milk, and home canned goods.  Yes, a cellar was a necessity for a large family, but Grandpa Lee had a reputation for inviting anyone and everyone who appeared at the door, to come in and eat.  We have heard stories that there was at least one guest every day.  Guess who took care of 12 children and cooked the meals.   Of course, the girls learned to do the chores at an early age.  A cistern was dug outside the new kitchen and a pitcher mouth pump installed in the kitchen over the sink.  Running water in 1922.

A new lighting system was installed in the home.  Of course, electricity was unavailable. Carbide, used by coal miners for many years, was used as the fuel.  A large pit was dug on the West side of the home and tanks were installed.   The tanks were for holding the flammable gas which formed when water dripped onto carbide grains.  A copper tube was used to carry the gas to the house and the rooms were "wired" with copper tubes.  The gas was transmitted to the overhead lamps similar to the Alladin type lamps of a later age.  This was state-of-the-art lighting at that time.  The gas was also used to heat irons to press clothes.   Bob Black remembers the submerged tanks and the ceiling fixtures, and the carbide tubing system, but it was inoperable in his day.  By then electricity had arrived making the carbide system obsolete.

So, how did the family survive after the old house was torn down and before the new rooms were built?  There were as many as 14 hungry mouths to feed.   Before the old Kitchen and Dining Room were removed a new "smokehouse" was built beginning a few feet SW of where the new Kitchen would be built.  The new smokehouse became the temporary' Kitchen and Dining Room until the new Kitchen and Dining Rooms were available.  After the construction was completed, the new smokehouse/kitchen was actually converted to a Smokehouse and remained there for the duration of the home.  The smoke house was built to hang meat from the ceiling and to build fires of hickory wood inside the structure.  Lots of meat was needed for a large active 'family. Years later, when there was no need for such a smokehouse, the building was a good storage place for many things.

An enclosed room called the "Porch" was on the East side of the Kitchen and the Dining Room.  This porch was used for many miscellaneous efforts such as milk and cream handling, egg separation, temporary food storage, etc.   It was also the entrance to the Cellar.  The Dining Room was an inside room on 3 sides and undoubtedly the warmest room in the house.  There were only two fireplaces in the house.  One was in the Dining Room and this room was used as a family room with a pass through china cabinet between the Dining Room and the Kitchen.   The other fireplace was in the Northwest Bedroom.  This Bedroom, with two double beds, also served a double function as a living room where guests could be taken with some privacy (before bedtime).  With so many children, there were always guests and often overnight guests. Another narrow porch was added to the west side of the Kitchen and Dining Rooms.

The Frohock farm had a nice large barn southwest of, and relatively close to the house. That barn was struck by lightning and burned in the mid 1930's.   A new barn was erected up the hill and southeast of the house about 200 yards.   By this time many of the children were gone from home and the need for a super large barn was not there.  A modest sized replacement barn was built.

Then there is the story of Welter Halton Frohock.  Welter said that each Frohock child was assigned daily duties.  One of his duties was to turn the chickens.  To explain.  Straight down the hill from the house next to the Leamington road was a well that had been dug.  It was perhaps 3 or 4 feet in diameter and walled with flat rocks.  Robert Lee dug the well himself. It was usually nearly full of water, and was used to water the stock, but never intended for human consumption.   Nevertheless, many travelers a foot, horseback, or what ever, knew of the well and would stop and get a drink, using the bucket that was always there.  The well was not covered and the rock wall extended about 2 feet above the ground, providing a minimum of safety for anyone stumbling by in the dark.  Now, the chickens roamed free and liked to roost at night on the rocks of the well wall. In order to keep the well clean, Welter was assigned the job of waiting until the chickens had gone to roost, and then turning them so that any droppings fell outside of the well instead of inside.  That is Welter's favorite farm story.  His evening play was often interrupted because he had to turn the chickens.

In addition to raising the regular crops of hay and corn, RL raised sorgum cane, which was a very sweet cane, unlike that found in most parts of the country.   Of course, from the sorghum cane came sorghum molasses, and Grandpa Lee made some of the best.  Making molasses was, and is, an art. The cane juice had to be cooked until it was a sweet syrup.  However, the cooking was not done in a kettle, but in a long wide pan of several feet dimensions.  The syrup was routed from one side of the pan to the other side by dividers while moving from one end to the other.  Meanwhile, the syrup was cooking all of the time that it was moving.  Long paddles helped keep the syrup over the hot part of the fire just the proper time.  That was the art.

The syrup required a lot of tasting to determine when it had been cooked enough.  Bob was a willing apprentice for this, but his judgment was not used in the final decision.  This author's duty was actually keeping the old horse turning the cane grinder which consisted of two heavy drums held together firmly while turning in opposite directions.  The long cane stalks were fed to the place where the drums meshed and the cane would be pulled in and compressed and the juice would be collected below.  The power for the grinder came from a long pole attached to the top of the grinder, and at the other end of the pole a horse pulled the pole in a constant circle around the grinder.  It was a monotonous job and the horse often just lost interest and stopped. That was Bob's job-to keep the horse from stopping.  Bob had received his apprenticeship from his grandfather Frank Black. However, that grandfather used mules.   Bob tried to avoid any conflict with his two grandparents by comparing mules to horses, but he had his own opinion.

One thing that stands out more vivid in Bob's mind than most other things was the amount of cockleburs in the lower 40.  The land was pretty fertile but the corn crops were just infested with the devilish burs. There were no herbicides in those days.  The hoe was man's best tool. However, the burs were worst when corn shucking time came.  No matter how many time the burs were chopped out, they were there in the fall.  The burs were hard on the hands and clothes and other body parts.   But the poor horses suffered the most.  Their tails and manes would be full of the hated burs.  Once infested, it was a tremendous task to remove them.  Modem herbicides have come to the rescue of farmers in that area.

The Frohock children moved away from the farm as soon as they were old enough.  They found easier ways to make a living.  But Grandpa Lee was a hard worker and never complained about the hardships.  He stayed on the farm until he was in his 70's.  Dwight their youngest child married Nada Brinkley, a local girl, and they stayed on the farm and worked it after Lee and Grace "retired".   Ten of the 12 children had moved out of the area and in the 1940's they agreed and decided to give the farm to the youngest 3 children-Irma Dee, Aaron Emit and Dwight Jennings.  Isaac Black handled the transaction.  A few years later Dwight bought the interest of the other two owners.  Then sickness struck Dwight and he moved to Colorado in the late 1940's.  Lee and Grace decided to call it quits in 1951 and moved into an apartment in Harrisburg, IL.  Apparently Dwight decided that he would not be returning to the farm and he and Nada sold the 200 acres and buildings to the Mosby Brothers.

So, that marked the end of the Robert Lee and Grace Alda (Jennings) Frohock farm in Eagle Creek.

Kenneth Garner Frohock, another child, was born 24 Sept 1917 and died 25 Oct 1917.

Robert Lee Frohock is a son of Thomas J and Mary S Frohock.  Grace Alda is a daughter of Isaac and Margaret(Colbert) Jennings.

Robert Lee Frohock had 7 brothers and one sister.  They were John Henry, Thomas G, Dallas, George, Frank,David, Mary Alice, and Charles.  Charles was killed by a horse when he was very young.

RLF and Grace began housekeeping northeast of Kedron, Ill.  Soon they built their home about 1-1/4 mile west of Leamington store, Gallatin County, Ill.  They reared 12 children in this home.  It has been said that the original piece of land was obtained from Thomas J Frohock.  In a way that is true.  But it was not so simple as that.  Records indicate that Kyle Blake had bought the bottom 40 acres.  Kyle was the husband of Mary Alice Frohock.  Land Deeds show that Kyle was buying and selling land at a rapid pace.  Then he was accused of embezzlement and ran away.   He was never heard from again by his family.  Mary Alice was apparently caught with more land and problems than she had money.  The Frohock Family helped her out by buying some of her land.  Some of the family (John Henry and Lucretia Frohock) had bought the 40 acres from her and when Robert Lee began to look for a farm, they sold the 40 to Lee and Grace.

The upper 40 acres where Lee and Grace lived was owned by George Tanner about 1900.   We cannot verify that GT sold the land direct to Lee and Grace but it is very probable.  See The Frohock Farm.

John Franklin and Isabelle Black lived about one mile West of Gibsonia, Gallatin County, Ill. and 1/4 mile South of Eagle Creek, on top of a hill.   The view was terrific.  On a clear day one could see up Fords Ferry Road to the "mountain" about 6 or 8 miles away.  It was so still that we could hear George Brinkley sneezing one mile away.  The train whistle could be heard 6 miles away.  The towboat whistles were 10 miles away on the Ohio River.  The home and farm of 120 acres had been owned by the Telford family, then David and Nancy Telford Martin. James McIntire, Nancy's 2nd husband, bought it and then it was passed on to John Franklin and Belie McIntire Black.  Further more, the Telford farm had been bought originally from Mary Black Alexander, the daughter of John and Sarah Black.  John Black was the first entry in the NW Territory Land Office opened in 1814.  John and Sarah lived on a quarter section 3/4 mile south of Eagle Creek (the stream)on Fords Ferry Road (later named Ill Rt #1).

The 120 acres was believed to have been given by Robert S Telford and his wife Anna to their daughter Nancy.  Nancy married David Martin and had 3 children.  They were Josephine, Mary and Thomas Jefferson.  It is believed that David Martin built the one room Log Cabin. Later, a kitchen and dining room were added to the north side of the house and two bedrooms were added to the East side.  In addition to the three Martin children, Isabelle McIntire, Laura May, Isaac and John Robert Black were born in the house.

After John Franklin died, Isabelle lived with her dau Laura, and the home place was rented for a few years but was finally abandoned.  Years later, the entire area was stripped for the coal and the home site became unrecognizable.

John Franklin and Isabelle are buried in the cemetery at Leamington, Gallatin County, Illinois.

James W and Nancy McIntire are buried at Leamington Cem James Isaac Black is buried at Elmsood Gem, Equality,IL. Nigel will be bu there.  Isaac M and Sarah Black are buried at McPherson Love Cem in Hardin Co. Several of the Black Family are buried at the McPherson Love Gem.

Isabelle McIntire Black was a half sister to Josephine Martin, Mary Martin and Thomas Jefferson Martin.  Josephine married Richard A Black, Mary married Samuel Bentley and Thomas Jefferson married Neva Lloyd. Of course, Isabelle married John Franklin Black, son of Isaac M and Sarah Jane Williams Black.

Early McIntire_marriages:  Burroughs, George m Margaret McEntire 12/12/1838 Margaret was a sister to James W McINtire(and therefore the Burroughs family is related to John Robert Black.) McIntire, Thomas A m Mary Ann Scribner 10/12/1847 Martin, Jesse m Martha McIntire 6/9/1836 Paisley, William m Antimony McIntire 3/24/1835 McIntire, James W m Mrs Nancy J Martin 2/3/1869(Grandparents of John Robert Black)

David Martin married Nancy Jane Telford on 1/10/1850.  David died and she married James W McIntire above.
