FUTURAMA COMICS #13
TITLE
The Bender You Say
STORY SYNOPSIS
Bender decides to cook for his fellow employees once again at Planet
Express and the food is so bland that it puts the entire gang to sleep.
Despondent he leaves Planet Express when he is approached by the Robot
Devil to be his persona chef. Bender quickly agrees and he is soon making
dishes for the robot underworld king. However, his first meal does not
go over so well and the Robot Devil is killed by Bender's cooking. With
nobody to run the place Robot Hell is quickly shut down and all the evil
robots are set free upon New New York to the dismay of its citizens. With
the riff raff running in the streets suddenly Preacher-bot is now overwhelmed
with work. Afterall, with Robot Hell now closed what motiviation is there
to be good?
Preacher-bot approaches Bender and asks if he wouldn't mind helping
out and being the new ruler of Robot Hell as it is important to keep the
balance and order of things. Bender agrees and soon Robot Hell is operational
again with the help of Leela and Fry who are brought there against their
will. Bender soon finds out that he is not equipped to run Robot Hell as
the other evil robots start to walk all over him and being evil everyday
is just no fun. He escapes Robot Hell and Fry and Leela find him in a robot
homeless shelter serving homeless robots. Bender says he just needs a break
from running Robot Hell and when they head back to it they are surprised
to see the Robot Devil. Seems, he too needs a break from running Robot
Hell as well and faking his own death was the perfect ruse to give himself
a much needed vacation on the Sun. Reinvigorated he sets about the task
of running Robot Hell once again.
Another stellar issue in what is slowly becoming a great title. This
is a great story by Ian Boothby and of course the art by James Lloyd is
top notch. Bender as the devil with horns and cape is a sight to behold.
This is another one of those stories that relies heavily on what has gone
on in the television show pulling in many characters and ideas and really
running with them here.

Six Characters in Search of A Story
STORY SYNOPSIS
Oh, the mind boggles. Patric Verrone returns to the pages of Futurama
Comics with what I believe is a groundbreaking piece of work. What is so
groundbreaking about a comic book? How about 7 comics in one? Well, really
it is 7 1/2 but I will leave it up to you to find the 1/2 story. How is
that for value for your hard earned dollars? I am having a difficult time
in coming up with a way to describe or review this without giving away
too much as that is going to be half of the fun of this issue so I will
just give a brief synopsis of the story. It revolves around the Planet
Express gang taking hold of Farnsworth's unfinished inventions room. As
was seen on the cover it involves many a bending robut so you know it has
to be good. Unlike issue 11 which was an idea taken from the show I cannot
see how this issue was similarly taken from the show but the underlying
theme of it (raiding the unfinished inventions room) could have been but
it certainly would not have played out like it did here in the comics.
I will say this about the story structure though, the idea of reading
it multiple ways revolves around focusing on individual characters. So
if Leela is your favorite character you can just read her story and the
same can be done with Fry, Bender or Amy. For the most part that is all
I have to say about this issue. Go buy it, read it, then read it again,
and then again, and yet again, and... well you get the idea.

TITLE
Fry Me to the Moon!
STORY SYNOPSIS
While waiting in line to have his Space Boy comic signed at a convention
Fry overhears that there is going to be casting for the part of Space Boy
for a new major motion picture. Being a huge fan of the series Fry immediately
wants to audition for the part. Bender decides to help him but only after
finding out Calculon will also be appearing in the film.
Fry wins the part by being such a big fan and knowing so much about
the character and because he will sign any contract for the chance at playing
Space Boy. This goes against Leela's better judgement who takes the contract
to some sewer mutants to decipher the alien language it is written in.
Fry quickly learns how tough it is to be a big Hollywood actor as on the
first day of shooting he quickly learns that all violence in the movie
is not simulated but real. The director and producers won't let Fry see
the entire script either, only that days shooting and after Leela finds
out what is in the contract Fry soon realizes he should have listened to
her and had it interpreted for him. At the end of the movie there is supposed
to be a final battle with Space Boy (Fry) dying. The penalty for not going
through with the scene? A fate worse than death.
Interesting issue and it went in a little different direction than
I thought it would. I think I preferred the Space Boy costume that Fry
was wearing as part of the promotional materials for this issue. That and
I would have liked to see the story revolve more around Fry as Space Boy
rather than getting bits and pieces of the overall movie idea. Still, the
story was fun and it was nice to see Eric Rodgers contribute a story again.
The art was pretty good overall but had parts that were a bit off and a
little distracting. I guess I thought this was going to be more of a fantasy
issue rather than a more literal one.

Kickin' It Old School
STORY SYNOPSIS
While visiting Cubert's school Farnsworth learns that Cubert's intelligence is slipping somewhat. His grades are slipping from an A+ to just a regular A. Farnsworth decides to pull Cubert from his school and send Fry, Leela and Bender with Cubert off to find a new school for him that will challenge him more.
After visting quite a few schools they finally arrive at one that will take them. But Cubert tricks the others and signs them all up for school of which they cannot get out of. While trying to figure out an escape plan the gang decides to attend the school and all begin to live out high school insecurities. Fry is again teased and bullied during gym class, Bender, trying to be more popular aces all of his exams and class work which doesn't go over well with his fellow classmates and Leela tries impressing her classmates by the fact that not only can she drive but she has her own space ship.
On one of their joy rides in the Planet Express ship Leela and her classmates slingshot around the Sun even though they know they are not supposed to. This starts a chain of events in which it starts to bring the Sun closer and closer to the planet they are on. Cubert devises an escape plan whereby the entire school is evacuated because by school policy nobody is to leave school premises until after the semester ends.
After dropping them off on a nearby planet Fry, Leela, Bender and Cubert decide to return back to Earth but when they get there they notice something very strange - the rest of Planet Express are gone. What's more is that they notice that the entire state population of New New York is missing as well. The question, where did everyone go?
And so begins the Time Bender Trilogy. A fun issue again with great artwork. This issue is worth getting just to see Bender in disguise as a nerd-bot. I think the issue is also leading up to a story that is going to be very cool.
