ACTION
FIGURES
FRY ACTION FIGURE
2000 - MAC Action Figures - Fry 10.00-14.00
Although not my favorite figure in the MAC Futurama line Fry is still
an excellent figure. MAC has done a wonderful job of capturing the essence
of the 21st century pizza boy turned 31st century interplanetary traveller.
With too many points of articulation to count you can put Fry in a variety
of poses and situations. Plenty of accessories that were pulled from the
show shows that MAC has done their homework.
Fry comes with his own base in which to display him with which is a
cryogenic tube that was his home for 1000 years. Thats cryogenic chamber
number 44 for those interested.
Great packaging job by MAC really rounds out the ensemble and makes
for an attractive display if you decide to leave him on the card.
LEELA ACTION FIGURE
2000 - MAC Action Figures - Leela 10.00-14.00
This is my favorite figure from the MAC line. Though Leela is rendered
slightly more curvy than in the show (something that I have noticed the
comics seem to take after) it is still an excellent rendition of the animated
character. Again, plenty of articulation and accessories including Nibbler
and his box with a fresh dose of dark matter.
What really sets this figure apart from the rest for me is the base.
I really like it. It really gives the figure and display a retro look that
harkens back to the 50's and 60's and all those UFO/monster movies. Take
a look at the 2001 calendar to get a better idea of what I am talking about.
This set looks like it was produced in a different era but with todays
technology.
Again, my favorite of the bunch.
BENDER ACTION FIGURE
2000 - MAC Action Figures - Bender 10.00-14.00
While probably being the easiest to sculpt MAC has once again taken
that extra step to create a really great package and display for Bender.
With bendy arms and legs you can put Bender in probably more different
poses than the other figures with conventional articulation. His head swivels
a full 360 degrees and his door opens which is good news because it will
give you plenty of room to store all of his accessories. Most will fit
in with no problems whatsoever.
Bender comes with a Suicide Booth base for display purposes. It would
have been nice to have a door to the booth and would have been a better
display but it really doesn't detract at all from the overall look and
quality. It is great that we got the Suicide Booth when we did as it really
hasn't been featured much in the show and has only really been talked about.
For hardly beeing seen it has remained a classic prop from the show that
people always seem to remember.
PLANET EXPRESS SHIP
2000 - MAC Action Figures - Planet Express Ship 10.00-14.00
Figure or statue? It is not a figure in the more traditional sense
as it doesn't represent a person or character, however, it does have moving
parts which seperates it from being a statue. Hmmm... such questions that
are better left unanswered.
I will call it a figure though. I wish MAC had not released this figure
carded. It is not that it is not a very good likeness of the Planet Express
ship it is just that it really doesn't fit in with the rest of the series.
I would like to have had this released as part of the Tower 4-pack exclusive.
It would have made the figure line stand out more as well as given alot
of people reason to pick up the 4-pack. That and it would have been the
perfect oppurtunity to include some more aliens like the purple fruit snake
and other creatures from the episode Love's Labour's Lost in Space. As
a stand alone it just seems that there could have been more.
I wouldn't mind seeing this as an exclusive ornament with glow-in-the
dark properties for added enjoyment.
8" NIBBLER STATUE
2000 - Nibbler Statue
Not su much an action figure but a small 8" statue of Leela's pet Nibbler.
Pretty cool in that it is in effect life size but without the articulation
and no accessories a bit over priced. The sculpt on this is great as it
looks like Nibbler completely. They have even gone so far as to give him
a wonderous expression in his eyes. The paint job is really good as well.
Again, if this were cheaper it would be an outstanding buy but at the
price it was originally offered it makes it kind of hard to justify spending
that much.
ORNAMENTS
LIMITED EDITION ORNAMENTS
July 2001 - MAC Limited Edition Futurama Ornaments 15.00
Released in 2001 as a San Diego Comic Con, Wizard World and MAC website
exclusive these were limited to a 1000 item production run. A good bargain
for the 15.00 price. The sculpts are basically the full size figures shrunk
down to 3" in height, have no articulation and come with a handy string
to hang on the tree or from other things during the year. This set will
be extremely rare in the future because of its limited print run, great
price and the fact that they are just so cool.
The box graphics are also top notch and in theme with the other MAC
Futurama products. It is amazing what they have done with standard artwork
and just made some minor adjustments to create a whole new look and feel.
Great job all around.
This set is the precursor to the actual Christmas ornaments that MAC
will be releasing in November 2001.
XMAS ORNAMENTS
November 2001 - MAC Xmas Ornaments 24.00-30.00
The long awaited release of MAC's Futurama Xmas ornaments is finally
over. They made it here in time for Xmas and I must say I am a little dissappointed
by them. I knew there would be no new sculpts on these and basically just
a repaint and I do not know if I got a bad box or what but the paint job
is not very good on these. Leela almost looks like the took figures from
the limited edition set and painted over here. The outline on her eye was
not painted on and all 3 figures have pupils painted way too big. They
all look as if they are stoned.
On further inspection of the figures it does appear that there was
some resculpting done. If you look closely at Leela's head you can tell
it is different than on the limited edition set, her pose is slightly different
and her arms and legs are much skinnier.
The painting process was different as well as the first set had a nice
glossy look to them while the Xmas set has a matte finish on them. Not
that it is bad one way or the other it just would have been nice to see
them the same way.
These are not all bad as I am looking forward to seeing these on the
tree this year and in years to come. It is just that it does not sit well
with me since this may be the last MAC Futurama product we get for a long
time. It would have been nice that they went out with a bang!
EXCLUSIVES
2000 - MAC Tower Exclusive 4-Pack
Nothing different here versus the carded versions except you get all
the figures at one time. I originally wasn't going to buy this but Tower
had been discounting these to almost half price and I couldn't pass it
up.
I am going to make my same complaint here that I did regarding the
Planet Express figure. I do not particularly like when released figures
are packed together and sold as an 'exclusive.' The entire run of MAC figures
would have benifitted tremendously by not releasing the Planet Express
ship as a carded figure and instead released it here as an exclusive figure
in the 4-pack. Maybe throw in a couple more aliens and this thing would
have rocked!
Another excellent job with the packaging here. I like the Fry, Leela
and Bender images although the back of the box is a reprint of the card
backs. This box is huge as well. It makes for a great display if you want
to keep the figures in the box. The figures are kept in place by the plastic
bubble and not by twisty-ties so it makes removing them and replacing them
easy. The only problem with putting the figures back is that the display
bases are all glued down so once you take them out you can't put them back.
Oh, well a small price to pay for having this set.
SWIMSUIT LEELA
2000 - ToyFare/MAC Exclusive
MAC was given the greenlight from Groening to produce a Leela figure
that was inconsistant with the show. Given MAC's bias to doing women characters
the ending result was the Swimsuit Leela exclusive. This exclusive was
available in two ways - the first was thru ToyFare who packaged her in
a nifty little box. The second was thru MAC where they packaged her on
a card similar to the regular figure of Leela that they produced. Both
are identical except for their packaging and both have the same accessories
as the regular figure but the base is colored a little different.
Other than the fact Leela is wearing a swimsuit this figure is the
same as the other one. Same articulation, same sculpt, mostly the same
paint job except of course for the swimsuit. It is a neat little figure
though and I am glad to have it in my collection. Another set of accessories
may have been better suited here like a beach ball, sunglasses, tanning
lotion and so forth. Maybe some small representation of Monument Beach
would have been fun as well. I know the Chef Bender got different accessories
and it would have been nice if they did the same thing for Leela.
CHEF BENDER
2000 - Diamond Distributor Exclusive
Kill all humans. Must kill all humans. The Chef Bender figure is an
exclusive distributed through Diamond Comics Distributor by Moore Creations.
Although a fairly lame variant as the only difference between this Bender
and the original release is the chef's hat and apron. The redeeming qualities
of this figure though are the all new accessories and the fact that it
is a little more in line with the show as we have seen Bender in hat and
apron before. The quote on the apron is also appropriate as Bender certainly
has made his feelings known about the human race.
Still would it have been too difficult to give us a really cool exclusive
of Bender and Flexo in a two pack? New accessories could have been bending
rods, the unbendable girder and the jumbonian atom tiera. Flexo is a simple
variant of Bender and would have been more fun than this Bender variant.
