TV GUIDE - 1999
To kick off the series premiere of Futurama, TV Guide produced a set of
3 collector cards inserted into their magazine. All covers featured the
same Bender cover and the cards had short little bios on the three principal
characters of Futurama as well as original artwork on the face. Although
the cards were the same size as the magazine the trading cards needed to
be punched out.
Also included in this issue is a nice little interview with series
creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen on how Futurama got started, what
were some of the themes behind the characters and what we could expect
from the series. Although TV Guide has done other articles on Futurama
they hav not come back to this idea of collectible cards or covers yet.
I would really like to see them do something like this again that would
highlight some of the other characters on the show similar to what they
did with the Simpsons.
Below are the inserted cards front and back graphics.

WIRED MAGAZINE - 1999

Produced in 1999 as well this set of three collectible covers was really
cool. In each cover one of the three main characters was featured holding
Matt Groening's head in a jar. The last cover featured Groening's head
on top of Bender's body. There is also a really nice poster that is out
there with all four covers side to side on it. Even though I do not have
one they look really nice and hope to acquire one some day.
A really nice interview with Matt Groening and some real fun graphics
highlight this issue of Wired. Topics covered go beyond the Simpsons and
Futurama and delve into some of Groenings background and how it led to
the creation of Futurama. Even though each of the issues has the same interview
inside they are worth seeking out for the great covers on them. All can
be had for just above cover price of the magazine.
NICKELODEAN MAGAZINE - 1999
Released in April of 1999 this magazine sports a nifty Futurama cover as
well as a neat little question and answer session with Matt Groening. All
the usual questions but with some nice artwork including Matt's first cartoon
characters. Don't know if the images reprinted here are the actual drawings
Matt did when he created them or if they were drawn specifically for this
issue but they are pretty cool nontheless.
CINESCAPE - 2002
Two great articles in one gigantic episode! First we are treated to an
interview with Matt Groening and he talks about his two shows - the Simpsons
and Futurama. Also included was an interview with David X. Cohen in the
second interview about the shabby treatment of Futurama by Fox. This is
a very timely article as at the time of its release word had just hit the
net about Futurama going on hiatus (cancelled).
Plenty of great graphics featured in both articles of Futurama from
various episodes. My favorite is the one taken from Tim Keeps on Slipping
where Fry, Leela and Bender are out collecting chromotons.
