2002 PALEY FESTIVAL
On February 28th the Museum of Radio and Television, as part of their annual Paley Festival held a panel with the stars of Futurama. I was lucky enough to attend and had a great time. The majority of the voice cast was there (except for Katey Sagal who was a no show) as well as series creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. Also on hand were a handfull of writers and directors.
I intend to keep adding to this report as things come back to me. There was so much to take in that I cannot remember it all at one time.

We arrived just in time for the activities to start as well as one of the voice actors - Maurice LaMarche! While we were walking around trying to figure out where to go a rather large gentleman in a really cool red Futurama bowling shirt was aking where to go as well. One of the ushers I overheard say 'Oh, you are part of the show? Right this way.' Had I been paying more attention it would have been nice to say hello but we were running a little late and wanted to make sure we were on time.

The evening started off with an introduction to the panel as well as everybody getting a chance to say hello, who they were and what character do they play. Below is a brief synopsis of some of the voice actors response on their characters:

Billy West
On Richard Nixon's Head - the impersonator is basically right on except for the fact that I added a werewolf element to it for no reason.
On Professor Farnsworth - I just felt that somebody that old would use alot of air when speaking.
Fry - Fry's voice is similar to mine - just a plain vanilla middle of the road type voice. Nothing special about it.
John DiMaggio
On Bender -
XXXXX

After the introductions we were treated to a showing of the episode Hell is Other Robots from the first season. This episode looked and sounded great as it was played on a movie size screen with a great sound system blaring out the theme music and sounds from the show. The second episode of the night was Amazon Women in the Mood from the third season. This got a real great response from the audience as this is a classic episode that is just alot of fun to watch. After showing the episode there was a rather long question and answer period with the audience.

Of course the question of cancellation came up and Matt Groening tried to stress that it wasn't cancelled and it is on hiatus. There was some tension around the question as you could tell there was some frustration among the panel over this. It was certainly realized that the animation and writing staff would be on to other things in the future and should Fox want to pick up Futurama a new staff would have to be put together.

It is easy to see why this show is as good as it is. The creative talent is top notch and everybody seems to get along well with everybody else. There was certainly alot of energy among the panelists and is something that comes out from each episode.

Overall it was a real fun time. I got to meet Billy West, Maurice LaMarche and Phil LaMarr. All were very nice and friendly and were fun to talk to. Maurice LaMarche was especially cool as both my girlfriend and myself are Pinky and the Brain fans. The biggest mob of fans was around Matt Groening but that is to be expected. He is like a magnet and is always friendly and nice to the fans. The only other person that we tried to contact (other than Katey Sagal who was a no show) was Lauren Tom. Again this was a situation where we are fans of other work she has done - in this case the movie The Joy Luck Club. Unfortunately she left the building rather quickly and stealthly so we never even saw her.
