RIX TINS
Rix Tins, the
makers of fine tin products, have thrown their hat in the ring and will
produce some merchandise based on Futurama. The product line will consist
of similar items from their Simpsons line such as wastebaskets, playing
cards and tin coasters. Similar to their counterparts the Futurama playing
cards will be released as both a tin holder and a tin can to resemble a
can of Slurm. Besides the can of Slurm none of the other scheduled items
will be show specific, although if you look closely you may be able to
pick up alot of these products from the coasters within the show..
Rix Tins has provided pictures of their tin case playing cards, coasters
and a sample of the playing cards faces on their website. The playing cards
looks like alot of fun as there are at least 16 different types of graphics
used on the face cards including the Joker cards. No word yet on wether
the playing cards scheduled to be released with the Slurm can will be the
same or will differ in any way.
This is a signficant release of merchandise I feel because for the
first time Futurama merchandise will be released that has more of a practical
use. Items that are things that could be found in any household such as
a waste basket or coaster or even the playing cards. This also marks the
first time that similar products based on the Simpsons precluded items
being developed for Futurama from the same company. It will be interesting
to see how these do when released and could open the door to a variety
of cool stuff based on Futurama!
For discussion on this visit the Futurama
Foundation and also visit Grant's
Toys who has these up for pre-order on his site. A special thanks to
Grant from Grant's Toys for breaking this news at the Futurama Foundation.
Also check the Toy Fare 2002 page for a
picture of the tin coasters.
COASTERS
The first of the merchandise from Rix Tins has arrived. They are a set
of 4 metal coasters and all feature themes of beer with Bender as the main
focus. The coasters come in a neat little storage tin with an image of
Bender on the front.
While I like the images and text to the coasters I think they could
have went one step further and incorporated some more themes from the show
into the graphics. Things like Mom's Old Fashioned Robot Oil and Slurm
would have went nicely with the Olde Fortran Malt Liquour themes and would
have been more in line with the show. As it is you can find at least a
couple of these references in the show but you have to look for them as
they are really background stuff.
The good news is that on the back of the packaging it lists this set
as Series 1. Hopefully this will mean many more series to come and the
aformentioned request of Mom's and Drink Slurm type graphics.
TIN AND PLAYING CARDS
Well, the first set of playing cards have begun to arrive now from Rix
Tins. I say the first set of cards because on their agenda is a Slurm can
with a set of playing cards inside which I think will be the same as these
cards. We shall wait and see as they are supposed to be out in August.
Now on to the first set. The tin is nice - I like the graphics and
it contains two sets of playing cards decks. The cards could be removed
and the tin used to store other little memorabilia of Futurama like the
tin clickers from RocketUSA or things like the promo buttons given out
from the Bongo Comics Group at various conventions. The artwork on the
face cards is great and features a good portion of all the Futurama characters
and not just Fry, Leela and Bender. Morbo, Hermes and L'rr amoung others
are featured as well. The graphics on the number cards is really well I
thought. They have a very old classic feel to them which I really thought
added character to the overall appeal. The only thing that was odd was
that there was no packaging at all. I guess the tin is the packaging but
all it comes in is a plastic slip case. The slip case has no tag or any
other graphics on them. Although this is a complaint it is a minor one
and should not detract from the overall appeal of the tin and playing cards.
