ROSWELL THAT ENDS WELL
Writer: David
X. Cohen
Director: Wes Archer
Production Code: 3ACV19
Original Air Date: December 9, 2001
Emmy winner for Outstanding Animated Program less than One Hour |
 |
Fun For the Whole Family
Except Grandma and Grampa
Finally the mystery of what crashed landed in Roswell can be explained.
When Fry puts a metal Iffy Pop popcorn maker in the microwave while watching
a Supernova explode propels the Planet Express ship back in time to 1947
- crash landing in Roswell, New Mexico. Bender becomes another statistic
of why you should wear a seat belt and Dr. Zoidberg is captured while cleaning
up Bender's pieces. They cannot get back as the microwave that was a catalyst
in their time travel is now broken and the problem becomes where to find
a new on.
This episode parodies the Back to the Future movies with Fry meeting
up with his future grandfather - Enis who is in the military. In trying
to make sure he doesn't hurt or kill Enis, Fry puts him in a 'safe' place
which happens to turn out to be a nuclear weapons test site. Enis is vaporized
in the blast and in trying to console his future grandmother, sleeps with
her and becomes his own grandfather. Ewww!
The military puts Bender's body back together in the shape of a space
ship and begin an alien autopsy on Zoidberg. Fed up with living in the
20th century Leela and Farnsworth decide to take matters into their own
hands and steal a radar dish that would help them create the radioactive
waves needed to propel them back to the future! They break into the military
compound, steal Bender's body, rescue Dr. Zoidberg and make for the stars.
Unfortunately they leave one precious piece of cargo behind that they later
dig up 1000 years in the future.
Real good episode with plenty of 3d graphics to oogle over. Funny story
line with many laughable moments (graviolas!) and situations. Farnsworth
dressed as a zoot-suiter and Enis' drill seargent telling him to clean
the latrine so that it is capable of being eaten off of - because he intends
to! Dr. Zoidberg had some really nice moments in the first half of this
episode as well - especially when being interaged by President Hoover.

This Episode Performed Entirely

Ho-Ho-Ho! Once and for all Fry, Leela and Bender decide to put an end to
the madness that is Xmas and really tell ol' Robot Santa whats's what when
they have a delivery of kids letters to Santa. They travel to the North
Pole of Neptune to the Robot Santa's lair to confront him. They are met
by little Neptunian elves who smuggle them into the Robot Santa's house.
A melee breaks out and before you know what is happening the Robot Santa
is shooting everything in site and the gang are running back for the Planet
Express ship. Upon trying to escape they encase the Robot Santa in ice
and declare Xmas open once again! But before Xmas can be truly Xmas they
will need a replacement Santa - Bender. After a song and dance number the
Santa Bender is on his way back to Earth to spread the gift of Xmas.
The people of Earth are not ready for a peacefull Xmas and Bender gets
attacked at every stop he makes. He finally gives up when Farnsworth shoots
him twice while coming down the chimney at the Planet Express headquarters.
Disillusioned, Bender dumps the gifts and decides to sit down and enjoy
a nice Xmas eve nip of alcohol. Smitty and URL spot Bender and mistake
him for the real Robot Santa, arrest him and put him on trial. He is found
guilty and sentenced to be executed at sundown.
Fry and Leela return to Neptune to release the Robot Santa and prove
Bender's innocence. They succeed at the 11th hour with a little help from
the Robot Santa and all is well between Bender and the Robot Santa but
not without a little warning to Bender about playing Santa next year.
So at long last the 'banned' Futurama Xmas show is finally seen. This
episode aired with a disclaimer at the beginning because of its violence.
I can understand why Fox would choose to do so. The violence itself wasn't
that bad I don't think but when considering the subject matter of Christmas
and peace and joy I can see how Fox would want to safeguard themselves.
All in all a very funny episode with plenty of laughable moments. The Neptunian
Elve worksong was really great as were
the Neptunian Elves.
As an added bonus to this episode the good folks at the Curiosity Company
have thrown in a few carryover scenes from the first Xmas show. Look for
a live bird to be fried as well as a gift given to the subterrainean people
which are similar scenes from Xmas Story. If we get more Xmas episodes
in the future it will be interesting to see if there are similar scenes
in those stories as well.

ANTHOLOGY OF INTEREST II
Opening Sequence Banner:
Hey, Tivo! Suggest This!
Making a return from Season 2 Anthology of Interest returns with 3
What If... scenarios featuring Fry, Leela and Bender.
I, Meatbag
Bender ponders to the What If machine what would it be like if he were
human. The funny thing about it is that not much is different - and therein
lies the story. Bender becomes human thanks to Professor Farnsworth and
continues on with his usual lifestyle of drinking, boozing and general
mischief. The robot lifestyle quickly catches up with Bender as he becomes
an overweight, disgusting slob! When Professor Farnsworth presents Bender
as his entry for the Nobel Peace Prize, Bender convinces the attendees
that the best life to lead is to live in the moment - to which the other
scientist quickly get their grooves on and party it up. Alas, the fast
life has caught up with Bender and he expires. He lived fast and left a
beautiful corpse - well, at least he lived fast!
Raiders of the Lost Arcade
What if life were like a video game? Fry wants to know and quickly
finds out. The earth is threatened by a menace from Nintendo64 in the form
of Donkey Kong. Quickly rushing to the war room Fry meets up with Commander
Pac Man and they set out to destroy the invading aliens in a spoolf of
the game Space Invaders. The invaders win but all they want is quarters
- precious quarters. When Farnsworth refuses and lets them know that they
need quarters to do their laundry he suggests the aliens do their laundry
together with them and all is saved.
Wizzin'
Finally, we get to see Leela's homeworld and her people when she asks
the question about her origins and her homeworld. Unfortunately for her
(and us as well) she is knocked on the head and goes into a dream world.
We're definitely not in New New York anymore. In a parody of The Wizard
of Oz, Leela must find her way to the Professor who will send her home.
Along the way she meets the cute witch of the North (Amy), the scarecrow
who needs a brain wether he likes it or not (Fry), the tin man who needs
a heart (Bender) and Dr. Zoidberg - who needs... well you get the picture.
Upon meeting the Professor he grants them all of their wishes including
Leela's by telling her to click her red boots together 3 times and to say
there's no place like home. She double crosses them and turns herself into
a witch but is melted by the water from an overflowing toilet.
Great episode that implies within the show that more Anthology of Interest
stories are on the way!

When You See the Robot,
Drink!
The Planet Express service lands a new account with RomantiCorp and Farnsworth
is able to do some much needed upgrades to the ship with the new account.
Part of the upgrades is to the ships onboard navigation system. Turns out
the Planet Express is actually a fembot who Bender take an immediate liking
to. A short romance (see Bender's love serannade
to the Planet Express ship) ensues between the two star-crossed lovers
until Bender gets tired of her after a couple of days. None too stable,
the Planet Express navigation system begins following Bender and basically
overcrowding him.
In the meantime, as part of their new account with RomantiCorp, the
gang heads out to Omicron Persei 8 with a special delivery of candy hearts
as a showing of thanks and in hopes that they will not invade Earth again.
The Omicronians are confused by the offering as they do not understand
the meaning of the word 'wuv' as printed on the candy hearts. Infuriated
they attack the Planet Express crew in a space dogfight. Unfortunately
for Fry and Leela, Bender taks this oppurtunity to break up with the Planet
Express ship. Depressed, the Planet Express ship has no fight in her and
surrenders to the torpedos from the Omicronian ships. Her solution to the
problem - to fly into a supernova thereby melding her and Bender together
for all eternity. In order to get as little interference with the crew,
she turns off the oxygen and artificial gravity.
Fry, Leela and Bender concoct a plan that entails Bender preoccupying
the Planet Express ship while Fry and Leela head for the main computer
so that they can shut down the navigation system and take control of the
ship once more. Leela runs out of oxygen in her tank but thanks to Fry's
unselfishness, he attaches his tank to hers sacrificing himself for Leela.
The second part of this episode was heavily a 2001 parody with spots
thrown in at the beginning and I must say it was a fun one. Sigourney Weaver
as the onboard computer did an excellent job as the manic navigational
system. The trip to the RomantiCorp headquarters was also a well done segment.

Its Like 'Hee Haw' With
Lasers
Bender becomes a waste disposal service by dumping toxic waste and other
non-essentials into the sewer. This makes the mutant sub-terranian people
none to happy so they kidnap Fry, Leela and Bender from the surface and
threaten to dip them in a pool of toxic waste. This will mutate them but
not the mutants as they are already mutated. A mysterious couple shrouded
in cloaks intervenes and sets the three free. A chase ensues and Fry, Leela
and Bender hide out in an abondoned house.
In the house Leela discovers a wierd shrine devoted to her. Pictures,
mementos and all her life are on display here (It's like some kind of wierd
Leela museum, and I'm the Leela!). Leela cannot believer her eyes and the
three are captured by the mutants once again. This time the two mysterious
mutants work a deal to set the surface dwellers free. Fry and Bender gladly
oblige, however, Leela is not conviced. She feels that the two mysterious
mutants know something about her or her parents. She jumps into the pool
of toxic waste and surprisingly comes out unchanged from the dip. She chases
down the two mutants and begins to question them. She is convinced they
have killed her parents.
Meanwhile, Fry obtains the note left with Leela when she was dropped
off at the orphanarium as a child and has Professor Farnsworth analyze
it. What they are able to abstract from the note was that Leela is really
a mutant, the most human mutant ever born and that her parents wanted a
better life for her so they dropped her off at the orphanarium many years
ago.
Fry rushes back to intervene between killing the two mutants who she
does not realize are her parents. Fry uncovers the truth for Leela and
one of the greatest mysteries of Futurama is solved!
Beautiful episode! Top notch all the way! Great story and plenty of
funny moments throughout. The ending montage of Leela's life as her parents
intervene without her knowledge was truly touching. It will be interesting
to see if this origin of Leela holds up over time or if the writers will
put a new spin on this tale in the future. I must say I am a little dissapointed
in that she is a mutant and not an alien but it is really a minor complaint
against an otherwise great episode.

Krafted With Luv by Monsters
It's Mars Day on Mars so the Planet Express crew decide to spend it at
Amy's parents house. It is a perfect oppurtunity for them to spend time
with her boyfriend Kif who is nervous because he wants to make sure they
like him. The Wongs show them around the Wong Ranch and their prized collection
of buggalo. They have a barbeque and invite many guests and all is going
well until a mysterious tornado comes and sweeps all the buggalo away.
Kif takes this oppurtunity to prove that he is a real man's man and worthy
of dating Amy and bring back the heard of buggalo. The buggalo are found
easy enough and are rescued from a volcano but just as the gang are about
to celebrate another tornado comes in and wooshes them around. In the eye
of the tornado the ancient race of native Martians come flying on buggalo
and confront the Kif and the rest. The Martians have rustled the cattle
in hopes of getting the Wong's off of Mars and to get their land back for
which they traded it for a single bead. When they find out that Amy is
the Wong's daughter they let the buggalo go and take her hostage instead.
Back at the ranch a dejected Kif must tell the Wong's about Amy's kidnapping.
They decide to hire a real hero to help them out this time and so call
in the Man with No Name - Zapp Brannigan! Zapp, Kif, Fry, Bender and Leela
all head out to negotiate with the Martians for Amy's release. When they
get to the ancestral homes of the Martians they are none to happy and do
not want anything to do with negotiations. They conjure up another tornado
and sweep Amy away at which point Kif rides one of the buggalo into the
tornado to save her. The Martians are impressed as they believe that only
those who hold the buggalo sacred can fly them and decide to make peace
and hand Amy back to her family over a smoke of the peace pipe. When Kif
accidentally coughs up smoke from the peace pipe the Martians are insulted.
They tie up Kif and decide to crush him with the same pebble that they
traded their land for. What they didn't know is that the pebble (really
a boulder) is actually the largest diamond known to man. The Martians decide
to take the diamond and buy land on another planet and call it sacred and
so fly off into outer space.

Pssst... Big Party at Your
House After the Show!
Feeling the need to be remembered after he is gone Bender looks for ways
to bring himself noteriety. First he robs a local community swimming pool,
when that doesn't work the gang at Planet Express throw him a surprise
funeral. However, nobody eulogizes Bender to his satisfaction and so he
sets out to the streets of New New York where he tries both skate dancing
and tagging. Both fail miserably.
In the meantime there is a delivery that needs to go to Osirius 4 so
it is off to another mission. The planet is modeled after Earth's Egypt
and the delivery is a large hunk of sandstone. Upon delivering the stone
the crew is immediately captured and brought into slavery. Bender is impressed
with past Pharoh's and the great tombs erected in their honor. When the
Pharoh is accedentally killed, Bender makes sure that he is named his successor.
His first order of business is to get the slaves working on a new statue
of gigantic proportions in his honor. When the slaves are complete Bender
is less than impressed - it is too close to his exact specifications. Infuriated
the slaves rebel and bury Bender and his servants (Fry and Leela) in his
own tomb. To escape they must use Bender's private stash of super proof
alcohol.
Much debate over the quality of this episode. I personally enjoyed
it very much and would recommend it to almost anybody. The funeral scene
in the first half of the episode was very well done as was the action that
took place on Osirius 4. Seeing Bender sullenly scootch off on a boogie
board was also funny. Not much character development here as the episode
was more geared towards out and out shennanigans from start to finish.
The animation and colors used throughout were top notch as well. Also check
out the new song from this episode sung
by an Osirian who bears a striking resemblance to Elton John.

Please Turn Off All Cell
Phones and Tricorders
While fighting off space pirates, Bender is accidentally jettisoned from
a torpedo bay into the vacuum of space. Considering the Planet Express
was doing top speed at the time they have no chance of catching up with
and saving him. Drifting off into deep space Bender wonders how he will
pass all of eternity when he encounters a meteor storm and is struck by
a special meteor inhabited by tiny beings. Seeing Bender they assume he
is God and begin worshipping him and praying to him. Bender, however, finds
it difficult to be omnipotent and has a hard time adjusting to his new
found godhood.
Meanwhile, Fry is determined to find his friend and learns of a secret
sect whose sole purpose is to scan the galaxies looking for signs of God's
existence. Fry determines to ge to see these monks to use there telescope
to scan the heavens for Bender.
Some of the people of Bender are happy and joyfull as Bender has answered
their prayers and made life enjoyable for them while others feel neglectd
and forgotten by their god Bender. They conspire to start war with the
others and a full scale nuclear war breaks out on planet Bender obliterating
the entire race. Bender is alone once again drifting alone in space. He
does meet up with a being of incredible power who he believes to be the
true God of all things. Bender tells the being of his failures as a god
of his own and the being is sympathetic. Bender asks to be sent home but
the being tells him that he cannot send him home because he is not really
God and it is out of his power. Meanwhile Fry and Leela come to the sect
and use the telescope to look for Bender. Frustrated disappointed in not
finding Bender they give up, but not before a signal can be sent out to
Bender and the being. Locking onto the signal the being sends Bender back
thru space to his home planet Earth and back to his friends.
An unusual episode here dealing with some weighty topics like God and
religion and purposes of life. Bender's lesson as a god of his own only
tells that with great power comes great responsibility while his rendesvous
with the supreme being is humbling. A visually stunning episode as well
as Bender is provided with beautiful backdrops os the cosmos as he floats
thru space.

Love It or Shove It
At the annual shareholders meeting for Planet Express, Fry meets up with
another guy who has been cryogenically frozen. He froze himself because
he had an incurable disease known as Boneitis. Known only as That Guy,
Fry unwittingly sets in motion a series of events that puts That Guy in
charge of Planet Express. Being an 80's type of guy he immediately begins
to change the image of Planet Express. Not through hard work or wanting
to be the best delivery service available but by making it a hip company
with plenty of pizzaz. This catches the attention of the biggest delivery
service around - Mom's delivery service. Mom makes a deal with Thaty Guy
to buy Planet Express so that she can eliminate the company as well as
making That Guy (and the other shareholders of Planet Express) very rich.
At the shareholders meeting to decide if the deal wil go thru or not,
all the Planet Express shareholders vote against it save That Guy, however
he holds majority vote. Mom's shareholders agree to the takeover and the
deal is about to go thru when That Guy's Boneitis kicks in. Seems that
even though there is a cure for it in the future he has been so busy being
an 80's guy he has forgotten to cure it. Dead, Fry assumes controlling
shareholder and through his own motivational speech, drives the price of
Planet Express right down in the basement. While the others were excited
about being rich after the takeover they are now poor once again as Fry
calls the deal off.
Overall a real fun episode I think. That Guy was a real fun character
and a real good representation of all that was wrong during the 1980's.
Great use of characters in this episode as a major portion of supporting
characters are shown at various times. That Guy's last words were also
very funny as even though he has screwed all the people of Planet Expres
in the end he can still only think of himself ('My only regret is that
I have Boneitis').

Scratch Here to Reveal Prize
While trying to make some Signoids feel at home, Fry offers to play a blernsball
game between the Signoids Pizza Parlor and Planet Express. Leela is the
pitcher and proceeds to bean every batter she faces. The commisioner of
the blernseball league sees Leela and notices that she is a fan favorite.
He signs her to a contract making her the first woman blernseball player
ever. What she doesn't realize is that she is there as a novelty only and
not for any particular skill she may have.
Setting out to not be the worst blernseball player in the history of
the game she seeks the council of the current worst player - Hank Aaron
the 24th. Thru practice Hank Aaron the 24th teaches Leela how not to bean
a player when she pitches. With a new sense of purpose Leela is prepared
to pitch again but cannot get into a game as the Mets are leading for once
and not losing. But when she goes up against another woman blurnesball
player it sets up a historical confrontation. Getting up in the count at
two strikes and needing only one more strike to avert shame Leela throws
a pitch headed for destiny. The woman hits it out of the park and the Mets
lose and Leela becomes the worst blernesball player ever supplanting Hank
Aaron the 24th.
A very fun episode I thought that was made all the more fun by the
great job of Hank Aaron doing the voice of not only himself as a head in
a jar but also as Hank Aaron the 24th. It was a great character that would
be great if he made an appearance again in the future (hey, he is still
the worst football player of all time so it could happen).

If Accidentally Watched
Induce Vomiting
Once again after 'treating' the Planet Express crew to his unusual cuisine
the gang has nothing but bad things to say about Bender's cooking. When
he over hears their complaints he gets upset and runs away for good. He
turns to Elzar (Bender's hero) but he rejects him. He gives up any hope
of him becoming a chef until by strange coincidence he befriends Helmut
Spargo. A world renowned chef who is now living out his days in obscurity
in a hobo camp and who was also usurped as a television chef years ago
by Elzar. Seeing his passion for food, Spargo decides to take Bender under
his wing and train him. Part of his training is to cook one decent meal.
Bender succeeds but his 'acceptable' meal kills Spargo but not before he
is able to bestow upon Bender a vile that holds the secret to perfect flavor.
Armed with the essence of perfect flavor and to honor both himself
and the memory of Spargo, Bender challenges Elzar to a cook-off on the
television show Iron Cook. The battle is fierce with plenty of bribing
going on and Elzar producing some wonderfull looking dishes. Bender meanwhile
uses whatever is at his disposal to complete his dishes including a hammer.
In the end he adds the essence of perfect flavor to his dishes and the
judges all agree that even though Bender's food is funky it tastes Fun-kay!
Needless to say Bender wins the competition of Iron Cook but says he did
it to honor Spargo and agree to take the lesser title of zinc saucier.
Being a fan of the Japanese import Iron Chef this episode was alot
of fun. The whole spoof on Kitchen Stadium and Chairman Koji was wonderfull
to see. This episode aslo featured a great second plot involving Dr. Zoidberg
and a scale model of the biggest glass bottle in the universe. Zoidberg
frames Fry for the crime and the laughs keep on coming! Alls I can say
about this episode is I hate bottles! - Bam!!

Where No Fan Has Gone Before
In the future Star Trek has grown so big and popular that it has spawned
its own religion. In order to stem the tide of this new religion all the
tapes were sent to the Forbidden Zone and banished, all Trekkies are sacrificial
killed and the words Star Trek are forever banned. This being one of Fry's
favorite shows he enlists the help of Leonard Nimoy's head in a jar to
help him resurrect this classic science fiction show. While traveling through
the Forbidden Zone they are pulled down to one of the planets surface and
crash land. The landscape is filled with movie sets and props befitting
any bad television show. The re-embodied heads of William Shatner, Walter
Koening, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Defrost Kelley and Welshie appear
and greet Nimoy and the others. Seems they crash landed on the planet as
well and when they awoke they had new bodies. The culprit of all of this
is an energy being by the name of Melllvar who appears and re-embodies
Leonard Nimoy.
The purpose of all this is Melllvar has fashioned himself the greatest
Star Trek fan of all. When the tapes of the 70+ Star Trek episodes were
jettisoned from Earth he intercepted them and has become a life long Trek
fan. Nimoy is the last piece in his collection and allows him to start
Trek Fest 3002. During the Fest he announces that he has a fan script that
the Trek actors must perform. Seeing there chance to escape, Fry, Leela
and Bender head for the stars. A guilty conscience compels them to return
to the planet and try and save the others but when their scheme goes wrong
they again crash land on the planets surface. Confused by their show of
bravery and cunning Melllvar is not sure who should be his new heroes.
The cast from Star Trek or the crew of the Planet Express. The only solution?
A fight to the death between both camps! While fighting they come to realize
that it serves no purpose and decide to work together. Using the engines
from the Starship Enterprise on the Planet Express ship they are able to
escape Melllvar's homeworld but Melllvar has anticipated this move and
has opened up his Klingon bird of prey and attacks the Planet Express ship.
Fry reasons with Melllvar and he realizes that he shouldn't destroy
the one thing he loves just because he can't have it. He decides to move
out of his parents basement and try to find a job.
Interesting episode as for most of the episode is told in flashbacks
during a court marshall conducted by Zapp Brannigan. It is not until the
end that we are caught up to speed and are in present time that the episode
is resolved. Great cameo appearances by the original Star Trek cast as
they all did a great job. Each had their moments with funny lines and each
delivered them expertly. Also of note is that the closing credits had a
very Star Trek feel to them and unfortunately it is Fox's practice to modify
those credits so they were never aired. For those who have not seen it
there is always the DVD's to look forward to.
