TOY FARE 2003 SPECIAL REPORT
Another year and another Toy Fare. I really wasn't expecting to much from this years event and unfortunately that was the case. With Futurama not likely to come back many manufacturer's are a little leary of investing any time and effort into merchandise that historically has not sold all that well with the show backing it up and now with the prospect of having no show support it makes it an even bigger risk.
My feelings are that we will probably see a major downturn this year and in the next couple of years and then see a ressurgence of interest. With the success of Futurama on Cartoon Network, impending release of the R1 DVD's as well as R2 Season 3 this year and surely Season 4 on the horizon and other syndication deals as now unknown the show will find its audience and build a solid fan base that will be wanting memorabilia from the show.
That being said, the only thing that was really being displayed at this years show was RocketUSA's new Zapp Brannigan Ray Gun. Member Blueduck3000 from the Futurama Foundation was nice enough to get me some pictures again this year and as last year he was there to cover the new Simpsons release of which he has an extensive report over at the Simpsons Collector Sector. Plenty of new stuff with the Simpsons so if you are interested in that as well as Futurama head on over to the SCS.
RocketUSA had updated their site with new catalog pictures of the Ray Gun but here is a little better close-up of it. From previous press releases this is to have sparking action when you pull the trigger and as always RocketUSA has done a superb job in the packaging.  It looks as though it will have a neat little die-cut window so that you can see the gun and if history proves true I am sure that RocketUSA has made this extremely collector freindly with no twisty ties and nothing to take apart to get to the game. In this way you can have the best of both worlds - you can take the gun out and have epic space battles with your fellow DOOP companions and you can safely put it back in the box for MOC display.
