Go Metric America!
Welcome to the Go Metric America website!
Go Metric America supports the grassroots movement of Americans for the
metrication of our beloved United States of America. Metrication is the process by
which a country or company makes the switch to using the SI or metric system of
measurements. The US has been in the process of adopting the metric system
since 1975. There are millions of Americans that have already switched over to the
metric system in some respect. It is difficult to completely change due to segments
of our society that are still lagging.
The metrication movement of America is a necessary step if our country is to
continue to do well in the world economy. It is estimated that 50% to 75% of
American Industry is fully metricated. The remainder is wishing to go metric but is
either cautious or cannot switch due to regulations. Our companies, our employers,
are possibly losing contracts daily due to America's failure to adopt the SI. This
amounts to perhaps billions of dollars annually. Furthermore, it is inefficient for a
company to produce two lines of products in two different sizes or try to label in
dual-units and try to market them in America and abroad. It has been estimated
that the United States' failure to adopt the SI is costing up to 1,000,000,000,000
dollars per year in unnecessary costs. This is about 3,000 dollars per American per
year. Metrication could possibly create more jobs and save the government, private
industry and especially the public at large vast sums of money in costs.
The switch by our medical facilities will save lives. Some Americans insist on using
pounds and degrees Fahrenheit. Doctors use kilograms, Celsius and centimeters.
There are conversion errors every year that costs lives because the general public
has not switched.
The only way to change America is for us to motivate change.
Get involved in the movement!
- Write to your representatives and ask for the immediate adoption of the SI.
- Thank companies that offer metric only products and buy them often.
- Get educated on the issues and history of metrication in America.
- Make the change in your personal life by using SI units in conversation and in
household applications. For instance, if your home thermostat can display
Celsius, do it. You'll learn that the mid 20's are quite comfortable.
- Write to news outlets and ask that weather and other stories use the SI
exclusively. Did you know the weather is actually recorded in degrees Celsius
and then converted for broadcast.
- Learn and use your own personal measurements such as height and mass in
SI units. Try to get others to do the same. Your doctor will thank you.
- Buy metric only products whenever possible.
- Write to government agencies, companies or individuals to ask for metrication
and thank the ones that do change.
- Assist companies and individuals make the change by providing accurate
information and guidance. There are specialists in the world that specialize in
helping entities make the change and we can help in finding one.
- Ask for product information from companies in SI units. This will show that
the demand is out there. Also, demand metric only products. Have you
noticed how hard it is to find a metric only tape measure in this country?
We as Americans must take our future and that of our country into our own
hands. Change will not just happen! I urge all of my countrymen to abandon the
ancient system and adopt the SI in your daily lives. Only by insisting that the SI be
used will it be so. Together we can change. Together we can strive for a more
perfect union. Together we can Go Metric!
Thanks for your action,
GO METRIC AMERICA!
