Now, could there really be a Mardi Gras which is not Gay? Never. Mardi Gras and Gay life are so intertwined that it would be surreal to have a Mardi Gras without Gay participation. In Lafayette this is particularly true because almost everyone will agree that the Gay Mardi Gras Balls are the
better ones. Recent years have seen attendance at these Balls increase to the point
of capacity where they are held.
The Mystic Krewe of Apollo sponsors a ball which is second to none. This includes Mardi Gras balls anywhere. It is held at the Lafayette Cajun Dome and is attended by many more straight than Gay people. Costumes are fantastic and even though the program can be a bit long it is none the less entertaining. One look and it is hard to understand how the sequine makers can keep up and how there are any surviving ostrich in the world. Beads, bows and feathers abound. Pictures from some of the Balls can be viewed here. |
