Psychology in the Schools

School Psychologists apply their specialized skills in the school setting and they must be well acquainted with the functions, methods and problems of the schools. Your School Psychologist is a highly trained professional.

His or her background includes:

·   a bachelor's degree (usually in psychology or education).

·   a graduate degree (at least two years of additional study: Masters + 36 or Doctorate) from an accredited school psychology program.

·   an internship in the field for direct experience.

School Psychologists are certified  by the State of Nebraska Department of Education and granted a Special Services Certificate with an endorsement in School Psychology.

Their unique training in both education and psychology helps them to understand the child and his environment. This enables them to work closely with both school and home in determining and meeting the needs of the child.

School psychologists all view school and home as major environments affecting the growth, development and behavior of children. They are working with parents and educators to improve the relationship between home and school. To know when a child has problems in school and to help resolve them, one must understand both environments, as well as the child’s individuality.
