Atreides, Alia:
Daughter of Leto Atreides I and Jessica, Alia was in vitro when Jessica underwent the "spice agony" ceremony, and thereby possessed the knowledge of her "other memories" from before even birth.

Alia was raised in the fierce warrior traditions of the Fremen, and as a pre-teen girl, taking her part in the Battle Of Arrakeen, she murdered her grandfather. the Baron Harkonnen. Once Paul disappeared from public life after the death of Chani, she inherited the imperial throne as a regent for Paul's children until Leto II and Ghamina became of age.

Bene Gesserit history shows that children who posses "other memories" at a young age have inadequate time to develop the maturity and strength of mind and will necessary to resist pressure from their ancestors and are often possessed and controlled by less noble members of their "other memories" (known to the Bene Gesserits as an "Abomination"). Alia is such a case, having been possesed by her grandfather, Vladimir Harkonnen. In league with Harkonnen, who remained a very vengeful person, she perverted the religion established by her father, Paul Muad'dib, to suit her own ends and pleasures, until killed in a fall from a high point in her temple shortly after realizing that in ordering the silencing of her foremost critic "The Preacher", she had caused the murder of Muad'dib -- her own brother.

B
Bene Gesserit
The Bene Gesserit are an intensely loyal pseudo-religious sect, led by females, whose leaders ("Reverend Mothers") are empowered with "other memories", the ability to access the personalities of their female ancestors and draw from their knowledge and advice. The Bene Gesserit insert female operatives in key places such as the wives or concubines of political leaders, to gain access and influence with those leaders.

The secret agenda of the Bene Gesserit involves a breeding program. using detailed and exhaustive genetic records and analysis, the Bene Gesserit are striving to produce a 'Kwisatz Haderach', a male Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, who should have the ability (prescience) to explore the future as well as the past accessible by Reverend Mothers. Being able to forsee the future and define how to bring a desired future about, this person would enable the Bene Gesserit to gain absolute control. Paul Muad'dib became the Kwisatz Haderach a generation too early, unexpected to the Reverend Mothers. Without adequate indoctrination by the Bene Gesserit, Paul had the abilities the Reverend Mothers desired, but no loyalty at all to the Bene Gesserit.

During the long reign of Leto II ("The Tyrant" as the Bene Gesserit called him, the Bene Gesserit were kept in a subservient position while the God Emperor led humanity along his Golden Path. Once Leto II died. As the population started returning from The Scattering, the Bene Gesserit found themselves the special target of a vengeful group of returnees known as the "Honored Matres", whose techniques included destroying whole planets out of revenge or the desire to eliminate as little as one person.

Butler, Serena
The "High Priestess" of the Butlerian Jihad, mother of "Manion The Innocent". Serena Butler is the daughter of the president of the Human League, who was captured by the forces of Omnius, the evermind, during a peace mission and sent to Earth. Pregnant with Vladimir Harkonnen's son, she is given as an investigatory subject to Erasumus, a semi-independent robot, for study. While studying the relationship between mothers and children, Erasmus dangles, then drops Manion to his death from a high ledge, triggering a revolt on Earth that eventually results in the Butlerian Jihad.

After nearly a hundred years of the Jihad, continual fighting against Ominus and the forces and planets the evermind controls, Serena intends to carry a truce offer to Ominus. But she is betrayed by other Jihad leaders, who fearing she could end the Jihad and thus remove them from power, instruct her bodyguards to kill her if she appears to be succeeding in her mission. She does. and they do, but the forces in the Jihad are ready with a computer-generated, gruesome death that inflames the human population and promises to continue the Jihad for another century.

Dune
Author: Frank Herbert
Summary: The story of Paul Atriedes, later known as Muad'dib
Dune covers the life of Paul Atriedes from his late teens, shortly before his family is given the planet of Arrakis (Dune) to govern, replacing the Atreides arch-enemies, the Harkonnens. The Harkonnens plot and carry out a coup-de-etat that leads to the capture and murder of Duke Leto Atreides I, Paul's father, but fails to kill Paul or his Bene Gesserit mother, Jessica.

Paul and Jessica escape to the wild desert of Arrakis, where Paul earns a place through combat in Fremen society and his mother, by undergoing and surviving a Bene Gesserit ritual seeded to the Fremen in the long past, becomes the Fremen's spiritual leader and enables Jessica's inner awareness ("inner voices") of all of her female ancestors. Paul find himself the embodiment of a Fremen legend, that of Muad'dib, the mouse, the warrior who will come from outside and lead the Fremen to undreamt heights. But avenging his father and reclaiming what the Harkonnens stole from him is foremost in Paul's mind. Undergoing the same ritual as his mother, Paul survives, but can not only see the past, but can see all the possible futures through his "prescience".

Using his gifts, and having trained the Fremen with Bene Gesserit combat skills, he leads his warriors to an attack on the Harkonnens and the Emperor who is currently reviewing Arrakis and is at the planet's primary spaceport. He succeeds, ending the Harkonnen dynasty and forcing the Emperor to abdicate the throne to Paul.

Kwisatz Haderach
A male Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, and the focus of the Bene Gesserit breeding program. The Bene Gesserit plan was to have completed in the generation after Paul Muad'dib Atreides, but where the plan required a daughter (who was to have mated with Feyd-Ratha Harkonnen) who would be the mother of the desired Kwisatz Haderach, Jessica instead bore a son, Paul. Paul proved to be the person the Bene Gesserit desired, but had no loyalty to them.
