GDCA Board Meeting Minutes – November 15, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. Present were Randy Nichols, Suzanne Schexnayder, David Franz, Sonya Pickens, Greta Corona, Carolyn Schwarzhoff, and Mary Fontenot. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted.

Sonya gave the Treasurer’s Report and talked about her vision of the perfect spreadsheet, as only a CPA can. David brought up the problem of the old Haywood Moore office at 2202 Government, because vagrants can get inside. After some discussion, Greta offered to call Vicki Spurlock about it. Suzanne announced that eighty trees in the medians of Park Blvd., Cherokee and Kleinert are large enough for admittance into the Louisiana Live Oak Society. It was decided that certificates would be made and offered to people who adopt trees. Suzanne suggested that a ribbon cutting be planned for the next annual meeting.

Upcoming social events include Christmas Caroling on Friday, Dec. 8, at 6:30p.m. Margaret Bach has offered her house as a meeting place. Carolyn offered to make the flyer for the Caroling night and Holiday Lighting Contest. Money was approved for gifts for the lighting contest judges. Cindy was going to be asked if she would like to have the gathering at her house or if we should look for another house. The Board decided that we would all contribute dishes to the meal that night. Greta updated the Board on the Spring Tour of Homes. She has had one offer to be on tour and two maybes.

Randy discussed the boys’ group home in the 500 block of Camelia and the girls’ home next door, on Government. He suggested that it might be prudent and thoughtful to get to know the staff by name. Perhaps, we could give Christmas stockings to the boys and girls. It was suggested that it might be a good idea to talk with Collis Temple about it.

The Board allowed BistroByronz to advertise on the list-serve and Byronz would give the Association a percentage of the dinners from Garden District residents. The question was brought up as to whether we want to continue this and if so, to what kind of businesses, and how much money would we have to make? We decided to wait and see.

There was concern because the Dept. of Public Works never mows on Cherokees median. Suzanne said that she would call Steve Shurtz. The usual meeting place for our annual meeting, at City Park, will be unavailable, so we need to find a new building. Last year we had 70 people in attendance. The Carver Library on Terrace, the Red Shoes, and the Christian Science Church were all suggested. No food is allowed at the library or the church.

Mike Schexnayder and Carolyn have offered to be on the nominating committee for new Board members. David Franz said that he didn’t feel that there was much use for him as Security so he thought he might get off the Board.

The newsletter was discussed off and on through the meeting. One would be coming out shortly, so articles were requested as soon as possible. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Fontenot, Secretary
