                              DNA Results and Groupings

The G2a3b1 Clade within the DYS568= 9 Group
                                  Most Common in Northern England

All the men here with 67 markers have a value of 9 for marker DYS568 characteristic of this overall group.
All the groups genetically adjacent to the 568=9 group have a value of 11 for this marker.  The DYS568=9
group also has other characteristic marker values combinations that are needed for full verification of belonging
to this group.  This group also has values of 20,21 at YCA marker, a finding which is almost as reliable as the
DYS568 marker for identifying the DYS568 group.

Special DNA software (Fluxus) which gives special weighting to markers which seldom mutate indicates
the northern England clade is closest to a mostly Jewish Askhenazi clade and to an English-Italian clade.
The Jewish clade has characteristic marker values that identify it, but members of the English-Italian clade
and the northern England clade here can only be recognized by the close genetic distances of members.  The
mostly Jewish clade may or may not have resulted from a conversion of their ancestor to Judaism, but the
clade does not seem to have the Middle Eastern origins suspected in many other Jewish clades.

For information on what is known of the origins of thew DYS568=9 group and migrations and time
relationships to other G groupings link to the migration-time page .

There are not enough identified members of this clade to clearly define the geographical distribution of the
clade.  However, one family is definitely traced to Lancashire, northern England, and the Rushtons also
seem to come from a family in Lancashire.  Powers lists an Irish ancestry, but the Powers results are
oddities among the other tested Irish Powers families.  It is possible this clade will be renamed if better
knowledge of the geographical distribution surfaces.  Since one of the nearest clades to this northern
England clade shares a common ancestor about 2500 yrs. ago with a group currently living in the
Caucasus Mountains where Russia and Georgia meet, it is possible the clade here shares a similar
origin.

The G2a3b1 status means the men will be positive in special SNP testing for general G (M201)
and G2 (P287) and G2a (P15) and for G2a3 (U8 or S126 or L30) and for G2a3b (L141) and for
G2a3b1 (P303)
The status of the men here with regard to the three subgroups of G2a3b1 is negative for the
three subgroups of G2a3b1 based on testing within the DYS568= 9 group.

Slowly mutating markers are most useful in identifying subgroups within a clade.  The Bancks sample has
a 9 value at marker DYS450.  This is a very slowly mutating marker, and the value seen both in adjacent clades
and also in other members of the northern England clade is the ancestral 8 value.  Testing is currently
underway to see if all the Bankses have a 9.  If so, none of the other surnamed persons here share a common
male ancestor with them.  The 9 may be unique to the Bancks line, and -- if so -- it has no significance.

The Rushton samples results show their common ancestor shared with other clade members lived farther back
in time.  Their marker anomalies, which can be described as slow to medium in mutation speed, have a
gray background in the chart.

Recommended additional deep ancestry testing for men here with the interest and funds for this:

Upgrading to 67 markers for deep ancestry purposes is almost always useful in helping to better establish
relationships and time calculations to a common ancestor.  For deep ancestry purposes only one
person in a surname project needs to upgrade.  However, the additional markers may be useful within a
surname project in establishing family branches.

All tested persons in the DYS568=9 group have tested positive for the P303 SNP which characterizes G2a3b1.
The outcome of such testing for all the samples listed below is very predictable as P303+ and, in my
opinion, unnecessary.   SNP testing can be ordered as what is called the deep clade SNP test in the
haplotree section of the individual Family Tree DNA results page.  P303 (G2a3b1) is included in this deep
clade test.

There is no hint that the men here are positive for either of the currently three known P303 subgroups.  One
(G2a3b1b - L42) is found only in DYS388= 13 persons, and the other (G2a3b1a - U1) was found
negative in one of the men below.   Multiple DYS568=9 persons were found negative for L139 (G2a3b1c).
These three mutations occur only within certain other G2a3b1 groups, and everyone in the DYS568=9
group will almost certainly have the same negative results for these three tests.

So ordering any of these additional tests is, in my opinion, not a good use of money for men on this page.
The U1, L42 and L139 tests can be found on the Family Tree DNA results page in the Order Tests
section as advanced SNP tests for $29US each.
