Franz Marc

Artist:
Franz Marc (1880-1916)
Style: German Expressionist

Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany in 1880 and at the ago of 10 he began to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Like many of the early expressionists Marc was greatly inspired by the works of artists such as Vincent Van Gough.  March was one of the pioneers of the German Expressionist painters movement and in 1911 he, Macke and Kandinsky formed the "Der Blaue Reiter" (Blue Rider) artist guild. Franz Marc showed several of his works in the first "Der Blaue Reiter" exhibit.  Most of Marc's works depict such subject matter as natural setting and animals and are easily recognized by the use of bright abstract color. From Expressionism Marc began to make a change over to Cubism and Futurism and his art works became highly abstract in form.  In 1916 Franz Marc died while on patrol in WWI.
