Max Beckmann a famed German expressionist painter, sculptor and writer was born in Leipzig, Germany. Beckmann is well know for his self-portraits and highly intense paintings that reminiscent of Pablo Picasso's works. As with many of the expressionist artists during the WWII era, Beckman also came under heavy scrutiny by the Nazi party and he was banished from teaching art at that time and included in the 1937 Degenerate Art exhibition. After that point in time Beckmann lived a poor and destitute life in Amsterdam for approximately 10 years. None the less Beckmann continued to paint and at this time he created some of his greatest works. After the war had ended Beckmann moved to the United States where he taught art school at  the Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Soon after Beckmann died in December of 1950. Below is an example of the complexity and imaginative nature of Beckmann's unique artistic style.
