A note from John Merkwan:

The Roanoke Planning Commission held a public hearing on September 17, 2009 concerning two rezoning requests in the Greater Deyerle neighborhood.   (At our neighborhood meeting both proposals met with overwhelming disapproval by those in attendance.)

The first agenda item was on the conditional rezoning request of property at 2154 McVitty Road tax numbers 5100527, 528, 538, and 534.  We had a good showing of neighbors at the hearing but were not successful in persuading the Planning Commission that this proposal was not a good change for the neighborhood.  They voted 3 -1 in favor of the change.

The second agenda item was on Brandon Oaks' most recent Amendment of Proffered Conditions.  We were more successful here with the Planning Commission voting 0 -4 with all four votes against the change that Brandon Oaks had requested.

The next step is for these proposals to be presented to City Council which will be on October 21st at 7:00 pm.  The public (that’s us) will get another chance to make our feelings known.  In fact, on a previous attempt to get the McVitty/Gatewood property rezoned it had passed the Planning Commission but was defeated at City Council.  I’ll provide more info as that date approaches.
