State Leaders Attends GFWC Board of Director's Meeting - Washington,DC

Debbie Grieder, Penny Peterson, Pat Pisarski, Joy Mims attended the General Federation of Women's Clubs' Board of Directors Meeting on September 4-7, 2008, in Washington, D.C. Federation leaders gathered to discuss the ongoing work of the volunteer organization. Arizona member, Mary Ellen Laister, holds the office of 1st Vice Present on the GFWC International Board.

GFWC has a distinguished history of advocating on behalf of issues of national importance, and during the meeting in Washington, D.C., Federation leaders spent a day on Capitol Hill meeting with lawmakers to discuss GFWC's support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Letbetter has become the national face of pay equity since her discrimination case against Goodyear Tire reached the U.S. Supreme Court. A member of the GFWC Progressive Study Club in Jacksonville, Alabama, Ledbetter was on hand to share her story with fellow club members and particpate in the Day on the Hill meetings.

In addition to advocating on the Hill, members heard presentations by nationally-recognized authors and experts, including:

Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of Presdient George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, who shared the story of her work as an intern for UNICEF and the inspiration for her #1 New York Tims bestselling book, Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope.

Richard Kimball, president of Project Vote Smart, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that collects and distributes information on candidates for public ofice in the U.S., talked with GFWC members about key issues related to voting and legislative affairs.

Sarah Sladek, presdient and CEO of Limelight Generations, presented an interactive workshop geared to helping the Federatio increse recruitment, retention, and marketing to potential members.

GFWC International President Rose M. Ditto, Ph.D., presided over the gathering. Nearly 200 elected and appointed officers of the 118-year old Federation attended the meeting.
